I purchased this software which is updated to run on my Mac Book with Snow Leopard. The install was easy and after about 15 minutes of "training" it to recognize my voice, it worked almost perfectly. My first email contained only a single-word error. Impressive results considering my experience with earlier versions of dictation software. It comes complete with a wired head-set microphone and connects easily via USB.
I'm very happy with this purchase and would recommend it to Mac users who need a hands-free solution for writing emails, letters and execute basic commands in many Mac applications.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Professional Review

(More customer reviews)I am a quadriplegic and originally purchased Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Professional for its ability to command WindowsXP, to dictate using Microsoft Word, navigate the internet using Microsoft Internet Explorer and Firefox, and to type messages during my IM sessions using AOL Instant Messenger. Although the program worked as promised for a time, as soon as Internet Explorer, Firefox and AIM came out with software version updates Dragon failed to function to spec. It still dictates in Word, and its native Dragon Pad. It does not do so consistently with my browsers, IE7 Firefox 2 or AIM 6.5. I was hoping there would be service updates as the products it is supposed to function with evolved, but that hasn't been the case. I am using a state of the art headset and my system far exceeds the suggested system requirements for the program. I dictated this comment in Dragon Pad and had my attendant cut and paste it onto Amazon.

You Don't Know Jack Vol. 5 - Offline Review

It has more questions then the previous games in the durable PC series, The best host in the game-Cookie-is again at the helm making sure that your quest for game dollars is a sarcastic and smart allecky one, and those phoney commercials at the end of the game as always are gold. So why not 5 stars? Well this game has got some flaws, but they all mostly fall in the same catagory. One is that it takes away from game 4, THE RIDE format, which in my opinion was the best. THE RIDE helped with the looping question problem as well as the possiblity that anyone can win near the end, unlike others where it is sometimes pretty obvious. But since this game supposed to be best of the netshow game, it was unavoidable. The biggest flaw is the extreme re-use fo older jokes, music and sound bites from previous games, particularly game 3. Offline was the frame to hold the new questions on, for those who do not get the netshow, but I guess the jokes and sound slipped off the side. Regardless, Offline is not a bad game, it is YDKJ, it is still a blast, and if you haven't played any of the games, it's a good place to start, and veterans will more then likely want it too. Those veterans however aren't going to find anything exciting or new, with the exception of the new Pissed About a Question feature, a slightly new question type in which angry players who vented to the company with their frustrations get well, vented back. Over all, a good game, but it could have been better.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Preferred Upgrade Review

(More customer reviews)I have been a long term user of Dragon Dictate - Dragon Naturally Speaking having first bought into the software during version 3. Although I liked version 8 I have religiously upgraded to enhance the performance of this very complicated and what I hope to be useful software...this version promises to be the first that will be able to recognize more then one voice and reach 96% or better recognition. Which means I will finally be able to spend more time dictating then editing. That catch thus far has been Nuance. The DVD that came with my order has a corrupt file on it and I have emailed, I have called customer service who forwarded me to tech support which had a robot voice that told me that I might be charged $ 15.00 and should have my credit card ready and then was put on hold for a considerable amount of time...how long you might ask...the first day it was 42 minutes before I gave up and went back to work...I am not paid to sit on hold with the people I pay to sell me working software and my supervisor did not understand. Today I was on hold twice, the first time for about 33 minutes - when I had to go to a meeting and the second time for 72 minutes until the battery in my phone died. Another current concern is that Nuance's tech support is only open M-F from 9am to 8pm eastern time: meaning that I will have to wait another weekend to ask permission to use their software. I never talked to a tech support human being, but heard that they were busy serving other customers for a very long period of time. My guess is that there was a mistake someplace in production and none of the current copies are working and that is why everyone is calling. This does not mean that the software is not good and that my review will be as negative as this current (first one) once things are worked out on their end...I am strongly advising that you wait for them to get the bugs out of their support and DVDs prior to ordering.

This is a review of version 1.5:
Okay here we go this is a review of MacSpeech 1.5 I will not be correcting any of the errors while I dictate this review. I have done all of the training as of now as to make its recognition the best possible.
One thing to note you cannot use an internal mic on a Mac computer with this version you need to use an external mic. Now I feel this is horrible and needs to be corrected as it makes it way more inconvenient to use. I feel you should at least be given the option. (note: While Speech Recognition software works "best" with a good mic, reading the mac speech forums you find many users were satisfied by the results of their internal mac mics. Now that it is dropped with out the option of using inter mics, leaves users high and dry)
Up to this point in the review I'm amazed at how perfect it has captured all of my speech. I have been using speech recognition for many years so I understand speaking in word clumps, which is essential for speech recognition software.
Now I haven't tried setting up custom words in their new editor, but will at some point if I come across a word that I use like LOL, wow it even got LOL if he doesn't understand something I go back and type it in by hand.
As you can tell the software is spot on!
Here I will repeat the Gettysburg address:
Four score and seven years ago our fore fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met here on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dictate a portion of it as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

Pretty much spot on this program is 98% accurate by my accounts that is really awesome. E
my setup is a tabletop mike running to a mixing board that runs into my Mac. I'm sitting about 8 inches from the Mike and it's picking up perfect recognition I'm using a high-quality mic ( $70 XLR)

Also send the company some e-mails requesting they add back the option of internal mics is the one serious flaw in this otherwise great program.

I have been a dragon date the user (DragonDictate user) on and off for years. And Dragon dictate was very good, and I think that MacSpeech picks up there. This review will be unedited so any words that are wrong or words that MacSpeech has gotten wrong.
I use a desktop microphone since I am disabled facing the hassle up putting on a headset is daunting. I think the principle reason many people fail with speech recognition is that you need to speak in Word clumps, and pronounce each word clearly.
With this in mind I sit about 6-8 inches away from my microphone and get almost perfect recognition. I also make it a habit to do all the training that is available, this way the program understands what I sound.
So as you can see from this review, MacSpeech did a rather well job of capturing everything that I want to say.
The only real complaint I have, is where is the health (help) section. Hopefully they improve this in future releases, not having a PDF manual to look at is kind of annoying. And also I have not found a way to train specific words as I save them (say them) this needs to be remedied ASAP.

Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 Review

(More customer reviews)I'm waiting for the day when software becomes more expensive than the actual hardware to run it (it should happen soon, considering the trend in computer prices these days, right??). In the meantime, I'm happy that Microsoft at least offers a lower-priced version of their software for those pursuing academic endeavors.
The Microsoft Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 is basically identical to their standard Microsoft Office 2003. It contains:
- Excel 2003
- Outlook 2003
- Powerpoint 2003
- Word 2003
What it does NOT contain (compared with the professional and small business versions) is Access 2003, Publisher 2003 and the Outlook 2003 version that has a Business Contact Manager - none of which would be particularly necessary for students.
Microsoft stresses that this version of their Office 2003 is only for non-commercial use. You qualify for this edition so long as you are 1) a full- or part-time student enrolled in a K-12 institution, 2) home-schooled, 3) taking at least 6 credits at an accredited college/university, or 4) a full- or part-time faculty member and work 20+ hours at a school.
It retails at the amazon price, which seems like a lot until you remember that the Standard version is sold for over two hundred dollars more. There is no discounted upgrade price for the academic version, but this is still probably the best price you can get. AND you can use the software on up to three computers, so long as someone in your household qualifies (for instance, if you have a child who qualifies for this version, you can upload it onto your computer as well and use the software even if you do not qualify for the discount).
If you are a college/university student, I would suggest visiting your school bookstore before purchasing this software. Microsoft offers academic volume licensing through a lot of colleges/universities, where you can get the same software for up to 70% off if you qualify. (More customer reviews)MS Office XP is the best Office to date. It has minimal bugs, and number of nice usability features. The educational edition sells for what the suite should normally be priced at. The full, non-upgrade price is obscene.
Read the license carefully. Not only must you be a student or teacher, but you must agree to stop using the software the day you graduate or stop teaching. If you wish to continue using MS Office, you're obligated to shell out four times as much for the retail version.
You should look carefully at the other office suites available. MS has been king of the hill for awhile, but Corel's suite will easily handle everything 95% of MS Office users need, at a fraction of the retail price.

(More customer reviews)I have been using Norton to protect my computers since the 80's. Since I am a long time repeat customer, that says it all. I have tried others that worked well, but found that Norton was the least intrusive. Going about it's business in the back ground and leaving me alone. I really like the ability to turn off Norton anti-virus from the task bar when I'm installing new software, instead of burrowing down thru clicks and clicks to turn it off on it's home page. Buying this combo saves me time, effort and money. I only have to watch for one date of renewal on my computers. I used to write on my disks which one went to which computer. No longer - one disk for all! Do you own more than one computer and have been buying the single version for each one? Then you already are aware of the great value of this combo.

(More customer reviews)I upgraded from pcAnywhere 10.5 to 12.5 because 10.5 was poorly written and caused numerous programs to blow up on my system(awvid5.dll) I HOPED that 12.5 would have been a new improved version because I need remote access to my systems. Unfortunately after installing 12.5 a whole new set of issues surfaced. Instead of pulling my hair out, I uninstalled 12.5 and set up a VPN on my home system and am now using UltraVNC. It does the same thing and is FREE. (Did I mention free?) Save your money.

Microsoft Plus SuperPack for Windows XP Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this software thinking that I could take my digital images, create a slide show with music, and then burn it to dvd for the family to watch.
Unfortunately, the disk that I got gave me some error messages that when I called tech support (one hour hold time)they told me that my error message meant that I could create files, but they'll only run on my computer, not on my tv dvd player. In addition, you need to buy additional dvd burning software, because the dvd burning software imbedded in this software package will only create dvds that will run on a dvd player with the Microsoft logo on them. (The package says the dvds will run on almost any dvd player)
So I asked for my money back. However, since it took me more than 30 days to find all of this out, they refused a refund.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9 Preferred Review

(More customer reviews)The original title of my review was going to be "snookered again," but I've since had a change of heart (and sound card). I originally purchased Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 4 years ago which was a total piece of junk. Upon hearing a short review on NPR, it sounded like things had improved.
First off, caveat emptor. You need a good sound card. Nuance is not very helpful here. Their website/docs simply state you need a Sound Blaster 16. I don't know if it's occurred to them you can't purchase a Sound Blaster 16 card anymore (nor would you want to), and they should just bite the bullet and present a list of cards that work well (like they do for microphones). I bought a Sound Blaster X-fi XtremeMusic which seems to work. Second, you need a hefty machine. For me this is a 2.4 GHz dual processor XP workstation with a gig of RAM. The box says you can get by with 512 MB of RAM and a 1 GHz processor, I'm not sure I believe this.
Once you have the right hardware in place the software seems to work fairly well. This review was dictated using the software. However, I'm not giving them five stars because they still seem to suffer from poor software engineering. As an example, take the set up and training process. I was waiting for a new sound card to arrive and thought I would try using my onboard sound card built into my Dell. The setup process did claim that the sound quality was insufficient. Unfortunately, navigating out of the process was impossible leaving me stuck at the "welcome to general training" screen. When the new sound card arrived, Dragon was still stuck looking at the on board sound system and had no UI to allow me to use the new sound card. My only solution was to disable the onboard sound system which luckily forced Dragon back into configuration mode where I could reselect my microphone parameters. A second example of amateur software development was an error message ("can't load compatibility module") that is caused by Dragon's attempt to build a link between icons on the desktop and voice commands. This message wouldn't be so bad if it were not accompanied by random crashes ("dragon is unable to respond, please close all applications using..."). A recently posted knowledge base article states that the error message only comes up if links are invalid on the desktop, and suggest removing things using RegEdit (I kid you not). After uninstalling a SonyEricsson desktop link that I wasn't using, the message went away along with the random crashes.
In summary, Dragon has matured from snake-oil ware (v4) to usable. However, they need to make an investiment in the non-voice rec modules of their software.

Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Platinum 20 Review

(More customer reviews)This program is MUCH IMPROVED! If you'll see my review of Mavis Beacon 17 I believe it was, you can see where I pointed out this programs flaws. However, these have all been resolved and this program has become satisfactory in every way in my opinion.
Mavis Beacon 20 (I have only tried the platinum edition) also has a new practice feature which I haven't found anywhere else, where you can choose from a huge selection of articles where you just type right along with the text while the text you type appears in the lines in between the text to type (no looking halfway down the screen to see mistakes), errors appear in red and make a little noise to let you know that they have occurred. This is a great practicing tool for after you learn all the keys and want to stay sharp. I should also add that these articles are legitimate or legitimate style articles that are actually interesting and fun to type (such as outtakes from Ben Franklin's biography, to scientific articles, many topics) unlike those boring, fake ones that usually are in place on typing programs (which make you feel like you're back in elementary school) and you can even import your own text.
This has really been turned into a very fine program and out of all the programs out there (I've tried alot of them) this one without question gets the highest recommendation. All features have become very practical and user friendly. There's also a ten key learning portion of the program (as with the older versions as well) The interface also has been spiffed up very nicely with pleasing graphics a whole array of new and actually fun games. Bravo to Broderbund for setting the bar to new heights in this program.
---------------UPDATE------------------
I've got to admit, I learned all of the keys typing on mavis beacon 17, but I doubt that it's any harder on MB 20. The main thing that was really lacking on MB 17 (besides being a junky program) was that you couldn't repeat lessons, which you can now do on MB 20. If you're looking for a program with no small glitches but is much more boring and with less features, then you should look into TypingMaster Pro which you can demo, which is a fine program by the way and If MB is too difficult for you then TypingMaster teaches two keys at a time, however I can't remember how many MB would jump up at a time, however you could always just repeat lessons until you get it. Overall if I was having to spend money on something that I was planning to use for a long time, I would pick Mavis Beacon any day simply because of the practice feature, which I use EVERYDAY. On any other program, after you've learned all the keys, the only thing you can do to practice is to take the final tests over and over again. Unless you go right into a daily regimine of heavy typing, then you will get rusty real fast and this feature makes for an easy and interesting way to stay sharp. You can try a flash demo of MB 20 from their web site. Also, There's an annoying feature on mavis beacon where a hand is displayed on the screen typing the keys as you type, this can be turned off in the options. If you look, there's actually not a whole lot out there to choose from when it comes to typing programs, but I've tried about every one I could find, and this would easily be my choice. If people who don't like it find a more useful program, then they should list it in the comments for this review. I'll finish by saying that TypingMaster might be a little easier to learn on, but I own both of them and still use MB everyday and deleted TypingMaster off of my computer a long time ago. It may all depend on how you want to use it.

(More customer reviews)What a fantastic program. I bought it as a replacement for Windows Explorer really, but it does so much more.
First off, as far as a file managing tool (replacement for Explorer) it is really nice. It defaults to opening two windows for viewing different folders, but that can be configured as you wish. When you start the program, it will show you the same folder views that you'd used previously. A great help if you regularly manage files from the same locations.
It also has built-in zipping, file-sync (backup)and FTP connectivity features. The toolbars across the top give you access to many features, no need of digging thru the pull-down menus. Clicking on the drive letters displayed at the top will scroll the window down to view that location.
You can turn on a window to view files as you select them. It will show the contents of many different file types, even AutoCAD drawings. That will save me a lot of time in searching for a particular file.
It's easy to use and powerful, that's a great combination.

(More customer reviews)I've been designing and implementing websites for 7 years. Half for work, and half for fun. I am an electrical engineer and have been using Frontpage, GoLive, Dreamweaver, notepad, you name it. I've gotten pretty good at figuring out how to manipulate tables, javascript, alignment, clear GIF's for spacing, etc. HOWEVER, these programs have never been truly what you see is what you get for me. And my webpages always looked differently in Netscape, Safari, Explorer, Opera, Firefly, etc. Really different.
But now with SiteSpinner, everything that took me 7 years to learn and figure out, I learned with SiteSpinner in under a few days. The message boards are great with employees? and people who give real answers that work.
Also, I've even stopped using tables for alignment now because it's so easy to just drag and drop images and text anywhere you want. Then you can control positioning of objects by clicking below.
Bottom line: If you are a beginner wanting to make professional webpages, you gotta get this. For people like me that are pretty experienced, you still gotta get this. I am finishing up a completely overhauled company website now that I budgeted 2 months to do. 4 days so far, and 2 more days to finish.
