I've been using computers since the TI-994a (actually had one called a Timex Sinclair before that)and have been "online" since the Prodigy days and 300 baud modems. So I've been around the block when it comes to computers, internet and security software. I know how to install, uninstall and tweak my way through most issues without having to contact support...until this security suite.
I was previously using Norton 2011 and when this came up on Vine, I'm always looking to try new security suites. I fully removed Norton and during the BitDefender installation, it confirmed that no other security software is installed that would conflict with it (nice feature).I'm running a Windows 7 64bit Toshiba laptop with 3 GB memory and pentium processor so this shouldn't be a problem I thought. The installation went fine and I did a full system scan (took upwards of 6 hours), the product updated, requested a reboot and I thought we were off...
Unfortunately, although it initially recognized registration key, it appears to have lost that or not worked correctly. I can't get the services to start and I'm supposed to contact BitDefender support directly from within the program...well that's great IF the program will run. So off to the website, go through my account I was required to establish with BitDefender and have already left a tech support ticket within 12 hours of installation. I can't say as though I've ever had to do that.
I'm keeping my review 'neutral" at 3 until I hear back from support and determine if this is fixable. I'll keep you updated on any resolution they find.
**UPDATE** 9/22/10
Support contacted me within 36 hours asking me manually run a support tool that was to capture information and then I was to send the file off to them. I did all of that and while I've been waiting, I uninstalled and reinstalled. This time all went as before, but it took my account information for good. Maybe it was something you need to do first, actually create your account online, then install...not sure but it has worked fine since the reinstall. It's doing a full system scan which it estimates will be done in 2 hours +
**UPDATE** 9/29/10
So I thought I would take advantage of the additional licenses and install on my laptop upstairs and then use the "network" feature. This feature allows you to create the server and client pc and run all updates, scans etc from the server to the client. Sounds nice doesn't it. So, I installed the product upstairs, rebooted and went to my server laptop to begin. I enabled the network with a password (the client also has a password) and if you choose the same password for both, the server pc is "supposed" to recognize it and add it automatically...didn't happen. So I thought I would add it manually. It shows up in the network space, has the pc icon with the bitdefender icon on top of that which lets you know this computer can be added. Click on it and select and..."Can't add computer as it is not running BitDefender or can't be added"...Really?? Even after your program is telling me it sees that it is running BitDefender? So off to technical support again. I have to give them props as I have gotten very timely responses. This go around however, the list of items they wanted me to do (including stopping certain services within the product) just wasn't worth the effort. Shouldn't antivirus/network control truly be set it and forget it? My Norton 2011 was that way, and I've had to fiddle way too much with this program already.
All in all, I've been disappointed in the product and happy with tech response time. Not many people are willing to go through support ticket after support ticket just to get their virus protection working.
UPDATE 10/1/10
Well, I've gone back to Norton. Too many issues with BitDefender even with a 2 year license key. Particularly annoying was the fact that my pc kept registering problems with security (bitdefender out of date and antivirus scans) I just wasn't going to put up with it anymore.

Bitdefender Total Security 2012 Standard M2 3Pc/1 Year Review

It began causing random freezes and crashes on my computer. I was sent on a military assignment that took me past the 30 day return period. When I called tech support they informed me that that was too bad, and they could "try" to help me fix the problem. They didn't. Now in the process of escalating my complaint to a manager, while being informed that I will receive the same level of "service" from the manager and be denied.
Haven't received a call back, but this AV (while pretty secure), causes LOTS of computer issues. I build custom, high end computers and mine has never crashed before installing this AV. Now it's crashed 3 times in a week. It slows down all your browsing to a crawl, and has services that still run after being disabled from it's menu.
Get something else.

Internet Security Barrier X6 Review

(More customer reviews)The three components I attempted to use were the Spam Barrier, Personal Backup, and of course Virus Barrier.
Spam Barrier overrides OS X Mail's perfectly good "Junk" mail filtering with its own overly aggressive system that is set to block almost everything (including Amazon and NewEgg e-mail order acknowledgements), while interfering with your mail providers' "Spam" mail folders.
Personal Backup, when set to full "clone" mode, sometimes backups the Mac's hard drive and sometimes doesn't. When it does, it may or may not back up the whole drive. This may depend on the phase of the Moon; I haven't tested that yet.
The Virus Barrier is the worst offender. Its obtuse, non-intuitive, overly layered setup is outweighed only by its ridiculously aggressive scanning and network traffic monitoring. Don't expect innocuous items like thumb drives, disk image (DMG) files, or iTunes Store access to work without a lot of manual intervention - in fact, you have to create so many exceptions to the "rules," that it obviates the need for this virus checker in the first place.
As a final PC-like indignity, attempting to uninstall this Intego product is a chore, given its Windows-like littering all across your HD with Intego preferences, documents, and the like.
This is going back, and I'll try the free ClamXAV a try. It can't be any worse!

(More customer reviews)I had heard great things about bitdefender from my parents, who have it on their computer and have had no major issues with it, so I decided to give it a try. This was the worst decision I've ever made when it comes to anti virus software. I have had Norton, Mcafee, PC Security Shield, and Kaspersky. All of which have been pretty friendly to my pc. Bitdefender was not so kind.
I started off by trying to install it onto my computer (run on Windows xp-32 bit). Once it scanned and I got things going it suggested that I remove all my other antivirus software, ok. I proceeded to hit next to allow it to remove the software for me and all of the sudden error messages began popping up. It kept saying things like bitdefender has encountered an error and must close, you must restart your computer. I restarted only to come to a blue error screen saying my computer has shut down to prevent further damage. I restarted and hit f8 to run in safe mode, did a system restore, and tried again. Same result.
So I gave up on my computer and went to my wife's laptop with Vista. Same error messages same prompts to restart etc. Once I finally got her computer to accept the software I restarted and now faced the problem of NOTHING working. Her entire computer froze, nothing would open or do anything. I even had a hard time getting the task manager to open. So by this time I'm already frustrated and I give up on her pc and go back to mine. I did another system restore and left my computer run without protection.
I hadn't completed the full registration of my product so I had to contact customer service via email. It took them 4 days to get back to me with my problem only to instruct me to do a system dump of my information so they could analyze it. I did what they asked and waited another 4-5 days. Another email. I followed the instructions exactly in the email and encountered the same exact issues, I just took different steps to get there.
I decided to give it one more chance. I went through with the complete registration and confirmed through my email, so I could at least earn the privelage of contacting them by phone!! This wasn't much better. All 3 times I called I spoke with someone I could barely understand and had to ask "what?" several times. I followed through with everything they told me to do in the first phone call.....computer crash. So I call back again....crash. So I call back again, they tell me to do the same things again, like I didn't hear them the first time, and treat me like I'm computer illiterate.
Finally I decided to just try things on my own again using the files they had given me to download and install. I tried one more time to install the product and ignored all the error messages and the computer prompts to restart my computer. I completed the installation and ran all the clean ups through bit defender, got everything turned on and updated, and then I closed out of everything and restarted my computer manually. SUCCESS!! So far so good, I have restarted 5 times successfully and have not had any major issues.
THIS HAS BEEN A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE. I've read reviews online about how awesome BitDefender's customer service is. I beg to differ. I should have stuck with Kaspersky. I now have a 3 PC package that cost me almost 70 dollars that I barely got to work on one Computer. I'm not even going to try to go through this again on my wife's laptop.
I hope this helps anyone considering buying this product. I would definitely not reccommend.

But on one of my computers I had to reinstall my wireless printer it had taken the firmware off. I tried using the technical support which they refused to help, that was the only draw back. I had to reinstall the printer and everything is working great I would strongly recommend.

Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2008 3-User Review

I am posting it in both places because I see the review prior to this one was posted for both products also, and I don't think that reviewer gave the product a fair shake, as I expand upon below.)I haven't bought this product yet, but I have just downloaded and installed the free 30-day trial version Of Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2008 and am VERY pleased with it so far. Running Vista, I have had problems with some security products in the past (including Trend Micro) but it appears they have now corrected those problems with this newly-released product.
Frankly, the review immediately prior to mine seems dubious. He submitted reviews for TWO Trend Micro products, claims he purchased them both on the same day, and submitted identical (and very negative!) reviews for both products! Why would he buy a second product from the same company if he was so disappointed with the first one?? He panned both Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 AND Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2008. I smell a fish.
What I found was that the free 30-day trial version of Trend Micro Internet Security Pro 2008 installed flawlessly and has a VERY clear user interface. It detected and removed numerous spy cookies. It scanned my files quickly and found no viruses. No surprise there because I had been running a competitor's product for the past month, which kept my PC clean. I've been evaluating several competing security suites for my new Vista system until I decide which one I want to purchase. ZoneAlarm seemed to work well, as did Bitware. My impression is that the Trend Micro Pro is the most complete of the three, and has the clearest user interface. All three cost about the same. I'll give the Trend Micro another week or so of use and then make my purchase, which at this point I think will be the Trend Micro, probably not the "Pro" version but instead the simpler Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 version. It lacks a few of the features of the "Pro", but they're not features I'm apt to use and it costs about $20 less.
Based on my use so far, I really don't have any idea what the prior reviewer is talking about. If you go to the Trend Micro website, there's a link, in plain view, right on the order page which allows you to select whatever renew option you desire - automatic or not - as well as allowing you to select either 1 year, 2 year, or 3 year. And it clearly says "3 user" also, not "1 user" as he claimed. Frankly, his review sounds like sour grapes. Maybe he works for a competing security product? Else why would he submit two identical reviews for two different products from the same vendor, and both reviews claim that he dislikes that vendor intensely???
I don't work for Trend Micro (although I have used their product in the past when I had XP and was pleased with it) nor do I work for any other software security company. I'm just your typical PC user, trying to find a good product for my Vista system. I encourage others to try the free Trend Micro trial products (they offer several versions to pick from) for themselves. But as I said earlier, my impression is that it's now the best of the lot, and I have tried Bitware, Microsoft's suite (I forget what they called it but it was "Onestop" or "TotalCare" or something like that), Norton's version for Vista, and ZoneAlarm, so I have a pretty good basis for comparison.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011 3-User Review

(More customer reviews)First of all anti-virus software always slows your computer down. I don't know why people write reviews commenting out that. What is important is how much does this software slow you computer down in comparison to Norton or symantec or whatever you are using. I have found this program superior in all respects of performance it does not slow you computer down as much as other anti-virus software and in my opinion the updates are faster and the protection better than Norton with out a bunch of stuff you don't want/need. The only thing is you have to buy the program from amazon every year. The renew activation codes you download through the Kaspersky website seem to not work too well. Bottom line this is best anti-virus program.

BitDefender Antivirus Pro 2011 Value Edition - 3 PC/2 year Review

(More customer reviews)First, the good stuff: I lost a system to a nasty malware program that spoofed my AVG free antivirus software and fooled my nine-year-old into clicking the button that installed it. I had BitDefender 2010 installed on a different system, and it CAUGHT that bug and killed it dead, no problem. So, I have no problem swearing by the antivirus component of this software.
However, the system requirements listed with the quickstart guide make it clear that my older P4 system is not going to like this update. Supposedly, it will run on an 800 mHz machine, and mine is 3.2 Ghz, but I have only 2 gb of ram (that's all the motherboard will accept), and the program itself wants a whole gb to install. That's pretty hefty, and I'm not willing to take a performance hit on that machine, which, despite its age, is a reliable member of our home network.
I installed it on my dual core athlon 64 system instead. This is the same system that was saved by BitDefender 2010. In performing the install, which took awhile, it recommended that I delete some old antivirus software that I was no longer using (I must have skipped this step last year, when I installed the 2010). I followed the recommendation, but the installer also deleted a file I needed to boot Windows XP. So, to finish the job, I needed to go find my Windows disk and repair my Windows installation. Total pain.
But, then, back to the good: Once I'd repaired my Windows installation, the BitDefender AV 2011 ran very quickly, taking only about 20% of my resources. It also comes on a rescue disk (something I could have used for the other system when it died last summer). I'm actually very happy with the way the program works. I have it set to the expert interface, which is still very user friendly. When it runs in the background, it doesn't take up any resources. Videos play smoothly. Everything works great. There's even a gamer mode, which exposes you to a bit more risk but preserves performance speed better (as noted, I do not have any speed issues on my system).
For the purchase price, you get to use it on 3 pcs. I am going to install it on my Mac Mini's windows partition.
I deducted one star because the program's system requirements could be less stringent and because installation should not require a windows repair, but I'm still a big fan of how well the actual antivirus software works.

(More customer reviews)When it has honestly came down to the best in antivirus protection, we honestly don't get the best in what we want. For Bitdefender, they have made not just the best in ANtivirus programs, but the simplest, and most convient in antivirus programs. I've noticed it before with last year's Bitdefender Antivirus 2010, and it continues on beautifully with Bitdefender Antivirus Pro 2011. It is a simple and easy to setup & customize how you want to check for spyware, and viruses without losing the speed of your computer. I like it because it is simple, and not very complex like most anti-virus softwares, and it does a speedy job at scanning your computer, without wasting so much time on your other programs. I absolutely recommend BitDefender Antivirus 2011 as a must buy for your computer cleaning needs.
