I took a drafting class in highschool and have always wanted to play around with some design ideas. There are a lot of new houses in my area and thought I could design a better house. I've tried TurboCAD and Google SketchUp but they are not very easy to understand and totally UN-Mac-Like. Home Design Studio is designed by Mac users for Mac users. I was up and running in minutes with the Quick Start Wizard. The video on the Punch website is right... you can draw a rough floor plan with doors and windows in under a minute.
I'm starting with my own house and I'm about 2/3 done after maybe 3 hours playing with the software. Starting from scratch is easier since you're not trying to recreate a real house with accurate measurements. But this project has not been terribly difficult and I'm doing this floor plan exactly like my house down to the inch, outlet, and fixture. Simple click, drag, draw and the interface shows all relevant measurements. Release to drop and then use the inspector panel to edit settings. There's a 400+ page manual in the box if you need help.
I'm just starting and I love this software. I'll append this review after I finish this project and can talk more in depth about 3D, interior and exterior options, and how well it recreates real world living space.
