(More customer reviews)My previous experience with this sort of software on the Mac involved NetBarrier on my Mac Pro which is still in use. The addition of a Macbook Pro for on the go use had my concern for adding protection such as VirusBarrier. Listening to the Tech Guy otherwise known as Leo Leporte, does not to my knowledge suggest that anyone with a Mac needs to be concerned with any of the problems associated with the Windoze (Windows) OS and as a result does not need to add any software for virus or antivirus. That may or not be the case. My position is that by using this software, I am not passing on anything onto my PC using friends. Since installing the software four weeks ago my guess is that I have had at least five upgrades. These are probably Windows add ons since as far as I know there just are not any Mac problems beyond one or two as opposed to thousands of problems on Windows.
My years as an art instructor involved using Amiga, Macintosh and Windows computers. No matter what OS a person uses, it seems to me that it is our responsibility to add the necessary protection. VirusBarrier is a good choice for the Mac in my mind.

Norton Internet Security 2012 - 1 User 3PC Review

(More customer reviews)Norton woke-up in 2009/10 making the interface user-friendly and its signature updates running in the background making the software less resource-hogging. It's continuing the same trend this year (NIS2012) with a little less cluttered interface - meaning most features automated for the novice user, but you have to dig in deep to make advanced changes. It works well with Windows7 as well as Win XP if you care (I don't have Vista - so cannot comment about that).
1. Installation: As in the recent versions of NIS, installation was a snap. It took under 2 minutes, but needed a restart. If you have existing license for NIS, download the update from support -> check for new version menu item from within NIS. You can update the license number from the disk later when your license is about to expire. In previous version(s), NIS overwrote existing license period if you upgraded from disk. I havent checked it on this version (I still have about 90 days left, too risky!!).
2. Interface: The main interface is less cluttered, but a new addition is a big status window (floating gadget) on the upper right corner of your screen with large buttons for different menus. Most buttons on these menus are for other Norton products unrelated to NIS (annoying). For example button for on-line back-up (costs extra!) or mobile protection for android (free), parental control (free) etc. I havent found an easy way to get rid of this yet! (Alright! It's easy. There is a close button next to it and if you close it, it does not reappear after a restart).
3. Setting up: Most of the settings are done by default and should be fine for the average user. For example how often to scan your computer, what time of the day, which files to allow to connect to the internet etc. If you need advanced settings, most of those are just a couple of clicks away and mostly easy to find. There are some menu items that could have been done better. If you had existing trusted network information from previous NIS, those are retained which is good.
4. Security: As in previous versions, NIS was good at detecting most of the commonly bothering cookies and adware. Everytime you download a file, it is checked for viruses and if it is from a trusted website and there is a pop-up saying it is clean. Similarly, like previous versions, Norton safe search marks results from google searches as safe or not. you can check website security by looking for norton trusted symbol e.g. bank sites or amazon.com - that way you wont enter your password in a phising site.
5. What's new? Like mentioned above the annoying floating gadget is new. The primary interface is less cluttered but at the same time advanced settings are easily accessible from different menus. The new version does appear to be a little faster than 2011. might be significant on older systems.
Overall, very good protection with minimal resource usage.

Internet Security Barrier Antispam Review

(More customer reviews)The problem with assessing most Internet Security packages is that one doesn't know just how weak a product is in reality until it has been breached! This package come with a lot of fancy displays to try to convince you that it is doing a lot of things to protect your Macintosh computer against hostile internet-borne threats but, when the chips are down, fancy displays are no substitute whatsoever for useful and secure functionality. Sadly, that fact seems to have been largely ignored in the design and specification of this collection of internet security tools.
This particular boxed offering from Intego bundles three main security applications: firewall, anti-virus and anti-spam, together with a few extras, such as Washing Machine for clearing out your browsers of info: browsing history, cookies etc.
The main tools each offer a reasonable degree of configurability but largely fall short of complete usefulness. The Firewall, for instance, looks flashy but doesn't offer much by way of functionality that knowledgeable systems users could not configure for themselves from within the OS. The anti-virus tool only offers protection against Mac-specific viruses and trojans of which there are still not so many in general circulation. Norton AntiVirus 11.0 For Mac scores much higher here, as that is effective against PC/Windoze threats, making it much more useful tool by preventing Mac users acting as unwitting carriers or transmitters of threats to their less enlightened friends or work colleagues. The Anti-spam utility is the most disappointing part of the package, however, as it only works with Apple Mail and MS Entourage, both of which have perfectly adequate anti-spam protection built in. This utility would have been so much more useful if it had also operated with POP mailers such as Thunderbird, or even the old Eudora which many Mac users continue to use in the free mode which has junk mail filtering disabled.
Overall, I can't help feeling that most users would be better off saving the price of this bundle and putting it towards more useful (i.e. complete!) anti-virus package or internet security suite.

(More customer reviews)The three components I attempted to use were the Spam Barrier, Personal Backup, and of course Virus Barrier.
Spam Barrier overrides OS X Mail's perfectly good "Junk" mail filtering with its own overly aggressive system that is set to block almost everything (including Amazon and NewEgg e-mail order acknowledgements), while interfering with your mail providers' "Spam" mail folders.
Personal Backup, when set to full "clone" mode, sometimes backups the Mac's hard drive and sometimes doesn't. When it does, it may or may not back up the whole drive. This may depend on the phase of the Moon; I haven't tested that yet.
The Virus Barrier is the worst offender. Its obtuse, non-intuitive, overly layered setup is outweighed only by its ridiculously aggressive scanning and network traffic monitoring. Don't expect innocuous items like thumb drives, disk image (DMG) files, or iTunes Store access to work without a lot of manual intervention - in fact, you have to create so many exceptions to the "rules," that it obviates the need for this virus checker in the first place.
As a final PC-like indignity, attempting to uninstall this Intego product is a chore, given its Windows-like littering all across your HD with Intego preferences, documents, and the like.
This is going back, and I'll try the free ClamXAV a try. It can't be any worse!

Norton Antivirus for Mac 11.1 Review

Reportedly in development for 5 years, this software does protect from viruses, including protecting your Mac from being a carrier of Windows viruses. However, there has never been an "in the wild" Mac virus.
My cable company is offering Norton as part of their service. Virus scanning is too intrusive. At least, this doesn't have the crappy firewall as in the Norton suite, but that's not saying much.
The only real reason for an AV on the Mac is to protect Windows users from files other Windows users may have sent you. That said, there is a much better, less intrusive product called Intego VirusBarrier that catches Windows viruses, in combination with the NetBarrier firewall which is extremely customizable. I'm now using the free Sophos AV software, and recommend it highly.
The problem: After testing Norton and deciding I didn't care for it, I uninstalled it. However, as I dug deeper into my system, I found the software did not completely uninstall. As with their Windows applications, Norton for Mac puts hidden files all over the place. After the uninstall, I found invisible Symantec files and deleted them.
On the next start-up, the Mac wouldn't start: gray screen of death. It would start up in Safe mode, and once after restarting from Safe mode, but not again. So, I reinstalled Norton, and it works again. This is shameful.
I do not recommend this software. Go with Intego or Sophos instead. Or, if Windows viruses are not an issue with you, then you're probably safe not running any AV. The Mac's built in firewall is excellent, too. If you really need to feel protected, go with the free version of iAntivirus which protects only against potential Mac threats (which really don't exist for most Internet users).
REMOVAL instructions. Symantec keeps this a secret. Amazon does not allow links, so search Google for the "RemoveSymantecMacFiles removal utility". It's on Symantec's Enterprise site.
I was finally able to remove every trace of the Symantec "bloatware." The uninstaller does not do this. Make sure you back up your entire system (I recommend SuperDuper) to a Firewire drive prior to doing this. I also recommend booting into Safe Mode to run the removal operation.

(More customer reviews)Bought this at the apple store seems to work fine I understand that my license for this product is for a year and thus far I like it. I'm no computer wise but the product does market itself welling showing it's ratings on popular websites. Now don't get me wrong no anti virus is prefect, but it is interesting to see whats really going on in your computer. My only real beef with the product is, is the security barrier any better than the virus barrier. I mean the product is contoured to apple uses but says you can use for Windows as well. I will say as a wireless user I like to set the option not to share information with my local area network or you have options on how you want each computer to operate you an have one work as a server. Restricted or non restricted browsing. I don't honestly know why you would do non restricted browsing expect to use a program you trust. Having used a few different types of anti virus this is probably my favorite so far. If this changes I will update, lastly please note it says this is for intel Macs meaning you need a relatively new Mac computer. I know many people have got confused due to packaging on many products. I will say too even tho this is pretty low intensive product I would recommend to any one who runs it to have 2 GB ram. I must say even for running Iwork at 1 GB ram I get a reasonable delay on when adding a graph in numbers.

Norton AntiVirus 11.0 For Mac Review

(More customer reviews)This software works but it really really really slow. Really really really slow. Slows my new imac to a crawl and the slowest of antivirus scans I've ever seen. Just changed over from the PC world and as a creature of habit keep antivirus installed. All the antivirus authors seem to have free trials except Symantec. Probably because you'd be really frustrated and not buy the program... This was the biggest waste of money I've spent on software in a long time. Two stars since it probably does it's job....if it ever finishes the scan. So far six hours on a month old computer.
Update: Well, no longer is it a waste of money. Talked with their very friendly New Delhi tech support and got a refund. Bought Intego and though it's expensive, it does the job efficiently.

A scan of my hard drive using McAfee antivirus failed to find the spyware. I went to McAfee Customer Support online chat. I chatted with someone in India. At his request, I provided details about my system and described the problem. He could not help, but suggested that I contact paid Technical Support. He said that they could remotely take control of my computer and remove the spyware. The charge is $89.95, guaranteed.
I declined the offer. I used Windows XP to restore my computer to the state that it had been the day before the infection. It took me about 15 minutes and removed the spyware completely.
I purchased the McAfee internet firewall and virus protection to prevent infections like this one. When the McAfee program failed, Customer Support would have had me pay $89.95 to remove the virus. No wonder the price of McAfee has come down so dramatically this year. They have a new unseen and unexpected revenue source. They just need to reel you in with the new low price and then stick you with the additional price of Customer Support.

(More customer reviews)Sure it works, but McAfee doesn't understand that McAfee is not exempt from the rules that its software enforces. They say they block pop-ups and adware. What they don't say is that they block all pop-ups EXCEPT POP-UPS THAT THIS PROGRAM GIVES YOU, ADVERTISING McAFEE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES!
If you install this, you will get:
1) Incessant pop-ups on your computer desktop asking you if you want to buy additional products or subscriptions from McAfee. Conveniently, McAfee Total Protection can't stop these pop-ups -- and McAfee support staff don't seem to understand why this is a problem. These McAfee pop-ups appear on your desktop and not in your browser, so any browser settings do not prevent them appearing. (The current round of ads is urging me to renew my anti-virus subscription, even though my current subscription doesn't expire for another 8 months.)
2) An entry called "McAfee" in the top-most level of your Start menu that you cannot move or remove. If you try, it will reappear within hours. Nice bit of advertising real estate, that, for it to say "McAfee" in the top level of your Start menu.
3) A desktop "McAfee" icon that reappears if you remove it. (There is a way to stop this particular annoyance, but you have to dig through the McAfee website for instructions, and following them requires you to tinker with your registry.)If you write to McAfee and tell them that their ads are not welcome on your computer, you may eventually get the following response as I did from one of their brilliant tech support people:
"It is really unfortunate that your computer got infected by virus when McAfee was installed. I suggest you to try some of the ?Free Virus Removal Solutions? before contacting our technician through paid service. Please visit the below link which will provide detailed information about our Virus Removal Services." In other words, install McAfee, get McAfee ads, complain to McAfee, get an offer from McAfee to sell you a service to remove the "virus" that "your computer got ... when McAfee was installed."So good software, EVIL COMPANY. Buy something else, as I will certainly be doing. Even if this one's free after rebate, it's still coming to you at a price.ADDENDUM: After suffering through McAfee's advertisements for so long, I finally gave up on them fixing the problem and uninstalled McAfee in favor of NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2011 (Amazon link: Norton Internet Security 2011 - 1 User/3 Pc). This was an excellent move. Not only does Norton not misbehave with its own advertisements (it even has an explicit setting to turn off "Special Offer Notification") and icon litter, but it has a much more-intuitive interface, it seems smarter in figuring out what the user needs without having to ask, and it even caught a trojan-infected file on its first scan that had been on my hard drive through 4 years of supposed McAfee protection. McAfee Antivirus Plus 2011 Review

(More customer reviews)I ordered this product from Amazon because it was on sale and we needed to have some sort of Antivirus software on our computer. Although our computer was running great, I wanted it protected. I read one review which stated that the product was pretty good. Since then, I see there are more reviews online. I typically don't rate products, but felt the need to share with everyone my experience. After installing McAfee, it has been one problem after another. Mcafee identified a "virus" which actually was a false positive. Everytime I log on it says to remove it and restart, after restart, the same message appears. After contacting McAfee about the problem, I was told I could pay $89.99 to have them remove viruses from the computer. What a coincidence. . . Interesting how the only way to fix it is for me to pay them money!
On top of all of that, Mcafee identified 'explore.exe' as a malicious file and removed it. Well 'explore.exe' is necessary for a computer to work. So without it, I now have no desktop icons and no start menu.
Bottom line, I thought I was getting a deal, instead I got a broken computer and will have to spend even more money to backup the hard drive and do an entire system install back to factory settings. Thanks a lot Mcafee.

(More customer reviews)During almost 30 years of computer experience I have used a lot of anti-virus/Internet security software. This includes Norton, BitDefender, Kaspersky, Panda, earlier versions of McAfee, and most recently AVG. None are ideal and a couple (BitDefender and Panda) caused me serious computer problems. McAfee was my choice for several years until it became cumbersome and excruciatingly slow as was Norton at that time. It was then that I began trying other products.
I always check user reviews of products, especially software, before making a purchase. I was unable to do so with McAfee Antivirus Plus 2011 because none were available. Reviews of McAfee products for 2010 were not favorable but because I was not pleased with other products I decided to give it a try nonetheless. I am not sorry that I did so. Boot time has decreased dramatically. McAfee Antivirus Plus 2011 doesn't impact computer operation. Scans can be done in the background without excessive slowing of other applications. (Most of my computer activity is working with video, photographs, and publication applications.)
I recommend McAfee Antivirus Plus 2011. To paraphrase an old Oldsmobile commercial "This is not your father's McAfee."
I didn't give McAfee Antivirus Plus 2011 five stars because nothing is perfect.

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2011 - 3 User Review

(More customer reviews)I uninstalled my expiring Kaspersky and installed Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security. The process took practically all day because there was so much that needed to be cleaned up, but after the installation was complete and my first full scan and system tuneup was done, WOW, my computer is a lot faster now! I'm having far less problems during and after booting up, too, because I set Trend Micro to delay loading startup programs until after the OS finishes booting.
I was sent the 1-PC version to review instead of the 3-PC version I thought I was getting. I was disappointed about this, because our household is wirelessly networked and I wanted to have a chance to see how our network as a whole behaved with the Trend Micro product protecting all of our computers. Too bad I can't address the product's performance at that level. I did have a brief snafu with our local network not being automatically recognized, but a quick and pleasant exchange with customer support via chat cleared that up quickly. (I just closed Trend Micro, connected manually to the network, then opened Trend Micro again. After that, it automatically recognized the other computers.) The real bummer is that I can't avail myself of the free 10GB online storage because the folder I need to have backed up is physically located on another computer on the network and that computer is not under license.
Now, I like the look of Kaspersky better, design-wise. Trend Micro's design is in-your-face macho; it reminds me too much of the familiar (to women) adage: "Avoid men driving red trucks like the plague." One photo in the installation sequence, that of a woman and child having fun on the computer in the foreground with the "strong silent type" male in the background purportedly protecting them from malicious intent smacked of sexism. But the program itself seems to be doing what it says it will do, and it's fast. I was always aware of Kaspersky doing its thing, but I hardly notice the Trend Micro Titanium. So unless something happens to demonstrate to me that this is all just an illusion that I am protected, I'm feeling good about the product.
One thing that really impressed me was that, when I turned on Data Theft Protection, about six hours later I got a message that my credit card information had been blocked from going out. I don't have any autopayments set up with anybody, and I wasn't doing anything requiring a credit card, so I was surprised that there was an attempt to get my credit card number. It's easy to set up this protection, and you control what you protect. I was protecting my email address, but it blocks some of my log-ins, so I turned that particular block off. I also enabled the Trend Micro Vault, which allows for remotely locking the files on your computer if it is stolen. This will be an important feature for travelers with laptops.
UPDATE: I am horrified (and happy now that I have Titanium Maximum Security) to see how often there are assaults on my computer trying to get my bank account info. The data theft protection reports blocking at least three attempts daily to get my account info. I am breathing easier, but also uneasy wondering how long this has been going on. This started happening after I entered one of the Big Prize contests on Facebook! Gadzooks! Facebook users beware!
FEEDBACK FOR TREND MICRO: I love the data theft protection feature, but I don't love the way there does not seem to be any way to turn the pop-up notifications off for it. (Turning off other notifications doesn't turn these off; somebody comment here if you've found a way.) If what I am working in is not that important, just clicking back into the window I want to focus on minimizes the notification from Titanium. However, some of the graphics programs I work in lose whatever was in their minds when a notification pops up, and I have to re-enter the information. Because these are often tricky settings, it's really frustrating. But I don't want to turn off the data theft protection because of the frequent assaults on my system. Please fix this in an update, Trend Micro!

(More customer reviews)The 3 machine license is not as advertised, you'll be disappointed if you think you are going to get a 3 machine 1 year FULL VALUE, that's not the deal. If all of your machines expire on exactly the same day, then you get that. If there is any anomaly, the license expires when you FIRST registered no matter when that was. Customer Support is just what you'd expect from a huge foreign conglomerate- useless, unless you like defensive pre-recorded platitudes.
IMO, the company and product has deteriorated over the past few years and they think they are too big and too good to worry about happy customers or honest customer service. I won't be buying this product again.

(More customer reviews)This software is a complete rip off (DON'T BUY IT). I bought December, 2009 with two year updates and it seemed to work ok. March 12, 2010 it refused to update after requesting updates. Even after having gone in advanced and clicked the box to make it update automatically, clicked apply and then clicked "ok". I did this several times and once I left the screen I would receive a message, each time, saying "automatic update not available" even though this ability is clearly advertised on the box and within the software. What good is virus protection, etc. if it can not update?
The software is worthless and did not work well with anything about my computer (I bought in 2008) and I'm fairly knowledgeable of computers and software.
I contacted the company and received no response (this indicates to me they already know their software is worthless). Knowing my computer needed protection I immediately bought another virus protection software which works great and lives up to my expectations.
This is too expensive a lesson to learn (don't give your hard earned money away). Even if you look at Defender Pro you are wasting your time and I simply can't warn you enough about not purchasing.

Trend Micro Internet Security Pro Review

(More customer reviews)I have been using Trend Micro Internet Security for the past couple of years, and it's a good product. My license was up so I decided to upgrade to their Internet Security Pro program, which came out in September 2008. It has extra bells and whistles that improve your computer performance (much like Pitstop's PC Optimize or Norton 360) in addition to internet security and anti-virus protection.
The problem came in the installation. Because it wasn't just a simple 'add another year' to the existing license, but moving from one product to another product, the program simply wouldn't install. It hung up regularly during the install process and then automatically de-installed itself and shut down the computer. Frustrating!
I checked on multiple websites looking for a solution and tried all the ones I found. I talked twice to Trend Micro support people, and tried what they recommended and their suggestions didn't work either. Here's the list of suggestions received and tried that failed:
1. Running the Trend Micro Uninstall program (the "red-and-white lifesaver" icon) to de-install all previous versions of Trend Micro products that might be on my computer, one after another, and then rebooting the computer and trying to reinstall the program.

2. Uninstalling the program using CCLEANER or the UNINSTALL program in Windows XP Control Panel and then rebooting the computer and trying to reinstall the program.

3. Turning off the Windows Firewall and then rebooting and trying to reinstall the program.
What did finally work was to install the program using the CUSTOM INSTALL instead of the AUTOMATIC INSTALL program.
The idea came to me from watching where the program hung up when it was installing. It stalled and then uninstalled itself always at the same point in time: after the first round of the install procedure, when the console opens up with the six or seven red dots in a row, and then it installs each of the components. I realized it was hanging up always at the same point - installation of the Firewall.
So what I did was a CUSTOM install, where I UNCHECKED "install the Firewall". The whole program then loaded without a hitch - including the Firewall! I then updated the software and am "back in business".
I am posting this here because I did NOT find this method on line nor did the tech folks at Trend Micro suggest it - but it works.
