StompSoft PC BackUp Review

StompSoft PC BackUp
Average Reviews:

This program was difficult to use, with a counter-intuitive user interface, complicated scheduling sequences, and at least on my computer - faulty software altogether. Constant error messages, inability to restore individual files successfully, and time/date stamps that were reading the year 2047, and no way to change that, etc...
I bought this instead of Acronis True Image, because I wanted to save the $15 bucks. I figured as a single-computer, "home" use, I didn't need a program with advanced features.
So. The question is, was the 15 bucks saved worth hours and hours of head-scratching, and months of lacking of true backup protection?
Finally, I bought Acronis True Image Home 10, and set it up and had it running to my needs in under an hour. It works, it's professional-grade. Imagine your HD crashes. Imagine how much time you might have to spend to get up and running again. Is that worth skimping 15 bucks?

Norton Ghost 10.0 Review

Norton Ghost 10.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Surely, "Norton Ghost 10.0 Computer Back-up and Recovery" has the capacity to provide your computer with a straightforward back-up and recovery utilities. It even assumes an intuitive Windows-like interface, which makes it easier for new users to adapt to its functional tools. And, if you ever have the misfortune of encountering general system or storage failure, you will thank God for having it in place.
However, as long as nothing calamitious happens to your computer's hard-disk, this software will remain a voracious resources-parasite in your PC. It does this by drastically slowing down everything that your PC does: including printing from a simple text file. Another problem is installation. I have been called upon a number of times to help a friend or a relative, whose computers either frozed or suffered rainbow-screen syndrome, in the course of installing this scary "Ghost-of-a-software". And the hardest part of the problem is that it leaves you with no clue of what had gone wrong. Both the software's users manual and Symantec's website did not mention the possibility of this problem occurring: thus, leaving you out in the cold.
Complete systems shut-down, or manual switch-off (where normal shut-down refused to comply), followed by a fresh reinstallation was able to resolve this problem in about 60% of the affected systems (which I handled). The remaining 40% waited endlessly and in vain for help from Symantec's support department. But nothing ever happened, because the guys at Symantec were as confused as we were regarding the problem. They gave one suggestion after another, all of which failed to provide any solution to the problem. We ended-up uninstalling the software from the affected computers. The owners are now left with newly purchased items, which they may never use.
But despite all these, if you are lucky enough to experience a hitch-free installation, this software will certainly serve you well. But be sure to increase your system's RAM (if it is anything less than 512MB). If you fail to do this, your PC will be crawling like a tortoise even when handling a very simple task. It does not matter whether your have the newest processor in town!
Another point to note is that this software runs only on Windows 2000 Professional with Service-Pack 4, and on Windows XP (both Home and Professional editions). Be sure that you already have Service-Pack 4 installed, if you plan to use it with Windows 2000 Pro. The software does not run on Windows 9X, NT, or ME.
As long as your computer has 512MB or more memory, and you are able to overcome a possible installation problem, be sure that this software will do for you everything which Symantec claimed that it does.
Finally, let it be known that this "Norton Ghost 10.0 Computer Back-up and Recovery" software would have been an undeniable first-class utility, had Symantec fixed the bugs, which are currently making it hard to install and use.

Backing up your system might seem like a hassle, but when you lose your important data right before a big meeting, event, or project due date, you'll wish you had. Norton Ghost 10.0 makes backing up so simple that you will no longer have to worry about it--it automatically backs up any and all data, including photos, music, tax documents, and more, making it ideal for home users, too.
Norton Ghost 10.0 now automatically detects storage devices, analyzes your system, and offers the "best practice" backup advice during installation. The new one-step setup wizard makes installation and configuration even easier. It also automatically creates an initial backup schedule based on your computer's configuration. Plus, it will backup to virtually any media of your choice, including CDR/RW and DVD+-R/RW, USB and FireWire devices, Iomega Zip and Jaz drives, and more.

A handful of new tools make customizing and monitoring backups even easier. Backups are triggered by key events like new program installations or user logings. The one button "Backup Now" feature lets you create new backups on demand. Monitoring backups is easier with a task-based interface, and all scheduled backups are displayed in one convenient view along with the degree of backup protection for each drive. New for those who have Maxtor external drives is a Maxtor OneTouch button that automatically begins backing up your drives.
As always you can make incremental backups to help maximize space and save time, and you can make backups on the fly without restarting your computer. If something does go awry, it can recover system data even when you can't restart your operating system.

Norton Partition Magic 8.0 Review

If you have a Sony Vaio this review is for you. In the past Sony has created small C:\ drives and large D:\ drives. So C:\ quickly fills with additional programs and then you need PM to fix it (move some from D:\ to C:\). But I kept getting errors with PM running in Windows. Sony was no help, and Symantec (who makes PM) had one suggestion - run it in DOS. That solved the problem and then PM works well.
Want details? start PM in windows and select "create rescue discs". These boot the computer in dos. Next (this will all make sense when you actually do it) select D:\ and tell it to shrink that partition by, say, 10GB AND specify that the 10GB be located IN FRONT of the new, smaller D:\. This places the "set aside" space before D:\, but right after C:\. Then select C:\ and tell it to make C:\ larger by 10Gb. If you don't do these steps in this order the program doesn't detect any extra space to give to C:\.It took me hours of "playing with it" to figure this out, so I hope this saves someone some grief.

Rebit 5 Auto Backup Software Review

Rebit 5 Auto Backup Software
Average Reviews:

I wanted to backup to a local ESATA drive. I have about 500G of data, mostly HD videos from my camcorder. Using online backup for that would be a pain.
I've used three different backup solutions in the recent past (Novastor is the latest). This one is the simplest and the best for local backup. There's not much to configure: What do you want to backup and where do you want it. It took over a day to backup the 500GB even over ESATA (Note to self: get a 7200RPM local drive for faster backup instead of the 5400RPM). It continually backs up the data and I've noticed no performance impact on my PC.
A PCWorld review indicates that you have to monitor the backup disk to ensure it has enough space. So far, that's not a problem for me.
Thankfully, I've not had to restore the complete PC yet, but being able to browse the backup repositories and see the different versions of each file that has changed is reassuring. I can restore single files easily. I am partly going by faith here since I didn't test the full system restore, but so far, I am very pleased with the ease of use.

Acronis True Image Home 2010 Review

Acronis True Image Home 2010
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
True Image 2010 worked reliably for me, including 2 actual bootable hard-drive restorations. I've been using Acronis True Image in several versions over the years, and the previous 2009 edition was the nadir of their product line. For me at least, Acronis has redeemed themselves after the erratic and dangerous-to-your-data behavior of their last edition.
Pros: Disk imaging for TOTAL disk restoration capabilities, full and incremental backup, selective directory/file type data backup, editing capability of the backup image, back-up image mounting as a logical drive for easy viewing and cut & paste from image to other drives with Windows Explorer, live backup (use computer while backing), recovery manager in conjunction with Acronis Secure Zone (restoration of operating system drive while still having use of computer), bootable CD with backup and recovery capabilities, bootable from image of disk.
Cons: None that I could find so far. I am suspicious that uninstalling may be an issue, as it was in the past.
Major improvements from the past:
1) The Try & Decide feature now works even if a reboot is required for the newly installed application or system change. The Acronis Try & Decide can truly undo a change in its entirety, even if critical files are over-written, something window's System Restore could never do. But, System Restore could survive a reboot, which in the past Acronis couldn't. Now, all situations are covered by True Image 2010, and I have been able to fearlessly change, upgrade, or install on my system and effortlessly reverse the changes if I don't like the results.
2) USB/multi-boot support is robust. In the past, forgetting to remove a flash drive while using True Image could result in dangerously wacky behavior such as corrupting the master boot record or deleting the C:\ drive. Having a complex computer system, say USB drives and multiple operating systems, was a recipe for disaster. Legacy FAT32 application software also clashed if the Acronis Secure Zone was installed. All these past issues appear to be resolved. I did a backup and fully-bootable disk-image restoration for a Windows XP/Windows 7RC-64-bit multi-boot system using an external USB 2.0 hard drive for storing the images, with other USB flash drives plugged in, and 2 internal SATA hard disks in 4 partitions.
What I didn't test: I didn't make backups to DVD media; Acronis states it is possible make images spanning several DVDs.
Other Thoughts: A reasonable person might wonder why anyone such as myself would give Acronis another chance after the problems of the recent past. There are 2 things about this addition of True Image that I find very valuable compared to other imaging software I've tried: 1) The Try & Decide feature was always useful, but with the improvement to survive reboots it's now the single most important feature for me; I like to try a lot of new configurations, and completely undoing experiments can be easily accomplished. 2) I have use of the computer while backing up, which makes it unobtrusive to do frequent backups.
Backup speed on my system is about 3 gigabytes/minute, so a drive with 120 gigs of data took about 40 minutes to image (and I could still surf the net during the process). Restoring a drive goes at 3 gigs/minutes based upon compressed image size, so a 9 gig image took 3 minutes to restore to the uncompressed size of 20 gigs.
Now, some general words of caution for would be users who are new to the disk imaging game. This type of software works with and independently from the host operating system. By its very nature it is a law unto itself, and the operating system can't really protect you from rogue behavior. The potential for trashing your system is very real. That's why I did extensive testing of True Image 2010 on a fully cloned system. I can't suggest strongly enough that BEFORE you install True Image to your computer's HD you should attempt to make a back up by simply using the bootable True Image CD in your optical drive. If you can't make a back up from the bootable CD, things may go badly should you choose to install True Image 2010 on your computer. Since this sofware interacts directly with the BIOS, be cautious about BIOS upgrades. Keep current with upgrades from Acronis. Finally, it's just a plain good idea to have partition management software (such as Acronis Disk Director or Active @ BootDisk) available for emergency use to recover deleted partitions. Sorry to make it all sound so scary, but any disk imaging software (acronis or not) is powerful stuff. And when things go wrong, the results can be quite bad.
My system as tested: Dual boot Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit/Windows 7 RC 64-bit; Acronis True Image Home 2010 software installed to 64-bit Windows 7 RC partition; Acronis Secure Zone (FAT32) partition installed; Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P motherboard w/Intel P45 + ICH10R Chipset and Award BIOS version F7; Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 processor.

DriveClone Pro Review

I am updating this review, and changing it to one star. One of the things that Fartsone can install on your computer is a 'snapshot' feature which can perform restore points similar to Windows restore points. This will install a splash screen boot program that can be invoked right after your computer's BIOS splash screen. WARNING, this can cause serious blue-screen-of-death errors that may not be recoverable. The ONLY reason I was able to recover from this is because I was also able to invoke an earlier Farstone restore point, which put everything back the way it was. Another reviewer who reviewed version 5 says that the snapshot feature installs it's own Master Boot Record, which is the problem. Also note the blue-screen-of-death errors reported by user "Backbutton" on this same page. I uninstalled the snapshot feature, and the problem went away. Farstone support was unable to provide me with a fix, or even own up to the problem. Speaking of Farstone support, they get a "F". They *might* respond *one* time with some one-sentence response. Any follow-ups questions from you are ignored. =========================
Edit update (Nov 30th,2009): My computer's motherboard died in October, which caused me to buy a new Dell computer with Windows 7. So now I've had a chance to evaluate Drive Clone 6 across two computers. Some bad news. I've learned AGAIN to NOT install the snapshot feature which installs bootable software between the BIOS boot screen and Windows. On both computers, this caused random blue screen of death errors. In both cases, when I removed this feature the problem went away.
Also, before getting my new computer (with Windows 7) I emailed Farstone and asked them if DriveClone was compatible with Windows 7. I was told it was. At the time I asked that question, Drive Clone 7 was not on their website. When I installed DriveClone 6 on Windows 7, I found out I couldn't make a DriveClone boot disk . When I emailed Farstone, I was told I should upgrade to Drive Clone 7 (another $29.99). All further questions from me were ignored.
As of the time I'm editing this (Dec 09), Farstone has a "F" rating with the Better Business Bureau. Based on my experience, this is well deserved.

Symantec Norton Ghost 15.0 - Single User Review

Symantec Norton Ghost 15.0 - Single User
Average Reviews:

Backups get A+:
1. Backing up over network, high compression, custom drivers loading is easy to do. You will backup in style
2. Superior and useful utilities.
3. Every imaginable problem from the legendary Ghost 2003 is fixed and improved.
4. No more .gho format anymore. The current format so far has handled some large partition backups for me. Full 30GB partitions to high compression is a breeze.
Restores get C-:
1. Right away after a partition recover, you will get the message "Please insert the Recovery disk". It will say "Error EA730002: Cannot find the driver database directory". How does this error stay in the product? It is one confusing message for a successful recovery. The recovery disk is really just the ghost CD.
2. Then there is the staged recovery mystery. With 2 identical machines of the same hardware, I can only restore to the machine where I initially did the cold backups. I don't understand. This is ruining my confidence in the product. We are talking same motherboards, same versions, everything.
3. What other kind of hardware replacement will prevent my restores? Should I buy another backup product just in case?

Paragon Backup & Recovery 10 Home Review

Paragon Backup and Recovery 10 Home
Average Reviews:

I am not a professional reviewer, but I know good software when I use it. I have tried all the Backup and Revcovery software out there, including Acronis, and Norton Ghost. I like Acronis's User Interface better, but that's all. Paragon has worked flawlessly for me in several different situations, where I could not get Norton or Acronis to work. Paragon works better than all the rest when it comes to storing a backup on another machine on the network, or locally.
I can count on Paragon to keep performing the job day after day unattended without failure.
I can always count on Paragon to do a restore from the image it created, which is the most valuable asset Paragon has. I have had "other popular software" fail in this, thinking that my systems were backed up daily, then when attempting a restore, FAILURE to restore!!
Paragon is the Most reliable and the Best Bang for the Buck. I'm sold on Paragon.
