Norton SystemWorks 2002 Professional Edition Review

(More customer reviews)A note to any readers who are contemplating purchasing
Systemworks. I have always been a user of Norton's Windows
programs, be they Norton Utilities, Systemworks or
whatever. The last version, however, I would recommend
against buying, at least if you are using the NTFS file
system. The Speed Disk feature is much slower then
Microsoft's built in defrag aplet, which is an offshoot of
Executive Software's Diskeeper program. While you can use
Norton Disk Doctor to diagnose a drive, you must use XP's
built in CHKDSK function to actually repair it. The new
program does not have the benchmark features from the
former releases in the System Information. As previously
stated, I don't see a good use for Cleansweep, as XP has a
faster and better uninstall program. There is no longer a
registry editor or optimizer in the Norton Utilities part,
XP now incorporates Faxing, so the limited version of
WINFAX PRO is no longer needed. A limited version of Roxio
Go Back is included, but whether this is superior to using
XP's System Restore and Backup (for data) features is
highly debatable. The Rescue Disk has been discontinued.
The only programs that seem to be worth having are Norton
Ghost and, of course, Norton Anti Virus. Since I purchased
Norton's Internet Security program, which includes a far
better firewall than XPs, a parental control program that
actually works with Windows logons, and the same anti
virus program, I really have no need for Systemworks.
Possibly, the diagnostic features (Win Doctor) are
worthwhile, but while this always identified a lot of
problems and cleaned them up, it never actually bailed me
out of a Windows problem that I was epxperiencing (I'm not
even sure if this is available for XP, or what it does. XP
right now is running fine - if it ain't broke, don't fix
it). I saw a note on Microsoft Newgroups that Win doctor acutally trashed one uer's machine to the point of unrecoverability.

Norton Partition Magic 8.0 Review

(More customer reviews)If you have a Sony Vaio this review is for you. In the past Sony has created small C:\ drives and large D:\ drives. So C:\ quickly fills with additional programs and then you need PM to fix it (move some from D:\ to C:\). But I kept getting errors with PM running in Windows. Sony was no help, and Symantec (who makes PM) had one suggestion - run it in DOS. That solved the problem and then PM works well.
Want details? start PM in windows and select "create rescue discs". These boot the computer in dos. Next (this will all make sense when you actually do it) select D:\ and tell it to shrink that partition by, say, 10GB AND specify that the 10GB be located IN FRONT of the new, smaller D:\. This places the "set aside" space before D:\, but right after C:\. Then select C:\ and tell it to make C:\ larger by 10Gb. If you don't do these steps in this order the program doesn't detect any extra space to give to C:\.It took me hours of "playing with it" to figure this out, so I hope this saves someone some grief.

Symantec AntiVirus 2004 Professional Edition Review

(More customer reviews)I've been using Norton Antivirus for several years. It's been pretty solid, maybe a bit slow. I thought an upgrade to the latest version would be routine. How wrong I was! The product activation has a bug on Windows XP Professional that makes it "forget" that it's been activated. And after you activate a few times, it locks out your product key leaving your computer completely unprotected. The Symantec knowledge base acknowledges the problem but cheerfully tells you they don't know how to fix it. Testing? What testing? I think it's time to get my money back and buy a product that actually works.

Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 3-User Review

(More customer reviews)I had Trend Micro PC-Cillin 2005 and thought it was great, once I managed to get a working serial number to register it, but then my employer made me install Symantec anti-virus, which I was never happy with. Finally, several months ago and one new employer later, I upgraded my old TM 2005 to TM 2008 and while I definitely feel more protected, the security comes at a price.
I have the TM 2008 loaded onto a high-end Sony Vaio that is about a year and a half old. The TM protection is great -- immediately after loading it the program caught 13 threats that the Symantec program had missed (not to mention that several internet diagnostic programs had missed them as well). TM is easy to configure -- you'll probably have to tell it not to notify you everytime it stops a potential threat, or you'll be receiving non-stop notifications. It catches viruses, spyware, adware -- pretty much everything you don't want on your computer -- without interfering or conflicting with any other programs you may be running. The protection is the best.
Now for the negatives. This baby is slow. Really slow. The lag time to connect to the internet is like connecting via dial-up. E-mail takes forever to load. Every program on my computer that requires interaction with the internet takes at least 10 times as long, although happily it doesn't interfere with other programs such as Word or non-interactive games. But it is definitely frustrating having to wait after getting used to the quick response times I normally get with a high-speed DSL connection. One other and potentially more serious problem is that when I try to update my protection the program tells me I am not connected to the internet. I sent customer service an inquiry and got a very fast response. The recommended fix worked, but you have to be fairly comfortable with Windows to do it, so if you aren't comfortable with computers, this could be a problem, one that never happened with TM 2005, nor was the 2005 version this slow. Unlike some people, however, I've never had a problem with Trend Micro's customer service as long as I use e-mail or internet chat. Phone contact is a little more difficult, but no worse than a lot of tech companies.
In short, I'm not going to replace this software anytime soon since I feel more protected with it than with anything else, but I do wish Trend Micro would work out the bugs and figure out how to make this version faster. Maybe internet threats have just gotten that much worse in 3 years, but it still seems like protecting yourself shouldn't mean having to revert to dial-up type lags.

Symantec Endpoint Protection (10 user) Review

(More customer reviews)I have been a longtime user of Norton Corp Edition products and for the most part have been stratified. It only seemed natural when our current subscription to Corp Edition 10 expired that we move to version 11 also called SEP (Symnatec Endpoint Protection) on our Windows 2003 SBS running SQL, Exchange and Act. After reading the manuals the installation seemed pretty straightforward. This is a very different product from version 10 so defiantly plan to spent some time reading the SEP manuals first. After installing the manager on our SBS via the upgrade I ran the deployment manager to install the clients, which seem to go well on only three of the eight XP-pro clients. I had to manually install the software on the other clients due to problems with Outlook getting mail from our Exchange server. The ant-virus client deployment also failed on the server even when I tried to manually install SEP it seemed the version 10 client would not uninstall. So I followed the lengthy task from the support web site to manually remove version 10 from the server and then manually re-installed SEP. After the install Live-Update kept failing. I talked to Symantec tech support several times and per there request removed all Norton/Symantec products and reinstalling SEP a couple of more times after running a couple clean-wipe utilities they provided but Live-Update would still not work. Symantec eventually suggested I go back to version 10 until some of the compatibility issues are resolved with SEP. After investing over 12 hours on this upgrade and then reinstalling the old version we are now considering moving to another venders product.

VirusBarrier X6 2-User Review

(More customer reviews)My previous experience with this sort of software on the Mac involved NetBarrier on my Mac Pro which is still in use. The addition of a Macbook Pro for on the go use had my concern for adding protection such as VirusBarrier. Listening to the Tech Guy otherwise known as Leo Leporte, does not to my knowledge suggest that anyone with a Mac needs to be concerned with any of the problems associated with the Windoze (Windows) OS and as a result does not need to add any software for virus or antivirus. That may or not be the case. My position is that by using this software, I am not passing on anything onto my PC using friends. Since installing the software four weeks ago my guess is that I have had at least five upgrades. These are probably Windows add ons since as far as I know there just are not any Mac problems beyond one or two as opposed to thousands of problems on Windows.
My years as an art instructor involved using Amiga, Macintosh and Windows computers. No matter what OS a person uses, it seems to me that it is our responsibility to add the necessary protection. VirusBarrier is a good choice for the Mac in my mind.

Internet Security Barrier X6 Review

(More customer reviews)The three components I attempted to use were the Spam Barrier, Personal Backup, and of course Virus Barrier.
Spam Barrier overrides OS X Mail's perfectly good "Junk" mail filtering with its own overly aggressive system that is set to block almost everything (including Amazon and NewEgg e-mail order acknowledgements), while interfering with your mail providers' "Spam" mail folders.
Personal Backup, when set to full "clone" mode, sometimes backups the Mac's hard drive and sometimes doesn't. When it does, it may or may not back up the whole drive. This may depend on the phase of the Moon; I haven't tested that yet.
The Virus Barrier is the worst offender. Its obtuse, non-intuitive, overly layered setup is outweighed only by its ridiculously aggressive scanning and network traffic monitoring. Don't expect innocuous items like thumb drives, disk image (DMG) files, or iTunes Store access to work without a lot of manual intervention - in fact, you have to create so many exceptions to the "rules," that it obviates the need for this virus checker in the first place.
As a final PC-like indignity, attempting to uninstall this Intego product is a chore, given its Windows-like littering all across your HD with Intego preferences, documents, and the like.
This is going back, and I'll try the free ClamXAV a try. It can't be any worse!

Norton Antivirus for Mac 11.1 Review

Reportedly in development for 5 years, this software does protect from viruses, including protecting your Mac from being a carrier of Windows viruses. However, there has never been an "in the wild" Mac virus.
My cable company is offering Norton as part of their service. Virus scanning is too intrusive. At least, this doesn't have the crappy firewall as in the Norton suite, but that's not saying much.
The only real reason for an AV on the Mac is to protect Windows users from files other Windows users may have sent you. That said, there is a much better, less intrusive product called Intego VirusBarrier that catches Windows viruses, in combination with the NetBarrier firewall which is extremely customizable. I'm now using the free Sophos AV software, and recommend it highly.
The problem: After testing Norton and deciding I didn't care for it, I uninstalled it. However, as I dug deeper into my system, I found the software did not completely uninstall. As with their Windows applications, Norton for Mac puts hidden files all over the place. After the uninstall, I found invisible Symantec files and deleted them.
On the next start-up, the Mac wouldn't start: gray screen of death. It would start up in Safe mode, and once after restarting from Safe mode, but not again. So, I reinstalled Norton, and it works again. This is shameful.
I do not recommend this software. Go with Intego or Sophos instead. Or, if Windows viruses are not an issue with you, then you're probably safe not running any AV. The Mac's built in firewall is excellent, too. If you really need to feel protected, go with the free version of iAntivirus which protects only against potential Mac threats (which really don't exist for most Internet users).
REMOVAL instructions. Symantec keeps this a secret. Amazon does not allow links, so search Google for the "RemoveSymantecMacFiles removal utility". It's on Symantec's Enterprise site.
I was finally able to remove every trace of the Symantec "bloatware." The uninstaller does not do this. Make sure you back up your entire system (I recommend SuperDuper) to a Firewire drive prior to doing this. I also recommend booting into Safe Mode to run the removal operation.

Norton AntiVirus 11.0 For Mac Review

(More customer reviews)This software works but it really really really slow. Really really really slow. Slows my new imac to a crawl and the slowest of antivirus scans I've ever seen. Just changed over from the PC world and as a creature of habit keep antivirus installed. All the antivirus authors seem to have free trials except Symantec. Probably because you'd be really frustrated and not buy the program... This was the biggest waste of money I've spent on software in a long time. Two stars since it probably does it's job....if it ever finishes the scan. So far six hours on a month old computer.
Update: Well, no longer is it a waste of money. Talked with their very friendly New Delhi tech support and got a refund. Bought Intego and though it's expensive, it does the job efficiently.

Pcanywhere Host and Remote 12.5 1 User CD Ret Mm Review

(More customer reviews)I upgraded from pcAnywhere 10.5 to 12.5 because 10.5 was poorly written and caused numerous programs to blow up on my system(awvid5.dll) I HOPED that 12.5 would have been a new improved version because I need remote access to my systems. Unfortunately after installing 12.5 a whole new set of issues surfaced. Instead of pulling my hair out, I uninstalled 12.5 and set up a VPN on my home system and am now using UltraVNC. It does the same thing and is FREE. (Did I mention free?) Save your money.

Norton 360 Version 2.0 Premier Edition Review

(More customer reviews)Over the years I have used many Anti-Virus / Anti-Spyware / Defrag programs. I have gone from McAfee to AVG to many others. When Norton first came out, it was by all purposes a "memory hog". On top of that it would spam your computer with countless messages of "invasions" or "attacks". Many of which would be irrelevant.
Now fast forward to 2008. Norton has now put all it's products into one nice handy package. While to some it might be Norton Products Lite, I feel that the program as a whole is sufficient enough for the needs of the average computer user. It comes with a spam filter, anti-virus, defrag, temporary file clean-up and backup program. To the average "non-computer literate" consumer, the fact that this is all together and is easy to manage is a blessing. It is also very quiet. What I mean by this is, you do not get all the annoying messages I spoke of earlier. Norton simply keeps out all of the invasions, and runs all it's processes in the background. The only indication that anything is going on is simply a little clear "bubble" in the taskbar letting you know what tasks are going on. They also include a log that tells you what all Norton has done.
As a computer technician I would suggest this to the average computer user. It's simple and easy to use and comes bundled together. That being said, if you are an advanced computer user, you might feel that this program is lacking. By being bundled many of the programs do not come with the many advanced customizations that you might see in other programs. One example is in the Disk Defrag program. You do not get the option of putting, say for example, *.exe files at the first of the hard drive so it takes less processing of the HD to find your program files. Also despite the reliability of Norton as a whole, I find the Spyware removal program to be lacking a little bit. While I do love the Phishing Protection (harmful websites), I feel that Norton does miss a number of typical Spyware programs. But to counter that, there are many free spyware programs out there on the net that can pick up that slack. And as most avid computer users know, one product alone will not prevent ALL spyware due to the ever changing methods out there. Either way to a computer guru this product is stripped down. But to the average user, it's just right.
Regarding the many people having installation problems, all I can say is I have installed this on 3 computers, each with a different setup. One has Windows XP Service Pack 1 (Old Pentium III 750 Mhz Processor). Another computer has Windows XP Service Pack 3 (AMD Athlon XP). The last has Windows Vista Home Premium (Intel Pentium Centrino Duo) Service Pack 1. I have had no installation problems, update problems, or application conflicts. I even run Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware as well. Both applications are notorious for supposedly having conflicts with Norton 360.
With Norton 360 Version 2.0 Premium you are getting a good deal with this program (Defrag, Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, and Disk Cleaner all in one). If you don't need the extra storage that Premium allows then you might just go with Norton 360 Version 2.0 (Regular) as it provides a cheaper alternative. Either way you can not go wrong with this product. And if you seek technical support, I'd suggest the online method as I do agree that many of the technicians I have spoke to on the phone are either hard to understand or seem to lack the technical proficiency I ask for in my help. If you need a one-stop solution for your Security needs this is the way to go.

- Low Resource Usage compared to previous Norton products
Cons:
- Lack of Customization
- Anti-Spyware does not always clear out everything
- Renewal Process is a bit iffy (Online process messed up a few times)

Norton 360 version 5.0 Premier (3 User) Review

(More customer reviews)I just installed norton on my laptop and it works perfectly. Just as described it doesn't affect the computer performance and has a super easy user friendly menu. I had different internet security products over the years and I have to say that this one the best one by far. Everything is really easy from computer tune up to manage your backup files and such, it even scans your facebook wall for treats!
I would definitely recomend that product to anyone. Don't let price scare you it will pay off

Talkworks Pro 3.0 Review

(More customer reviews)I am considering returning the product, if I can find another product that works better. The tool had locked up several times, forcing me to hit the power switch to reboot. The menu system doesn't give you the ability to tell the user that they selected an invalid option and to try again. The custom greatings are easy to do, but you can't reuse them. A greeting you record for one mailbox is not selectable for another mailbox. Also, I would rate the on-line help as so-so, and Symantec's web knowledgebase as worst than most.
