When the laptop was stolen (it was in a backpack in an unlocked car) we contacted Lojack. (Keeping the box is helpful to remind yourself that you have Lojack on the laptop, but all the info is on the website.) They told us to file a police report and to give them the report number. We did. We could contact Lojack for status reports. They put us in touch with the LAPD detective, who called us when he got a search warrant and then called to say he had the laptop. It took four weeks. We only got back the laptop, not the backpack with the peripherals and other stuff, but we were very happy to get the laptop back. I recommend Lojack for Laptops.
After you install it, you can go to the Lojack website to see whether Lojack for Laptops is operational on your laptop(s).

Sesame Street Elmo's Art Workshop Ages 2-6 Review

Sesame Street Elmo's Art Workshop Ages 2-6

Of all the software, our five-year old likes this program the best. It's 'user friendly' and can entertain for a long period of time. Projects include Stickers (where the child can complete a picture using point and click), Costumes (dress up characters in outfits and outrageous accessories), and Coloring Book scenes with an 'automatic fill' feature. These can be painted or colored, rubber stamped, or personalized and can be printed out. Hours of fun. Wonderful graphics. The sticker pages include scenes for both boys and girls: outer space, picnics, birthday parties, snow scenes, beach, etc. I highly recommend this software.

Fritz Chess - Grandmaster Challenge III Review

Fritz Chess - Grandmaster Challenge III
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am writing my first review for Amazon for two reasons: I have benefitted greatly from others who did so without my replying in kind; secondly, the chess-playing world is in need of an insanely cheap and capable chess program, which this is.
First, don't be fooled by the cartoonish retail packaging for this product. This is very serious chess software from a very serious chess publisher (Chessbase out of Germany) for everyone from beginner to very serious chess players. Chessbase does a great job of marketing their products to different strata of users, and it does this, primarily, by re-releasing its chess engines (named, in serial fashion, "Fritz") in less-expensive formats. Grandmaster Challenge III employs the engine Fritz 8; Grandmaster Challenge II used Fritz 7, etc. The current cutting-edge retail (non-professional) Chessbase offering is Fritz 11. (I wouldn't have gone beyond Fritz 7 but was curious what graphical enhancements this program had. These are, alone, worth the few dollars that this program costs and are included in the 3D boards and the annotation function.)
Many reviewers dislike the Chessbase Fritz series because the interface is, allegedly, complicated, unexplained, too arcane for beginning to intermediate players, whatever. I can tell you that I have, by and large, no business being near a chessboard, unless it is to clean it. I can also tell you that this program is NOT too difficult to learn to use and is exquisitely designed to usher the user into the pleasure of a mature chess experience without a bunch of nonsense, like ethereal background music or eerily moving pieces, obtainable from other publishers . The "online" help included on the CD is enough to instruct anyone on the nuances of the program. But NOTE: the game does not possess an intuitive way of switching sides, like clicking "switch sides". Rather, one must click on the "Game" menu, then "Infinite Analysis"; next, under "View", select "Flip Board", then make your move. (There is no option for "Flip Board Off", which is what one may like to do at this point.)
For the lay user of chess software, Chessbase introduced, in the days of yore, a program of some distinction called Extreme Chess, distributed by Simon Schuster. (It must have been something like Fritz the First.) It had, by the standards then, a lovely little 3D chess board of pleasingly contrasting pieces in gray and butterscotch, the hues of which were continued in the first Grandmaster Challenge program. (From that program I was able to carry over the hue and saturation configuration settings to this program's "old 3D board", a menu option under the View selection in the menu bar. The old 3d board has survived into this iteration because it was fetching and good. Moreover, Chessbase thought so, too. If anyone would like to see these settings I could bother to post them here if anyone asks. I have submitted board views of this game, featured beneath the product image.)
Okay, so for $8.00 new, who can complain about what this program delivers? It gives the purchaser nearly a million games in the database; an openings book that is just about endless; professional-grade notation and annotation options (including animated displays: arrows and whatnot which play out on 2D and 3D boards); beautiful, clean (esp. on the 2D "metal" setting), and deeply customizable 2D and 3D boards; exquisite 3D board adjustment capabilities (esp. on the glass board--fantastic); the ability to load different resident chess engines (or import others); the option to run game analyses on any game--yours or others; training and sparring modes; differing analytical perspectives; the ability to play against a computer opponent of almost any strength or style--and more.
And, w/ Fritz configured optimally and playing at full strength, it plays somewhere around an ELO of 2700, or better. Who besides GK can beat this thing? Let's face it: there are few, if any, people purchasing chess programs from Amazon who have the slightest prayer of beating Fritz in tournament mode w/o take-backs, transparent analysis, and other assorted methods of technical chicanery offered by the program itself. This could be your first and last chess program, provided you are not seduced by any future eye candy offered by this company.
A couple of final words: do not be dissuaded by the professional interface. Chessbase is merely respecting your intelligence by offering game features and controls that any reasonably sober individual can learn quite easily, given the slightest motivation to do so. As the program generates its game face and works through its thought processes, one gets quite used to the goings on and becomes comfortable with them--indeed, can't live w/o them. If one desires more explanation than that offered in the help guide then just wiki "chess notation" or some such thing. (And no one is taking much of a flyer w/ such a modest exploration of chess parlance. Help w/ program features and content can also be found here: http://www.chessbase.com/support/index.asp) Once one acclimates himself to this program, one will be most unlikely to return to, or experiment w/, the rather silly contrivances of other software.
There is one thing that did bother me, a very, very occasional and notional player (who can drop a game at a whim and leave for great intervals of time--like months or years): the opening bitmap was kind of creepy so I renamed the file (located in the bitmap folder) and substituted a much more lively one of my own. Now the game opens in a more encouraging manner instead of the weird image of the automaton--or whatever that thing is.
If anyone would like to get a leg up on chess without spending much money (hardly any, really, in relation to other programs) while embarking on a truly serious--yet fun and challenging--gaming journey, then, by all means, buy this program.
Finally, I have no affiliation, whatsoever, w/ the publisher or retailer of this software. (They wouldn't want anything to do w/ me, anyway.)
Thanks so much for reading.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition Review

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I hope this review serves to clarify some of the complaints that people have posted regarding Office 2008.
Preface:
After being disappointed with Leopard 10.5 -which I also reviewed- I kept using Tiger. When finally 10.5.2 arrived I began using it. It fixes many Leopard bugs. According to some websites, at least 130 bugs have been fixed. This is important since many problems with third party software may be related to other software or to the operating system. For example, Apple is aware of problems with its Sync services and Core Image. Also, some bugs have existed for many years and have not been fixed, such as a potential bug when moving data to an external device.
Keeping these issues in mind I did a completely clean install of Leopard 10.5.2 in a brand new hard drive.
I installed Office 2008 as well as the available upgrade to 12.0.1.
First Impressions:
Some useful features have been added, such as Elements Gallery, which may be a time saver for many people. Some features have been removed, such as VBA, and this may be a deal-breaker for many people.
I'm keeping Office 2004 in a separate partition in order to use previous versions of Word and Excel.
At the same time, I can still use the new versions when I don't need the VBA features.
Lack of VBA support was announced well over a year ago, so this came as no surprise.
Starting up:
Each program took approximately 10 seconds to launch. Office seems to have a peculiar way of handling fonts, though, and launch times can be greatly effected. After installing another program that installed more fonts, and installing Extensis Fusion to manage my fonts, launch times for Office programs was approximately 150 (one hundred and fifty) seconds, instead of the original 10 (ten) seconds.
Now it takes about a minute to launch these programs. In all fairness, the slow down is partly caused by third party software.
Overall (and very brief) impressions:
PowerPoint works with presentations that used to crash my 2004 version. The 2004 version was practically unusable for me. This was a welcome upgrade.
Excel works fine and the Elements Gallery is a good addition. It lost VBA support and the Abalysys Toolpack. I kept the 2004 version as well.
Word seems to be a solid upgrade. Some third party templates do not work with 2008, so I kept Word 2004.
Entourage works very well. I had to re-select the folders that I had set up for my rules, and re-apply categories to my folders. Syncing with Address Book always adds many duplicate contacts. Fortunately there are scripts to deal with this inconvenience. Hyperlinks still require a workaround, as mentioned by another reviewer. I would not rate Office with 1-star solely based on that issue.
Expression Media used to be called iView MediaPro, iView Multimedia, and iView many years ago. It used to be a $25 shareware program when I first used it. Eventually it became quite expensive so I never upgraded until I received this version. So far I'm happy with it. It has worked fine for cataloging thousands of fonts and pictures, and I'm entitled to a free upgrade when version 2 comes out.
Price:
There are free Office alternatives, as well as iWork. I( still prefer Microsoft Office for the most part. The only exception may be Keynote 4.
Microsoft offered a substantial discount under the names of The Technology Guarantee Program and the Super Suite Deal. Additionally, for one day they offered a $[...] rebate. So users could get the Mac Special Media Edition for approximately $[...]-$[...] with these offers.
Had it not been for the offer, I would have stayed with Office 2004. I've used Office 2008 for a few days, every day, and so far have encountered no problems.
Overall I'm satisfied with the upgrade. Support has been great, both by Microsoft and the MVP people. Search their forums and you'll find a lot of useful advise.

BUYER BEWARE ****SYSTEM BUILDER**** INSTALLATION DISK ONLY (Not for typical end user installation)
This should specify boldly in product details that this is a SYSTEM BUILDER PACK ONLY....... Do not buy this if you are planning to just install on a system that you purchased or a pre built system. I contacted customer service and they were not aware of it so I contacted Microsoft and Microsoft stated "return the disc to the company, you can not use it unless you are a system builder". Waited the shipping time and everything for this to install it on a family members machine and now we are stuck waiting again.
Amazon customer service was on the ball in terms of trying their best to get this resolved. They have managed to get me set up for an expedited refund and an expedited solution. I am crossing my fingers that this time it is what I needed.

Do not purchase this software if you are a home user on Windows 7 home edition.
This software ONLY works on Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 7 Enterprise editions.
I've had a trouble ticket open with the Nova Development company on this issue for three weeks with no resolution on how to get it to work with Windows 7 home edition.
It was escalated to the developer's department and has had no progress for over a week.

Totally a rip-off. It's actually the same as "High Achiever Biology", don't know why they can change the name and sell it like this is another product.
Every chapter has only about 10 simple questions - you can easily find more and better questions by google.
Generally speaking, education software is not helpful. It looks like they were created by IT guys, the content on that subject is usually not good. Ask school teacher to recommend a good book in that subject and it will be much better.

This is another great game in their Nancy Drew series.
Full of snooping, intrigue, laughter, beauty, mystery, danger, enjoyable characters and puzzles.
This game REALLY gets you thinking (and not to the point that you get a headache either).

SoundSoap 2 Review

SoundSoap 2

Holy cow. I've used other filters to clean music, and for this price, I expected a "decent" job. SoundSoap 2 delivered awesome results with the most simple operation--the Learn Noise button. I'm a multi-track artist and had transferred old "open-reel" recordings to minidisc and then CD, in order to archive them. I was not happy with the hiss from older recordings when converting to MP3s. SoundSoap brought these recordings back to life-virtually eliminating the hiss and noise! It even made them "sparkle." And the less I messed with the settings, the better it came out. Downside is that it can't directly save MP3s, but no biggie--use Audacity (free on the Web) or iTunes to then convert your files. Nice job, Bias!

Whether you're shooting videos, building websites, creating presentations, or making music, you probably care about your audio. Now, with BIAS SoundSoap 2 there's an easy-to use tool that will make your work sound better than ever. BIAS SoundSoap 2 scrubs audio squeaky clean - dramatically reducing tape hiss, buzzing and hum, rumble, and most other types of background noise. Making a road movie? Let SoundSoap 2 wipe away tire noise. Burning CDs from your old cassette collection? Don't forget the SoundSoap 2. A perfect narration, except for that annoying air conditioner? SoundSoap it! Best of all - while BIAS SoundSoap 2 uses incredibly advanced technology to do its magic - you don't need to be an audio expert. Just click the one-step "Learn Noise" button, and watch SoundSoap 2 automatically clean your audio! Or fine-tune SoundSoap 2's intuitive controls for even more professional results - in just seconds. SoundSoap 2 works standalone - or as a plug-in for most VST or DirectX host programs. So when your sound could use some serious sanitizing, or even just a little freshening up, nothing does the job more easily, more effectively, or more quickly than BIAS SoundSoap 2.

HALO 2 Review

HALO 2

I love the Halo series and have been a big fan since the original came out on Xbox. However, after playing through the campaign I encountered performance issues and it really takes the fun out of the game. Now some people will probably think, "well your computer sucks too much and can't run the game that's why you have performance issues." I assure you my pc doesn't suck and was in fact built for gaming. A computer that can run games like GTA IV and Crysis at very high settings should be able to run this older game with outdated graphics, but as it turns out lots of people are having issues. It seems more powerful computers run this game at high frames and that causes mouse lag/stuttering. As of right now I haven't found a fix for it. Some people claim that enabling vsync in the nvidia or ati control panel will fix it, but I can't confirm. Halo 2 is without a doubt amazing, but definitely meant for consoles.

JEWEL LABYRINTH Review

JEWEL LABYRINTH
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great puzzle game that I have spent hours and hours playing. I can not give an opinion on the Amazon vendor that sells it as I bought it at the same time as several other games from a different vendor. I had a very hard time getting the idea of the puzzles when I first played and could not find much information online. That is what prompted me to write a review as I almost gave up on it but am so glad I didn't.
There are 290 puzzles in "relaxed mode" that are plenty hard for me. I am now at the 196th puzzle and have skipped 6 that I can't figure out. There were more than a dozen others that I couldn't figure out initially but I skipped them and went back to them later and got them. (Right now I am stuck on 144,146,153,176,188 and 191). There are 50 levels in classic mode and I have done the first 12 of those. I have not tried Challenge mode or Diabolical mode and don't expect to be able to do them anyway. However the game is well worth the 290 puzzles in the relaxed mode and I may figure out a few in the other modes. I find it very addicting because you know there is a solution and so you keep trying to think of new approaches.
As the other reviewer said, there are only basic instructions and there is no tutorial. It would be very helpful to see one screen played before trying it yourself. I will try to explain the game. You are a little person in the puzzle and there are one or more jewels (usually several) within various different screen designs with walls. There are designated patches within the design where you are to push the jewels (that solves the puzzle). The problem is that you can only push individual jewels in different directions, you can not pull them toward you, and can not push two at the same time. At first it does not seem possible to get the jewels in the right location by only pushing. You have to be careful to not push a jewel into a corner and sometimes not even against a wall. I have often been able to get all the jewels in place except one and usually have to start over. You can "undo" a move (or many moves), which is very helpful, and you are suppose to be able to save a partially played game but that didn't work for me. The game disk says Windows 98, ME, an XP, but I am playing it successfully on Windows Vista.
If you like puzzle games I think you would like this one. You have no time limit and can skip ahead to the next puzzle if you really get stuck. I think it is probably good brain exercise and I am amazed how many different puzzle configurations are in the game. There are no solutions included, but probably that is good as I might give up too easily.

Corel Painter 12 Upgrade Review

Corel Painter 12 Upgrade
Average Reviews:

I've been using Painter since it was sold in a paint can. This program does what others only attempt. I frequently use Photoshop, and other graphics programs, but painter stands alone. My only beef is the occasional crash, I can't remember ever having a crash in Photoshop, but painter does maybe once a week... I couldn't see giving it 5 stars with the crashing. But still this program does some pretty cool stuff.
I also want to mention the new watercolor brushes. I use to do water color with brush and paint. Painter 12 has revamped their watercolor brushes, on previous releases I haven't bothered with them because they never seemed to work realistically. However in Painter 12, It's looking very realistic. The "light Fringe Real Watercolor" Brush lays down color great. It has a "drying" effect that pushes pigment to the edges and also into the deep spots on the texture of the paper. Very cool! You have to wait a moment to allow the strokes to dry, but in the old days I worked with a hair dryer, and had to wait a couple minuets to dry areas, so waiting 10 seconds isn't really that big of deal (it would be nice if it was instantaneous though).
Another great feature is cloning now puts the source picture into the project picture file, so if you like to work on a piece on multiple sessions, you wont have to go hunt down the source file again.
All in all, a great program. some real nice refinements on this release. But please Corel stabilize this program. The price is a premium, the program should be able to stand without stumbling all the time.

AVG 2011 PC Tuneup 3-User Review

AVG 2011 PC Tuneup 3-User
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wish I would have seen Amazon's offering of this program instead of buying it directly from the developer website. The Amazon software is good for 3 users, whereas the developer's software license charges the same amount for only a single computer.
That being said, this is one of the best PC maintenance programs I've ever used. You don't have to know what you're doing, just ask it to scan for errors, hit the button that tells it to fix them (or for you advanced users, select only the errors you'd like to fix). It will scan for all kinds of errors: disk errors, registry errors, missing software, shortcut problems. There is also a more detailed registry repair program on another tab of the software. It seems to catch more than the "general" fix-it component does. There is also another component that analyzes your internet connection and tweaks your connection settings to optimize your speed. The result of all this, for my PC, was a faster bootup time, faster internet access, and much faster browser page loading.
Like all new laptop owners, the first thing I did after buying it a couple of months ago was to get rid of alot of the "junky" software that I knew I would never need. Unfortunately, even using the add/remove programs application of Windows 7, small pieces of these programs get left behind. The AVG program was able to clean out all of these residual pieces and restore my computer to out-of-the-box functionality.
I have been using this program for about 6 weeks and have yet to experience any problems with software due to the cleanups I have run with AVG PC Tuneup. If you're interested in trying this program out but don't want to commit to the $$ just yet, the developer website has a fully-functional download that will clean up your computer one time, free of charge. After that they want $$. Fair warning, though, if you do this you will probably be chomping at the bit to pay for the software for unlimited use. It keeps your computer functioning like it was brand new. I'd recommend returning to Amazon get the paid version, however, I think it's a better deal if you want to install this on more than one computer.
