(More customer reviews)I purchased this product needing to work on a personal legal (nonbusiness) matter, so the noncommercial license was fine for my "home" use. Good thing I checked with Corel after buying it and seeing the "Home Edition" captions not only on the total suite packaging but underneath the "WordPerfect" and "Quattro Pro" components (inside front box folding cover with velcro). Corel ultimately confirmed to me that "certain components that are designed for the business customer, such as Legal Tools, MetaData Removal, Document Compare, Quickfinder to name a few are not included in the Home Edition version." Corel needs to make this clearer in their marketing of the "Home Edition." I focused on the word processing application, but the Quattro Pro application is also captioned as "Home Edition" so it may be missing some features available in the Quattro Pro included in other Suite versions (Standard, Pro, Student/Teacher, etc.). The Home Edition may still be suitable for some users, but I'm a strong believer in "full disclosure." WordPerfect itself is a great program. Try setting point sizes with decimals in Word -- you can't. Try changing the size of the font in legal pleadings in Word -- there's no direct control of it (the Microsoft site instructs you to change margins and number of lines per page to attempt to get Word to adjust the font size) [but remember, you need any WordPerfect version other than Home Edition to get Legal Tools].

(More customer reviews)I have been using this for about a year now. I find it very useful. I have solved many of the problems I was having. I have upgraded the software to 5 stars. The software can do many things that MS office can but for a fraction of the price. The only drawback is that this software is not fully compatible with Microsoft office files, this is not 100% correct, as I have had to use the machines with Microsoft Excel at work in order to work with some of the files generated by my job in Excel 2003, these files are required to do my job, so there was a huge disappointment there, as I thought I could do this work at home if I purchased this software. Furthermore, the presentations created in this software are not readable by Powerpoint, as previously thought. So, there are some inconsistencies with the description and the software. I also use Open Office a free software, and find that Open office can do more than this software in terms of compatibility with MS Office. If you like Wordperfect, and have used it through the years, you will love this, if not, then you may not like it at all. I personally have been a Wordperfect user since the early to mid 70's with the blue screen dos version. Anyone remember that one? OK, I am old, and certainly dating myself here. But, Wordperfect is solid software and always has been.

WordPerfect Office X3 Professional Review

(More customer reviews)I recently loaded the one month demo version of Corel WordPerfect Office X3. The main changes appear to be improved compatibility with other software. In addition, Corel changed the skin to make it look more like XP, added a Yahoo toolbar, and for those who need it, the WordCount feature is on the application bar at the bottom of the WordPerfect window. This new version appears to be very stable. My main complaint about the suite is that Corel after WordPerfect 10, Corel took out Quick View Plus, a very useful piece of software which would let you look at just about anything.
I don't have much use for anything in the suite except WordPerfect. I've been using WordPerfect since before Windows, when it had a blue screen, displayed ASCII characters in Courier font (there were no fonts except Courier), and laser printers cost a small fortune. I work for a number of attorneys -- WordPerfect is the software of choice for wordprocessing in most offices I've worked in because, in my opinion, it is the better product for the job. It may also be because WordPerfect has been around for so long that everyone just migrated without changing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
When WordPerfect came out, it took over the market. (It was far superior to the software then available, and remains one of the best.) When MicroSoft came out with Word, I had the feeling they did everything they could to make it different from WordPerfect just to use their power in the industry to take over the wordprocessing market, just like MicroSoft did with every other good software idea to come along. (e.g., Mozilla/Netscape, Norton Utilities.) I hate Microsoft's stupid animated paperclip -- it makes me feel like a 7 year old. "It looks like your writing a letter ..." Go away! It was amusing to watch it roll itself up and spit itself through some imaginary pinch rollers when you print a document. But only once. I want to tell MicroSoft to wrap that annoying the paperclip around their cable modems!! I'm an adult!
I have two versions of Word and WordPerfect 5, 7, 8, 10, 12 and now X3. I use the MicroSoft product only when absolutely necessary -- usually because someone else sends me a document in that format. If possible, I will use WordPerfect and save it as a Word document using the "SAVE AS" feature on the "file" pull down menu.
In my experience, Word does one thing better than WordPerfect - it works better (although not perfectly) with WEB pages. It would be nice if WordPerfect went to the Web and got the pictures and had the resulting document look like the web page being pasted in. HEAR THAT COREL!?! However, I don't often copy entire web pages into my documents. (In a perfect world ...)
The reason I like WordPerfect so much is that it types more like a typewriter. You can set up and use styles if you want, but you can also just hit the tab button to indent the first line of a paragraph. If you want to change the margins for the entire document, you simply change the margins. The rest of the document follows the change. You don't have to change each paragraph.
In addition, you can get to the formatting codes. Hit Alt-F3 and the screen splits in half and displays all of the format codes -- bold, underline, tabs, indent codes, line spacing, column on and off, etc. Then you know exactly what you have done and fix and format it easily. This ability has proven useful on several occasions when clients, who insist on using Word for legal documents, cannot cajole Word to put their unruly documents into the format they want. (This is particularly true when using OCR with scanned or faxed documents.) By opening the Word document in WordPerfect, I have been able to use "Alt-F3" to identify the errant codes and quickly repair them. WordPerfect can then save the document in Word/RTF format with the problems fixed. This is particularly useful when combined with the global search and replace. For example, you can search and replace all [paragraph style] and end up with a manageable document.
Working with columns is also easier. You turn on columns and tell it how many colums you want, set the width of each, and the space between them, and away you go. You have four types of columns to work with -- newspaper, balanced newspaper, parallel and parallel with block protect. I've tried the other software, and if you change text or printers, you can never get the columns to line up the way you want it. With Word, each colum change or page change seems to introduce a whole new set of control codes, and a complete set of formatting, and you can never get it back the way you want it. I once tried to scan in a list of names and addresses which were in two or three columns into Word. Each name and address was placed in its own text box. I could never work with it.
Another very important feature is the ability to view a document from the "open document" screen without having to actually open up the document. This way, if you are searching for a specific document or a document containing certain specific information or "language" you need, you don't have to serially open a document, close it, open another document, and so on until you find the one you want. This is particularly powerful when combined with the "find document" feature on the "open document" screen. Using the find button opens a screen which is similar to the windows "search" screen. You can type in a series of words, and WordPerfect will search all files on the hard drive or in the folder/subfolders in which you are working for all documents containing your target search terms. You can then scroll through and look at each document to quickly determine their contents. From the "find" screen, you can access the "quickfinder" program which pre-scans folders on the computer so that searching for documents is nearly instantaneous. Just tonight I needed to find a "Declaration re Ex Parte Notice" to use as a template from amoung thousands of documents. The entire search took perhaps half a minute.
The most prominent change between WP 10 and 12/X3 is the workspace manager which allows you to switch between legal mode, original (classic) WordPerfect 5.1 mode (with the blue screen), legal mode, standard WordPerfect for Windows mode and Word mode. They have also included and upgraded the ability to publish to Adobe PDF, HTML, and RTF/Word formats.
This is full featured software, and does everything I need. It handles tables, tables of content, tables of authorities, column sorts -- everything I need in a law office. Graphics can be dropped in with a click of the mouse. I'm considered to be almost an expert, and there is a lot I don't know!
One of the great advantages of WordPerfect is that the files are much smaller than Word documents. This means you can transport them on floppy drives.
As a final thought, Word works very well for short documents such as business letters. If you do anything over several pages, you are much better off with WordPerfect.
Take time to get to know the software and you'll be glad you purchased it.

(More customer reviews)If you look at my review history, you may note that I've given very few five-star reviews. I save five stars for outstanding products. I believe Wordperfect X3 is best described as outstanding.
A long time ago, I used Word Perfect. However, my earlier jobs required I use MS Word, so I did my best to become a Word guru. I believe I accomplished that short of creating custom macros. As a law clerk, I started a new job where WordPerfect was the standard.
So, last year I bought WordPerfect 12. At first it was difficult, but I bought a book that helped me fill in the blanks. With the ability to customize keyboards and the fact that WordPerfect gives the author a great degree of control (especially with show-codes), I was soon able to become a WordPerfect guru. I remembered all the things I used to love about WordPerfect. Like any lover, I also learned to ignore some of the blimishes of WordPerfect. (One of those blemishes is the behavior of pushing a change from that point of the document forward, which, once you get accustomed to it, is really a nice feature.) Wordperfect and PDFs are the two accepted file formats for electronic submission to Federal courts.
There were two complaints I found at work among Word devotees: 1) the ability to export to PDF but not import and 2) the inability to cut from a Word document into a WordPerfect document without creating all the formatting litter Word likes to use.
1. We occasionally receive PDFs that we would have to retype to be able to make edits. With the ability to import PDFs (that is, those that were authored and exported into PDF, not documents scanned into PDF), we were now able to edit those PDFs. This was a real time saver. Since PDF is the de facto universal standard amongst all platforms (Windows, Mac, Unix), this was a great improvement.
2. Formatting litter is a real pain to deal with. I never could get a MS Word document to just import into WordPerfect without headaches in trying to fix the formatting. My solution was to copy the portion out of MS Word, paste into a text file, copy again and then paste into WordPerfect. My complaint was I could not just straight paste into WordPerfect. Well, Corel heard my cry and provided the ability to copy just the text. The lone MS Word holdout in my office capitulated with that. He has no more to complain about.
Another great thing about WordPerfect is the fact that the file format for its documents has not changed in years (I heard a WP rep say no change since 1995). Why should it? Everything you could want to do in a document (perhaps barring professional typesetting) can be done in WordPerfect. There's no need to create a new format when the one you have just works.
This product does exactly what those who have come to love WP expect it to do. I think Corel has done a good job of resolving my own personal quibbles with WP.
So, if you're looking for a solid performer that seeks to beat competition by improving itself, WPX3 is representative of what you're looking for.

Corel WordPerfect Office 12 Standard Review

(More customer reviews)Having now had WordPerfect 12 installed for some time, I can say that Corel has done well in their target area of improving compatibility with MS Office. There really isn't much else new about this version, but improving WP's ability to co-exist with MS Office may be what is needed to keep this once-great suite going.
Why consider WP12 if you're looking for an alternative to MS Office? Put simply, StarOffice/OpenOffice just isn't ready yet. Every part of the WordPerfect suite is more polished, more powerful and more flexible than the equivalent component in SO/OOo. Of course WP12 has Reveal Codes, which neither SO/OOo nor MS Office has, but even in features that they have in common, like Publish-to-PDF, WP's version is more professional than the SO/OOo equivalent.
QuattroPro sometimes gets a bad rap, but it is a very powerful spreadsheet, with its own Pivot Tables (the equivalent of Excel's CrossTabs), and it offers 1 million rows and 18,000 columns, far more than ANY of its competitors.
Paradox is the sort of database app that makes its MS Office "equivalent" look like a child's toy, if you are prepared for the steeper learning curve.
Of course the heart of the suite is the incomparable WordPerfect itself, and version 12 is not an embarrassment to its predecessors. Even though the only major improvements have been to compatibility with MS Office (significantly better in WP, QP and Presentations), there have been some other useful bug fixes and refinements.
The really exciting thing about this release is the evidence that Corel (now owned by Vector, and in a much healthier financial situation than it has been for years) has renewed its commitment to the suite, and is being realistic about what is needed to protect WP's niche in the market. Planning for version 13 is apparently already under way, as is a trial of a version for Linux, so WordPerfect is definitely here to stay for the foreseeable future.
Having used both OpenOffice and StarOffice for over a year now, I can honestly say that, if you are looking for an enterprise-quality, professional business suite alternative to MS Office, WP12 is a much better choice. The quality difference is especially noticeable in the respective spreadsheet applications, with QuattroPro being several orders of magnitude more powerful and useful than Calc.
In summary, if, for any reason, you want an alternative to MS Office, WP12 is it. Sure, it's not free, but the competitive pricing structure for upgrades make it a very economical choice, and the quality of the product is such that the cost is money VERY well spent. WORDPERFECT LIVES!

(More customer reviews)Many marvel at the longevity of WordPerfect but the truth is, it was always ahead of its time. Having begun my word processing life with the classic "blue screen" of WordPerfect 5.1, it quickly outpaced the competition.
When Microsoft Word came on the scene however, WordPerfect began to suffer. It was true that Word 97 was actually easier to use than its WordPerfect counterpart. Many concluded that WordPerfect was on its way out.
So how did it manage to hang on? Lawyers. While it may seem that the entire world was using Microsoft Word, the vast majority of law firms used WordPerfect - all the legal secretaries were trained using WordPerfect and the legal profession is allergic to change.
WordPerfect began to cater to the legal user - with the feature which automatically generates a table of contents, table of cases and table of authorities. WordPerfect was also there when the United States District Courts began mandating electronic filing in pdf format. It was WordPerfect (and not Word) which first implemented the feature which allowed the user to publish documents to pdf format (without the need of a scanner or Adobe Acrobat).
Still, there was resistance to WordPerfect because, for many, Word was easier to use. WordPerfect X3 changed all that. X3 went so far as to allow the user to configure X3 to behave EXACTLY like Word.
Which brings us to X4. While the folks at Microsoft have taken the regrettable step in Office 2007 to switch to the .docx document format, WordPerfect X4 still fosters interoperability - again behaving like Word and even converting .docx documents.
Why is .docx so regrettable? Most people do not pay much attention to how they save a document. In Office 2007, Microsoft has now changed its standard from .doc to docx. The positive (I guess) is that a .docx file takes up less space on the hard drive. The negative (the big negative) is that .docx is not backwards compatible - meaning, someone using Office 2003 cannot open a .docx file - only users to Office 2007 or other consciously interoperable programs (Like WordPerfect X4).
And unlike the obtuse approach Microsoft has taken to .docx a WordPerfect document created in X4 can be opened in X4, in X3, and in WordPerfect versions dating all the way back to WordPerfect 6.
One of the most incredible features X4 adds is built-in advanced pdf capabilities. Now, you can actually open pdf documents right in WordPerfect. In addition, it has OCR feature which will actually convert to text pdf documents which were scanned. Again, for the legal community, this is an invaluable tool.
Why should X4 cross over intothe mainstream? Frankly, because it is better than Word. It is easier to use. It is exceedingly interoperable. In short, it does everything Microsoft Office does - only better.

WordPerfect Office 11 Review

(More customer reviews)I own both Wordperfect 9 and 11 and find that 9 is superior. Apparently in Wordperfect 11, Corel revamped the way the software interfaces with printers so all of the features of my printer (a new model Hewlet Packard Laserjet) do not work without going through several steps in the page setup. Further, Wordperfect 11 freezes up if one uses the latest printer drivers and only works with older versions of drivers. Plus, I bought the product with the understanding that it automatically converts batches of old wordperfect files. I have many documents in wordperfect 4.2 and 5.1. However, Wordperfect 11 does not convert batches of old files in 4.2 and 5.1. Other than above, the software is fine but you may as well stick to version 9 which is fabulous.

(More customer reviews)It is hard to find this classic program anymore. Too bad, because it is the perfect program for almost any home or office. Although overshadowed by Word/Excel, I have used WordPerfect for many years and I think it is the better program in terms of ease of use and versatility. This program is comprehensive and includes all the utilities anyone could ask for in a package that is easy to use. Too bad it's disappearing from the market. It's a wonderful program. I think the earlier versions are better than the later (I liked WP7 best because of its great graphics, and 7 and 8 are better than 10, as they keep trying to get more complex and lose the simplicity that appeals to many people like me who don't need every conceivable tool in the world).

However the "Home and Student" version is sold without any notice that it does not include all the features that are advertised. True there is a Acrobat file hidden at the WP website that compares the versions but if you don't happen to see that you will find that you have bought a program that will NOT open .pdf files, will not save .pdf files, does not save in the latest Word format. There are probably other "missing" features as well. It doesn't say that anywhere on the box and in fact as you install the program you are told about all the features the new program has- which IN FACT it does not have! For those who purchase the program with the new features in mind you can call the company about it and they will tell you to get lost. This is unworthy of the reputation Word perfect has for those like me who have used the program since its earliest DOS incarnations.

Corel Family Pack 2009 Review

As a 20 year wordperfect (WP) user who has purchased previous versions of Word Perfect, I am really disapointed by the simplest of things. After running a computer with Win98SE and Word Perfect 6 and then going to a newer OS Win2000 and getting a Family pack that included Word Perfect 11. Now I am running Vista 64 and I find my previous versions of Word perfect can not be upgraded to run with Vista.
Fine I ain't so cheap that I can not buy a few new software products for my new computer.... so I buy the latest Family Pack with Word Perfect X4, and by Corels own product description, I expected it to be at least as functonal as the old WP11. But Corel is killing me, just to force users to buy a premium X4 version, this one does not come with a PDF converter, which all my old WP versions have. I can not throw away my old computer because I have to load my WP X4 files onto WP11 which will not run on my new computer. WP11 changes the format of the file, the number of sentences per page, etc... which throws off the formatting and alignment of my pictures and articles. So I have to realign everything and convert it using WP11 to make my final PDF file. It is almost less bother to do everything on the old computer as any editing would then need to be done on the old computer also. Thanks Corel, my gift to you is this loving review. The new program runs faster on the new computer but since I farm out my publishing, editing, and product, I need the PDF capability. Corel has made the program worthless to me by one stupid, greedy, basic function omission.
In the past, it has not been important to me that my friends and associates, and publisher did not use WP as I could easily generate a PDF to share. In a world full of software users provided for mainly by Gates Inc, Corel should know that if they disable their users ability to share files with most of the world their product is basically useless.
I would appreciate if anyone knows of a way short of buying Adobe Acrobat or the Word Perfect upgrade that will convert these files to PDF without messing up the format.
I can not find any low cost PDF converter that both works with Word Perfect X4 and that does not put an advertising logo on each page. I would not be half so mad about this if Corel would at least have let a buyer know ahead of time that they had removed the PDF converter from their low end X4 version. The dark side is so strong and calling, I am about ready to throw in the towel and use the free MS Word that is already on the new computer.
I guess if you need a word processor, without the ability to share files this program will be "perfect" for you.

I came to the conclusion long ago that Wordperfect when, it is mastered, is a far more powerful office suite than MS Word. The releases of Word 2007 and Wordperfect X5 have done nothing to change my opinion. Perhaps Word is a little more intuitive for a new user but there is SO MUCH MORE that Word Perfect can do, not the least of which is open, modify and save PDF formats. Corel has made it's office suite even "suiter" with the inclusion of Paperport and Thunderbird. I love paperport and I am currently using it to go paperless with all my home financial records. Wordperfect X5 has a list of file formats it can import that beats any other Office product on the market. I could write an essay on this product, but if you are looking for a cheaper and at the same time better alternative to Microsoft Word 2007, try this office suite and you will be glad you did.

(More customer reviews)As a longtime PC user of WP, it's been frustrating to keep it at home; my work uses Microsoft. My PC had only WP installed, while my work ones have only Microsoft. This new version allows compatibility, a feature my old WP lacked. It also integrates Sharepoint and Thunderbird e-mail functions that Microsoft favors; it works with Microsoft Word 2007 also to convert files. (I am not sure how it works with Vista, as I do not have that program, but it does get along with Windows 7 and XP-- but I suspect not lower-level Microsoft versions if these still lurk on your PC.) It can be used on up to three PCs; I assume it can be deactivated from one and put on another if necessary?
The WP update does not look much different than Microsoft Word. A glance at it running looks about the same as its competitor. Yet, I have always favored my older WP for its simpler "feel," and its lack of forcing you into limits that a Microsoft word processor or program seems to do for me. I rely on a computer more for basic functions, so some of those in either WP or Microsoft might elude my awareness. Still, I like wide varieties of fonts (900 True Type, many non-Western), clip art, and the Pocket Oxford Dictionary (on a separate disk here).
The tutorial disk shows you the basics; PDF features for creating compatibly viewed files promise wide application, as does Quatro spreadsheet and editing of presentation slides (Power Point compatible, but somehow these files seem to offer wider variety than PP for options). Similarly, the Lightning feature, although not one I'd personally need, may be welcome for those wanting to work across programs that are Microsoft-based while extending the flexibility that WP provides. A
I welcome competition for Microsoft. I always feel forced into it at work and favor the choices in the marketplace. So, I am happy I can now fit my home documents into my work ones at last. Familiarity should show some more discoveries, and I may enter these into an updated review. Based on a first encounter with the new version of WP, as before I tend to find WP less restrictive and more welcoming than its ubiquitous rival.
