Red Ace: Squadron Review

Red Ace: Squadron

Since the dawn of computers with graphics cards, WWI combat games have been a favorite genre with few standouts. "Red Ace Squadron" (RAS), an early entry in the recent revival of this style, achieves what few others do: riveting and enjoyable gameplay without the complexity of either flight simulators or the lengthy and involved "plot" scenarios that are darlings of game magazines and no one else.
The designers of this game realized the task was play, and thus hybridized flying games with flight simulators to produce what might be called a flight combat toy, meaning that it represents reality instead of trying to duplicate it so that users can quickly get into the game and begin enjoying WWI-style aerial combat.
It recreates the fun and strategy of flying without representing the true complexity of an airplane, reaching a new height of playability. Fly with a joystick, or keyboard, or as most do keyboard and mouse, and control will be intuitive. Your missions appear on intro screens in abrupt phrases like "Defend base" and "Destroy tanks," but the translation of this to gameplay requires more tactical precision than one might think.
Maneuvering is the most immediate fun for the user, since once airborne one handles a plane that reacts like a barnstorming psychopath is driving. Pull rolls and take a steep dive - you'll be able to turn away from earth in time. Your plane isn't "fast" in the sense of breathtaking speed of screen display, but events happen quickly enough that the pacing will seem appropriate. In the same way that the designers were realistic about the market for a flying game, they are realistic about missions and make them basic exercises which get complex in their own ways.
The architects of adventure in each of the ten levels in two difficulty modes, through a desire to provide a distinctive type of narrative in each level, give each a basic story: rescue the scientist, protect the plane, bomb things, or mixed combat. Two different worldspaces give different experiences, with most Allied missions set in the fjords of Scandinavia and Axis missions correspondingly served in a desert setting. These missions are designed to allow the user to get immersed quickly into them and begin the process of aerial combat.
Adversaries are not as much smart as they are persistent and accurate, which makes them ideal sparring partners, and the addition of anti-aircraft batteries adds layers to the quick mental plans a pilot makes before a run. There are two characters that are arguably level bosses, in the difficult Axis mission five and the surprisingly easy "secret mission," which is mainly an endurance test. Bombing targets and aiming machine guns is intuitive and addicting.
What is most exciting about the game is how easy it is to maneuver like a professional pilot, but how useless that in itself is because your adversaries are equally empowered. Therefore one quickly learns to take on multiple adversaries and outmaneuver them, catapulting gameplay into the realm of dogfighting, which has been the eternal allure of the simpler days of biplanes and machine guns. Tactical supremacy and an ability to choose targets strategically becomes important here.
The game itself is not perfect; it requires a good video card and a fair amount of processing power, but it is delightful to be able to quickly leap into a game and take on opponents without wading through plot contrivances or setting dials. Some glitches annoy; players get turned back at the outer edges of each level, but enemies can and do take advantage of their ability to do so. Sometimes the game drops to a crawl, which makes the plane unstable; maneuvering is less than exact with mouse or keyboard and sometimes fine corrections cause instability as well. Otherwise, it's very tightly engineered, and it rarely crashes.
My suggestion for these developers, on their next version, is to make the three demo missions into the "easy" level and to focus on making the harder missions incorporate more than one strategy (evade detection, attack group, etc) per mission. It would be nice also to see some American planes so everyone sick of the Americans can shoot them down (this probably includes most Americans, as self-loathing is a national pasttime). Something that might also be fun would be an "instant play" option, where one could get dropped into a randomized setting with no mission other than patrol, dogfight, kill and avoid being killed. That sort of thing is best for us covert game players whose fun begins when the boss gets on the phone.
A tiny studio, Small Rockets, has taken the lead with this game and is now countered by several larger software groups attempting to intrude on this territory. It's all well and good that competition produce the best game possible, but for now, this game dominates in terms of playability and all-around fun. Where other games either feel unstable with mouse control or are complex in unnecessary ways that make tedium part of the play experience, this one is pure action and makes you almost feel like a point-n-click Red Ace.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 Review

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000

MSFS2K is one fantastic civilian flight simulator.
As a student Pilot at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, in Daytona Beach Florida, I am very familiar with how aircraft perform. Microsoft Flight Sim 2000 (i have Professional [mmmm Mooney/Kingair]) is very close to the real thing. The downloadable real-world weather data makes it possible to go fly "right now" in curerent conditions. The aircraft perform how they should, plus you can try things you wouldn't dream of in real life. "Gee Mike, are you doing aerobatics in the concorde again? They have an extra 300 for that you know!"
Graphic/terrain Detail is superb. I can find and recognize airports & major roads (IFR = I follow roads) from just about anywhere and there are more 3D buildings to look at than ever. The weather looks fantastic (check out a thunderstorm in a 777 or a Lear sometime) You need a real fast gaming system to maintain playability though.
With the amount of end-user support for flight sim 98, you can be sure thet there will be hundreds of new aircraft to download, along with other new goodies.
Multiplayer is tons of fun, as several students and i fly together regularly. We even have a dispach student play as an "observer" in the tower view to act as our ATC, just like in real life.

X-PLANE V8 (Mac) Review

X-PLANE V8 (Mac)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There has been a noticeable lack of flight simulators in the Mac software market for a long time. Amid the faltering competition, one developer has stood by the platform through thick and thin - Austin Meyer's Laminar Research and their acclaimed sim, X-Plane.
X-Plane is every bit a simulator but not much of a game. Aviation professionals should be excited by the fact that aerodynamic performance is accurately simulated using a complex physics engine. Believe it or not, most sims cheat by depending on pre-defined data that is used to estimate aircraft behavior in different configurations. It is such an accurate simulation that you can even fly on Mars or guide the Shuttle Orbiter from orbit to landing!
Superior accuracy is teamed with above-par graphics too. With satellite derived terrain, detailed aircraft models, realistic clouds, and high-resolutions, X-Plane holds it's own visually against most Windows flight sims. Though turning the settings all the way up can challenge even a G5, the graphics are scalable to support even old and low-end machines. This leaves load times the only real frustration.
With its technical emphasis, X-Plane can be very useful to aircrew as well as certified or aspiring private pilots. The program keeps a logbook of all flights, offers true to life system failures, air traffic control, airfields, charts, instrument panels, and aircraft checklists to practice with. Approaches and takeoffs can be practiced repeatedly with easy menu commands and there's a "get me lost" feature for challenging navigation skills. Two computers can even be networked in an instructor mode for training purposes.
While X-Plane isn't a combat sim and doesn't provide a real gaming experience, hobbyists and aviation enthusiasts can still enjoy experimenting with the wide variety of included aircraft - including airships, helicopters, gliders, and more. There's even an active community that uses the included content creation tools to churn out an ever-wider variety of downloadable aircraft (both real and fictional), flight plans, and scenery. Add to that a variety of challenging scenarios like water bombing, tanker rendezvous, and carrier landing, and X-Planes appeal grows.
Thanks to the author's secret weapon (http://x-plane.com/weapon.html) X-Plane is in a perpetual state of rapid development. That means regular bug fixes and feature additions. Not that it needs more! It can even playback real blackbox recordings, has both ambient ATC recordings and real-time ATC interaction thanks to OS Xs built-in speech software.
One of X-Planes coolest extras is the ability to capture the screen to a QuickTime movie. Though there is no indication that you are recording and no sound will be saved, there was little affect on the sims performance with default settings on an iMac G5.
Simple menus are always available and offer a lot of flexibility, but since development is simultaneously cross-platform, command-key shortcuts don't exist and the interface makes use of non-standard elements that may take some getting used to. Fortunately the menus and dialogs are fairly intuitive and require few trips to the minimalist printed manual or the more thorough version on disc.
X-Plane is a valuable tool for professional aviators and engineers yet it is affordable and accessible enough to appeal to anyone with an interest in aviation. Besides, it's the only civil aviation sim for sale on the Mac since Microsoft, Flight Unlimited, and Fly! faded away with Mac OS 9.
All aircrew should have a copy and visit XPlaneFreeWare.net (http://www.xplanefreeware.net/~barry/) to download relevant airframes and anyone involved in air operations should at least give the demo a try. X-Plane isn't priced like engineering software or marketed like a just-for-fun flight sim, but it succeeds as both!

ATC Simulator 2 Professional Review

This program recreates the look/feel of an actual radar scope used by professional controllers. This is the closest thing to the real thing, unmatched by any other program hands down. If you are seeking a career in air traffic control and want to experience what it is like, this is the best and cheapest way to do that. Because this software is so accurate, it is used by a number of universities across the country. The list includes, Auburn, Indiana, Purdue, Middle Tennessee State, University of North Dakota, Ohio University and students of Embry-Riddle University. This software has also been used for research at MIT. The other review here discrediting the software because of speech recognition is completely bogus and libelous. This program is not a speech recognition program. This program SUPPORTS speech recognition capability, but that technology is created and provided by Microsoft. It is another means of input for using the program, but by no means is it the ONLY way of input. It is cool when SR works, but this is NOT what this program is about. This program is a depiction of real air traffic control equipment. This program also contains historically accurate flight plans of over 100,000 flights that were captured from the FAA flight computer system.

X-Plane 9 Review

X-Plane 9
Average Reviews:

I am neither a pilot nor a "gamer" but I used to enjoy MS Flight Simulator, and when I went exclusively to a Mac several years ago my only regret was that I has to leave Flt.Sim. behind. X-Plane 9, which I just discovered, is even better than I remember Flt.Sim.
I bought an inexpensive joystick (Logitech Extreme 3-D Pro, about $35 at Amazon), and then installed X-Plane 9 on my iMac. The installation took about an hour but it went flawlessly. The joystick was recognized by the program, and I was easily able to calibrate it by following the very clear instructions.
I selected the Cessna 172 as my trainer plane and a local airport as my home field (again following the clear instructions). The first flight was not a thing of beauty but I was able to take off, circle the field, and make a safe, albeit shaky, landing.
This is not a toy and some of the "gamers" who complained about the lack of instructions or the problems in controlling their aircraft were probably using jets and/or multi-engine aircraft for their initial flights, and expecting instant gratification.
I have substantial learning to do (and it's a steep curve) but even at this early stage, I can say with confidence that this is a superb and flexible program which is well worth the investment of money and time for anyone who wants to enjoy a true flight simulator on their Mac.

I used to own a Microsoft Flight Simulator a few years ago. This is is a later version. I enjoyed the game then and I enjoy it even more now. This game is so realistic. I believe it is more fun than actually flying a plane. You can make mistakes and crash and get up and walk away. You can try things a real pilot cannot. The scenery is authentic. The airport at Kodiak, Alaska is exactly as I remember it. I flew out of there east to "Seal Island", a smallish Rock island inhabited by Sea Lions, off Cape Chiniak. I never expected to see it on a map.

I am a general aviation pilot, flying single engine fixed wing Cessna type aircraft (4 seater). Flight Simulator X gives the feeling of actually piloting a plane. The plane responds to the controls much like "the real thing".
Like other reviewers, I must agree that you must have a great computer. I have a dual processor Pentium D 940 running 3.2 Ghz, 4 gb RAM, 512 mb NVIDIA graphic card. On my system, with maxed out graphics and scenery, it runs very well, with only an occasional slight bump in frame-rates. I am somewhat disappointed with the scenery, which is good in major cities, but still basic in the country-side. The terrain is good everywhere, but the structures lack detail in other than the cities. The detail on airport runways and taxiways is terrific! Aircraft list is extensive. I recommend it.

Rise of Flight Iron Cross Edition Review

Rise of Flight Iron Cross Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not a full review, just my impression of this simulator. I don't have the ICE edition, but the previous one. ICE is actually a repackage of the previous version, with more planes available by default (when planes appear, you buy them - if you want to fly them, otherwise they are in the game, but only for AI). So if you don't have the previous version, this one is the better deal. This model (pay/buy what planes you want) helps with making the new patches free.
It has the best flight models, graphics, plane models and a very detailed mission editor. A lot of work was put into it. You do need a good computer (try an i7 or a Phenom x6, this one is pretty cheap for the performance you get) and you have to be prepared to spend time configuring it - because it is a simulator, not a game. Nevertheless, it has a lot of options to help the new user (including guided shooting). It does run on 64 bit all right, unlike what a previous poster implied (i have it running on a win7 x64 with phenom II x6 at 3500GHz). While not 'theoretically' required, you really need at least a good joystick (pitch, roll) with twist option to also control the rudder, or in addition - pedals (much better). Multiplayer offers 'cooperative mode' missions (everybody starts at the same time, dead is dead), dogfight mode (everyone enters when he/she can, you can respawn when dead) and also a 'conquer the flag' mode. The mission editor is very powerful, with lot of triggers and 'logic' stuff. The sim also offers a quick mission builder for single player, a (dynamic) campaign mode and a 'career mode' (scripted campaigns). So you can fill the skies with planes, or fly under bridges, or get medals and promotions flying campaigns or multiplayer.
It is very addictive, if you are a serious simmer and/or aviation fan. Some people only play this sim.

Combat Flight Simulator 3 Review

Combat Flight Simulator 3

I bought this for the sole purpose of playing Over Flanders Fields: Between Heaven and Hell, a World War I add-on for CFS3 available at www.overflandersfields.com
Despite some known glitches like incompatibility with virus software and jittering with dual core processors (fixed with an AMD dual processor patch) CFS3 was easy to install.
CFS3 is good looking and fun to fly, but due to the limitations of the flight modeling it won't completely satisfy hard core sim pilots looking for the ultimate in WWII realism. For those wanting to add-on WWII planes, scenery, airfields, etc, there are numerous mods for CFS3 available at fan sites like www.combatfs.com (you might try Mediterranean Air War or European Theatre of Operations).
The Over Flanders Field: Between Heaven and Hell add-on is a fantastic addition to the game, and one of the few ways to engage in WWI era flight. The last great WWI flight sim was RedBaron3D, which never reached it's potential while Sierra/Dynamix was behind it. But over the years, a number of mods (Full Canvas Jacket, Western Front, Hell's Angels) made RB3D playable and more historically accurate. The authors of those mods have now taken CFS3 to unbelievable heights through OFF:BHAH, with high resolution scenery, 39 flyable aircraft, 3200+ historically accurate aircraft skins, the best campaign manager I've ever seen, etc., etc. The experience of flying a campaign in the OFF:BHAH world is simply incredible. As realistic as it gets.
I have played dozens of flight sims and FPS games over the years, and have to say OFF:BHAH IS THE BEST MONEY I HAVE EVER SPENT ON A GAME!!!

The sim is ok and for a space flight sim.You will not find one much better that will run on windows 7.The game play is slow and takes alot of time to complet a mission but it is a sim and not a game. You can not find anything better,I have tried and looked everywhere I can think of online.I like the sim alot but it would be cooler with updated graphics they seem kind of old and dated. But this is about the best you will find in this type of sim at this time and it has alot to offer if you take the time to set it up right. It dose run very good on the pc I have it on and I have not had one issue running it at all.I think this sim would run on most pc's running windows 7 with a good video card.I run it on one of my gaming pc's with a amd phenom II X6 1100t black edition cpu @ 3.3 and 16 gigs of DDR3 1600 hyperx ram.I have used a evga gts 450 1gb video and a evga gtx460 2gb card to run this sim with very good performance.I have went to a ga-990xa-ud3 motherboard and the evga gtx560ti 2 gb video card and it runs perfect on this setup also.I have also run this on the amd phenom II X4 955 AND 975 black edition cpu's with very good performance. You can run it with a pc that has less performance than the parts I have put into my gaming pc's I think. It only takes around 26% of my pc's performance to run this sim.I still have xp on one of my gaming pc's to run some of the older combat flight sims that do not run well on windows 7 but I have never run this sim on my pc with xp.I have a HP p6232p factory pc that I only updated the ram with ddr2 1066 hyperx 8 gigs, put in a 550wt XFX power supply and added a evga gts450 1gb video card and I am sure it would run fine on it.I run flight sim x on this pc and it run's fine but not with all the settings maxed out like I can do with one of the gaming pc's I put together just to run my games.I have 2 evga gtx460 2gb video cards but I have not run this sim on a pc with the video cards running sli so I do not know how well it would run on a system running sli. Some games run better on a system with 2 cards running sli and some have issues that do not have support for sli yet.I find most new games do run well useing 2 cards running sli.So good luck if you try this one with a pc running 2 video cards useing sli.The box it comes in dose not say you need to have a over the top performance pc to run this sim at all.I have just found out the hard way over time that you can never have to much ram,to much cpu performance or to much cooling performance in your system ever. You many not need all this performance all the time but it is very good to have when you do need it.Overall I have found this to be an ok sim as it is now but could have been very cool with a little more work.I have not been to the website for this game and do not know if it has one but some games do update all the time and this could be one of them.I like the sim and if you like flight sims you will like this one as well.It is not perfect like rise of flight iorn cross but it is cool.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X Standard DVD Review

Let me get something of my chest first. I have noticed a lot of bad feedback on reviewers who give higher ratings to products that are developed by Microsoft. So just to make it clear - I am not reviewing Microsoft, I'm reviewing the simulator.
So.. how fun is this game? Well it's your system that can actually answer this question. This game is amazing from my point of view. I have used everything, from FS98 to latest X-Plane.. and nothing is as good as this.
The Good:
- Stunning graphics. This is the most beautiful game I have ever played. From the water effects to shadows from the plane.. every effect and particle is breathtaking.
- Gameplay. It is an amazing gameplay, indeed. You can now fly in any seat you like, control literally any view of the airplane, most of the cockpit controls work and function the way they are supposed to. The weather system is amazing.
- Multiplayer. This one speaks for itself: FUN FUN FUN. It is very entertaining since you get to see people from all over the world. However, there are few cons.. like the Bad ATC guys who often mislead you and cause you to crash etc. It was foggy, so I depended on A/P. I was told to turn 074R, which I did. I heard the ILS Frequency so I put it on APP but ultimately, I was put into wrong direction and as much as APP fought to align me to the right direction (while keeping up with sped and altitude) i still landed in the ocean.. and of course crashed (since you're not able to actually land on water in this game). Of course, there are plenty of pefect ATC's out there but even with few that are not as good it's still VERY fun to play. Try it and see for yourself.
The Bad:
- ATC. ATC has not changed much from FS2004 other than a new "window" that it displays in. Still no ability to declare an emergency which is sort of a disappoint since you ARE able to set engines to fail or to run out of fuel (or both). So.. if your engines die out on you don't you think you deserve a right to report the situation to ATC? LOL
- Crash dynamics. If you're hoping to be able to crash your plane into a mountain and see a giant explosion and earthquakes then I have to disappoint you. While I almost never crash in Flight Sims I still wish there were better crashing dynamics to make it more realistic. For example, if I land heavily on my nose I'd love to see my plane's nose gear to fail and act like it would in physics.
Also, why can't we have the ability to land on water? Boeing 737 CAN do that (if propely executed). Here, no matter what amazing pilot you are.. as soon as you touch the water - you crash. Oh well. It's a very small thing but I wish it was improved a bit.
The Ugly:
- System requirements. I agree with what many reviewers said - this game depends more on CPU than it does on video card. This game will most likely NOT work at the Max settings if you have a brand-name PC (eMachines, HP, Dell).
When I first installed the game I had AMD Sempron 3300 (2.01GHz); 2GB DDR, Radeon X1650 Pro with 512MB. I ran the CanYouRunIT tool from System Requirements Lab.. the report said that I exceed RECOMMENDED requirements and should have a great experience with the game. I didn't really believe that since I have a 3rd class CPU but I played FS2004 and HL2 on the HIGHEST settings with absolutely NO lags so I thought it would work fine.
I was.. wrong. The game was not playable unless I set all of the aircraft, transport and texture settings to Minnimum Low. It lagged horribly on my native resolution of 1680x1050 32 which I had to put into 1440x900 16bit.
I purchased a new video card which is Geforce GTX 8800 with 740mb of RAM and can now play without any lags on my native resolution with settings set to Medium High but still not maxed out. Why? Because this game needs CPU. In this case, the CPU is the heart not the video card. If you buy it make sure to get the SP1 for this ASAP.. there are few performance updates which could be crucial if your video card or CPU isn't the best.
So to wrap up - I highly recommend this simulator to any Aerolover as myself. But make sure you have a GOOD CPU and card. If you have them you'll find yourself spending hours and hours flying above gorgeous landscapes, commmunicating with people all over the world, surviving a dead engine and/or faulty mechanics and generally having fun. This amazing software is both entertaining and educational.

X-Plane v 9.0 Review

X-Plane v 9.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have purchased every Microsoft Flight Simulator since FS '98, and have found each one to have it's own unique quality. So when Flight Simulator X came out, I was eager to see it's contribution to my ever increasing world of flight simulation. While I enjoyed it, it was not as promised. The DX10 feature was the biggest let down, as even on max settings it looked nothing like what we were promised. Oh, it looked okay as flight sims go, but it lacked the real punch I expected from a Microsoft Flight Simulator.
The flight physics are still adequate, set to maximum realism it can be fun, even. However, I still felt something was lacking. So, in a fit of boredom, I purchased X Plane 9. $[...]? "Well", I thought, "we'll see what we can get out of a flight sim that costs a third less than FSX standard."
I installed the program on my PC. It took about 30 minutes to install the primary program, and about 10 minutes to install the North America/Europe scenery disc. That's right, scenery on separate DVDs, and it's all worth it.
I started up the program and configured my graphics settings. Just for a hoot, I set them all to maximum settings. 4X Anti-aliasing, Ansitropic filtering, 1680x1050x32 resolution, turned on the rain and weather effects, and started it up. It loaded in about 20 seconds, which was 3x faster than FSX, and the opening shot was enough to catch my breath. It was superb. I'm not talking just nice resolution, the realism was astounding. Everything looked and moved like I was actually flying through a real world environment. So I flew around for a while, and the handling feels better. It responds more like an aircraft would whether it be rainy, sunny, windy, what have you, the plane behaved accordingly. FSX had done this also, but it was only mediocre compared to the flight physics this program was employing.
I wasn't won over yet. I wanted to see if I set FSX to the exact same specs, how it would respond.
Firstly, FSX doesn't have the same detailed customization as X-Plane 9. You have about half those settings. However, what I came to see was whether FSX could produce a visually stunning image as X-Plane 9. I set everything up, maxed out, as best as I could. There weren't as many visual options either for FSX as there were for X-Plane.
After I mimicked the settings for FSX as I had for X-Plane, I started up the simulation.
I was disappointed. FSX didn't do too bad, but when I tried to take off, I was rewarded with frame skips and stuttering. FSX couldn't reproduce the visuals and physics without cutting it's own performance. This was supposed to be the power of DirectX 10? Pfft. At max settings in X-Plane, I had seamless flying, with rain and thunder, lightning, drops splattering the windshield and shearing up the side, off the wings, too. Unlike FSX where you just see gray colored lines and a reflective runway as if it were wet.
I will state one thing, however: If you like using your keyboard, you can in X-Plane, it's just a little tougher to use. X-Plane does mouseflight (which is neat once you get the hang of it) and Joystick control, which I highly recommend. You will find a more satisfying experience that way.
I am now an X-Plane fan, and unless Microsoft can give me their performance, physics and detail, I'm not sure if I'll even be interested in their next release. Who knows. In the meantime, I'll be flying X air. ;)
~Pastor J

Flight simulation for your PC just doesn't get any better than this. Microsoft has been at this for a long time, and they make it better with every release.
A few things seasoned flight simmers will know that new users will certainly WANT to know are:
The system requirements to really make this software work well are dauntingly advanced. You'll need something approaching a top-level gaming machine, with a huge video card, to get the full benefit of the entire visual, audible, advanced controls experience. Got a laptop you think is pretty smokin'? Forget it.
Microsoft follows every release of this product with massive service packs you must download and install, and each one takes a huge chunk out of your hard drive. Be prepared with LOTS of disk space. This particular release (meaning, the "Gold Edition") includes service packs one and two, so you won't need to download them.
An internet connection is required to register the product.
A note to real pilots (I am also a pilot): Keep in mind that this is a $30 product for a home computer, not a Flight Safety training machine. The flight model is basic and stable, and is not intended to simulate extreme attitudes and emergency procedures. If you're looking for a realistic spin trainer, or a procedural instrument trainer there are expensive add-ons that will get you CLOSE, but you should generally be looking elsewhere.
Bottom line is that this is, hands down, the best of the lot, but you really DO need vast hardware resources to run it. If you own those resources, be prepared for a real-time, audio-visual feast.
