Workshare Professional 5.0 (1-Year Term) Review

Workshare Professional 5.0 (1-Year Term)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started using Workshare Pro last year because the other attorneys working on a transaction were using it and I could not consistently open their redlines without it. I am writing this review because Workshare sent me an email with a link to this site specifically asking for reviews.
I have always found the MS WORD compare function to be adequate for my purposes and never had a problem with clients or lawyers being able to open the redlines.
Workshare Pro does a fair job of tracking changes. It hangs up my computer about once a week and freezes on documents with MS WORD table of contents or index of terms codes embedded. I have a Dell Latitude 620 with Windows XP and primarily Windows programs. I use on the same computer the HOTDOCS document assembly program and LaCerte Tax Programs. They may be incompatible with Workshare.
The file names that Workshare generates are fairly long and they also seem to be a problem for my system.

NitroPDF Professional Review

I just got this. First screen that comes up notifies you that, due to licensing problems, you can't download the version on your CD anymore--you have to download a newer version from a web site. Lord knows why they're selling something you can't use--especially since they know you can't use it, given the banner that pops up telling you so!
I downloaded the newer version--but it doesn't work well. I get loads of runtime errors and the program shuts down. For example, I can't open an existing PDF--the program crashes. Neither can I go to the "secure" part of the menu without a crash.
Pretty pathetic and extremely disappointing. Don't buy it.

ProVenture Personal Legal Forms Review

ProVenture Personal Legal Forms
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The other reviewer is right about the help file. It's not included for some reason but it's fairly easy to use. If you have just the basic computer knowledge, you can find your way around. I bought mine back in 1999 after I bought my windows 98 second edition but it has been sitting around and this is the first time I ever use it. I runs fine on windows xp service pack 2. You do need to install it, not like some other programs that runs off the cd and needs microsoft words to open. Make sure you restart the computer after installation and before using otherwise it might freeze. In other words, it's a sufficient program that runs by itself and you only need a printer. Any printer will work but I recommend laser jet because ink jet tends to smudge or smear.
The numbers of forms are very limited but it's categorized in different types as follow.
Sales of Purchase of Goods: agreement of sale of goods, limited warranty, notice to buyer- cancellation for breach, notice of cancellation of order, notice of past due account- first, notice of past due account- second, notice of past due account- last, notice of rejection of non-conforming goods, purchase order terms, sale of goods on consignment
Wills, Trusts, & Estates: durable power of attorney, general power of attorney, letter changing beneficiary, living trust agreement, living will, memorial planner and information, notice revocation of power of attorney, pour over will, special power of attorney, will spouse and adult children, will spouse and trusts for children, will spouse no children unequal shares, will adult children only, will no children or unequal shares, will trusts for children
Real Estate: Commercial lease agreement, homeowners' association proxy, landlord demand letter, landlord's consent to consignment, landlord's notice terminating tenancy, landlord's rules and regulations, lien waiver, offer to buy real estate, quitclaim deed, residential house lease agreement, residential real estate sale contract, sportsman's property use agreement, sublease agreement, Tenant's Assignment of Lease Agreement, Tenant's Notice Terminating Tenancy, Termination of Lease Agreement.
Health & Medical: Authorization for Release of Medical Information, Health Care Power of Attorney, Health Care Power of Attorney disclosure, Organ Donation Statement, Revocation of Living Will.
General Contracts: Exhibit, General Release by Individual Claimant, Legal Services agreement- Contingent Fee, Legal Services agreement- Flat Fee, Legal Services agreement- Hourly Rate, notice of contract assignment, receipt.
Finance & Investments: Affidavit of Lost Stock Certificate, Bad Check Notice, Bill of Sale, Bill of Sale - Vehicle, Cancel a Membership or Subscription, Challenge to Adverse Credit Action, Credit Card Dispute Letter, Demand for Money Owed Letter, Equipment Lease Agreement, General Proxy, General Release by Individual Claimant, Guaranty, Investment Club Partnership Agreement, Letter Disputing Credit File, Notice to Bank to Stop Payment of a Check, Notice of Lost Credit Card, Odometer Disclosure Statement, Promissory Note, Release of Contract Claim, Request for Credit Report, Request for Earnings and Benefit Statement, Security Agreement, Settlement Agreement.
Consumer & Family: Change of Address Letter, Child Care Instructions, Complaint Letter - Better Business Bureau, Complaint Letter - Product Manufacturer, Freedom of Information Act Request, Notice Letter to Child's School, Pre-Nuptial Agreement, Property Settlement Agreement, Remove Your Name from Mailing Lists, Remove Your Name from Telemarketing Lists, Shared Residence Agreement, Temporary Guardianship of Minor Child, Transfer to a Minor.
You either click or double click to get to where you want. When you open the form you want, the whole form is mostly filled out. All you do is to put the information that fits your need. The green texts can be explained by double clicking on it. The red texts is the information that you type in like name, addresse, date, etc. When you want to save it, you can click on the floppy disk icon or click file - save. At default, it will name it *.law so you need to remove the asterisk and create you own name. Just remember if you made modifications to the file later and you want to save it as another file, don't click the floppy disk icon because that will overwrite the previous file. Instead, click file - save as and name it something else. I like to do mine in sequence like contract.law, contract1.law, contract2.law, etc. If you want to go back to the form list simply click on the back button on the bottom right tab. If you haven't saved the previous file it will ask you if you want to save it.
This program is very easy to use. It's much easier to use compare to microsoft words or nero burning rom. I have high computer experience so I just use other programs as comparison so other viewers know what I'm talking about. My only gripe is that I counted it only has 89 different forms and letters total. Just look over above to see if the forms has what you need. Just remember it does not have the help file. However, it does have the business law topics that looks like a help file by explaining the law a little more in detail. Just click on file - business law topics or you can click on business law tab in the main menu. There's a table of content and you can click on what topic you want. I think for an average user, the living will, wills, and power of attorney alone is worth more than the cost of the cd many times over. If you don't have a will and you die, chances are the city is going after your properties and assets. Your spouse and children is gonna have to fight probate court and that can drag on for years. Simplify things for your love ones and make it legit.
I'm not sure if there's a newer version of this. It's by MySoftware ProVenture and it's version 1.0. I think MyAttorney might be related to this but I don't have it yet so I can't comment on it. The author warns that this software is for reference only. I you have any doubt you should consult a real attorney if money is not an issue.

Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional Upgrade from Professional Version 6 Review

Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional Upgrade from Professional Version 6
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Don't take my word for it that's a quote from the title of a recent post excoriating this irritating and increasingly bloated product on Slashdot.
Be warned: Adobe has not learned its lesson, and despite the outcry that followed the release of version 6, this latest release of Acrobat continues Adobe's aggressive trend of intruding into your desktop environment, again, as in version 6 without providing an easy way to undo the damage once its done--in fact, it's now nearly impossible. Like earlier releases, this version of Acrobat adds startup macros and new toolbar buttons to your existing applications and adds menu entries to your desktop "right click" menus. Adobe argues that these are conveniences, but they are entirely unnecessary (for most of us "printing" to Adobe PDF achieves the same result, is much more convenient, and a more natural model), and clutter what for most users is either a too-crowded user interface (for those who don't have the knowledge or patience to customize it) or a carefully tuned one (for those who do). Unlike many well-behaved applications that provide obvious ways of avoiding this kind of intrusive and disruptive behavior (e.g. through a simple checkbox option in a settings dialog), Acrobat's "option" for disabling this behavior, once deeply hidden in the setup process,is now almost completely absent. To disable the "Convert to Adobe PDF" button that mysteriously appears in the Outlook mail editor, for example, one has to be sure to choose "this feature will not be available" from the "Microsoft Outlook" option under "Acrobat PDFMaker" under "Create Adobe PDF". Simply deleting the button using Outlook's toolbar customization feature will not work: it comes right back when the editor is next opened. Similar problems arise in Word, Excel, Visio, Project, and Internet Explorer. And there's simply no way to get rid of the never-used "Convert to Adobe PDF" and "Combine in Acrobat..." entries in that appear in the desktop context menus for files (even if one installs none of the Acrobat PDFMaker features).
For the technically inclined wishing to repair some of the damage that Acrobat 7 does, there are complex but largely effective step by step instructions available on the web, but even the authors of these are driven to despair by version 7: ("Adobe has really pushed the boat out with Acrobat 7 and managed to screw Word royally") .
In short, Acrobat will make a mess of your working environment, there's no way to completely fix it, and even the partial fix is a pain (and not well documented). (This may seem a minor issue, but if every application followed Adobe's reckless example, our working environments would start to look like strip malls, crowded with features screaming for our attention to the point where it is hard to find what we need when we need it. One of the great strengths of the personal computer desktop is that users can configure it in ways that suit their needs; no application should interfere with that.)
Experienced Acrobat users will also notice that this version continues another frustrating trend for Acrobat (and most other Adobe applications): it is yet again slower to launch than the previous version. In fact, on my 2 GHz Pentium 4, it takes longer to launch than the entire Visual Studio .NET development environment, and longer than the boot sequence for Windows XP!
There are other minor problems as well (arbitrary rearrangements of menu and tool bar items, etc.) but these two major flaws are more than bad enough. Unless you really need the latest Acrobat features, you should probably avoid this upgrade. And if the "improvements" in this release are any indication of where Adobe plans to go with future releases, it may be time to start looking elsewhere for a tool for digital document management.
Fortunately, there's no reason at all to upgrade. Version 7 offers no usefully new features, so you can (and should) avoid this one (at all costs).

Omnipage 18 Professional Upgrade Review

Omnipage 18 Professional Upgrade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Interface: The new interface presents with some cosmetic changes with little thought given to improved functionality and customization (i.e., in the context of calling this a version upgrade), the new submenu and option Windows are reminiscent of a Windows PE environment.
Scanner Setup and Configuration: My Scanjet N6xx0 that worked properly under OmniPage 17 would no longer function using the same Windows 7 certified scanner driver; I was able to use an alternate driver to test out the software.
Speed and Accuracy: Based on about an hour of testing on my system, I found no accuracy or speed increases between version 17 and 18 using Fax, printed and photocopied materials. Overall, I could not identify any speed and accuracy benefits of version 18 over version 17 based on my home office needs.
Nuance Cloud Connector: Upon opening the Nuance Cloud Connector, I was immediately presented with an unprompted spamware pop-up offer to upgrade to the full version of Nuance Cloud Connector. Features and functionality of the included spamware version of the Nuance Cloud Connector are rudimentary at best and offer little benefits over user configured or open source/free software. The utility was easy to configure but failed to connect to my primary cloud service.
Software Activation: Given the economy and cost of software, on-the-fly license management and the ability to transfer needed software between my two desktop computers and laptop is essential (i.e., as opposed to buying multiple copies of software). Nuance has again failed to include industry-standard on-the-fly license activation and deactivation, and/or an on-line license management equivalent. During installation and removal, the software continues to rely on a silent activation/deactivation scheme with absolutely no user prompting.
Program Bugs and Technical Support: The software installed and activated properly; however, I was presented with the same activation menu each time I started the program. This long-standing cyclic activation bug is nothing new to Nuance products and it is regrettable that Nuance has not remedied this problem. After contacting technical support via the on-line support form regarding the cyclic activation bug, I received a scripted response that was nonsensical in the context of the question that I asked. After several attempts of explaining the problem to a telephone technical support rep, I was given the typical Nuance technical support instructions for removing and reinstalling the software, my activations were reset; I received no assurances that the problem will not happen again. I have requested a refund under the Nuance 30 day money back guarantee but I have not heard back from Nuance at the time of writing this review or two days.
Overall Thoughts and Recommendations: Given that my assessment of Omnipage 18 was based on my individual needs and preferences, and made in comparison to OmniPage 17, other users may find some value in upgrading to or purchasing version 18. In terms of my personal opinions, I am very disappointed that Nuance continues to fail to provide users with an industry-standard activation scheme, and has equally failed to address long-standing bugs with their antiquated activation system. Relative to the new Nuance Cloud Connector, which was the principal reason I chose to purchase version 18, I was extremely disappointed with the functionality of the applet and equally offended with the unsolicited upgrade pop-up offer (i.e., SPAM), appeared from within the program; I would have been fine with an e-mail offer following registration. Relative to technical support, Nuance continues to offer the absolute worst support that I have experienced in the software industry. Overall, there is nothing about this software that I would recommend, and based on my experience, OmniPage 18 is a marked downgrade in comparison to an unimpressive but functional version 17.
Note: This review is based solely on OmniPage 18 and not Amazon or the software vendor.

Dymo File Professional Document Management Software Review

Dymo File Professional Document Management Software
Average Reviews:

I work for a small non-profit that has been moving to scan and pitch as much paper as possible. We use network scanners, and they only scan to one predesignated folder. Before DymoFile I had to scan, return to my computer and find the scanned file, rename it to an appropriate name, and cut and paste it into the folder in which I wanted to store it long term. With DymoFile, I choose a name and location before I ever go to the scanner. If I have several documents, I can assign them names and locations and scan then all as one stack. Dymofile prints a piece of paper with a bar code for each document stack. After the scanning, the softwae monitors the target folder for the scanner and when it sees a bar code, it moves the file to the appropriate folder with the name I gave it. No muss, no fuss. You do end up printing paper that just gets pitched. But you don't have to think about the process. In the past, i would scan files and then get busy with other things, finding the files a couple of days later when I looked in the scan folder. Now everything is taken care of once the scanning is done. The professional version of DymoFile is only for those who do more than 5000 images a month. There is a cheaper Office edition that limits you to 5000 images or less each month. Great Product, Higly recommended.

This is one of the most essential tools in my arsenal. It accurately converts PDFs to Excel spreadsheets, or Word documents - leaving me in complete control to force treatment of parts of the document as graphics.
In converting files to PDFs it is a most efficient converter - Other previously used print to PDF programs would give me files 4 to 10 times as large as this program does. It is a great program.

Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended 9 Upgrade Review

Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended 9 Upgrade
Average Reviews:

Only after ordering and receiving the Acrobat Pro Extended Upgrade did I discover (sticker on outside of box) that it is only an upgrade from previous Acrobat Pro versions. To upgrade from a previous Acrobat Standard version one has to first purchase the Acrobat Pro version upgrade, then purchase the Acrobat Pro Extended upgrade.
Unless I'm missing something, this information is not present on the Amazon site and as far as I can tell was only added to the Adobe Acrobat site recently.
The only reason I purchased the Pro Extended was at the suggestion of Adobe Acrobat technical support to regain some functionality that Adobe removed from Acrobat Standard after version 5. Of course they did not mention that I would have to pay for two upgrades.
Hopefully Amazon will make this clear in their description of this product upgrade, although one would presume that Adobe should have supplied them with this information.

Adobe Acrobat Standard 9 Review

Adobe Acrobat Standard 9
Average Reviews:

Acrobat 8 has never integrated with Office 2007, or worked right with my scanner, so I foolishly bought Acrobat 9 in the hope it would be an improvement. It's not.
It seems Adobe simply focused on jamming more features into an already bloated and buggy application making things even worse. The office 2007 integration *still* does not work--even after spending hours trying the suggested solutions from Adobe. Beware, even for this $300 product, Adobe CHARGES for any phone support beyond basic installation help.
In addition to not working with Office 2007, Acrobat 9 is slow, throws up frequent error messages, and leaves part of itself running even after you shut it down which keeps Windows from shutting down without clicking past an "Acrobat has stopped responding" message. I also had trouble with Adobe's finicky product activation.
Memo to Adobe: More features are useless if the basics don't work reliably. People don't want products that take 20 minutes to install, forever to load, require hours of searching for and trying various support solutions to no avail, throw up frequent error messages, etc.
Someone else needs to come along (Google are you listening?) and derail Adobe's PDF train with a simple, reliable product that's more like Acrobat used to be in the old days (say version 5). For the 3% of the PDF users who actually *need* all the extra obscure publishing features, they can still buy Adobe's buggy bloatware. The rest of us just want reliable basic PDF support that works with the current applications and standards.

Omnipage 18 Review

Omnipage 18
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before getting Omnipage 18, I read reviews of previous versions of the software. Reviewers were very critical of the difficulties in getting started with older versions (17 and earlier). So, I was nervous that the new version would be just as difficult.
I am happy to report that I found Omnipage 18's automated "Workflow" options to be extremely easy to use, and I've now used it to take care of a task that I've been dreading for months: Processing tables of data that I have on printed pages...
I have ten years worth of paper documents that contain a combination of text and numeric data (mostly the latter) stored in tables. I need to do some statistical computations on this data, but I don't have access to the original files. I was beginning to think that my only solution was to manually enter the data into Excel. Well, it turns out that Omnipage 18 has a mode that will automatically import scanned data into an Excel document, putting each scanned page into a separate "sheet" in the document. This is exactly what I needed. So, I used my scanner at work to quickly scan in 30 pages as a pdf, and then opened the document with Omnipage. Conversion was almost instantaneous, and the numeric data itself seems to have been recognized flawlessly! When I began skimming through the data for the first couple imported pages, I was just so relieved to see how perfectly this was imported. Now, I can use Excel to perform the calculations I need. Omnipage 18 has saved me hours of work on this task. I've never used those older versions of Omnipage, but this one has been extremely easy to use. (And, for those concerned, I went with pdf format just because that was easy for me with my work scanner. Omnipage can take data from many other sources, including scanners, cameras, and more.)
One other scenario where Omnipage has proven its value: My wife had several pages of family reunion address data on paper, again stored in tables. I scanned it in and tried to use Google Doc's automatic OCR features by uploading the document online. It did a lousy job, and so the scanned image sat on my computer untouched for a month. Finally, I opened the same document in Omnipage 18, and imported it as a tabular Word document. I was done after just a couple minutes of checking over the few spots where Omnipage had trouble with the recognition.
So, why four stars instead of five? Two reasons:
1) Sparse documentation. The box contained nothing but the disc. The help menu is not very well organized, at least for my needs. In the two examples above, I didn't need the documentation because everything worked so smoothly. But when I tried working with a not-so-easy document (a webcam photo of a recipe from a cookbook), I really needed to read the documentation to figure out how to deal with some of the trickier parts of the scan (tricky because the photo I took was sloppy). I fumbled around for quite a bit before I found what I needed. Within the Help menu, I found "The Text Editor" and "Customizing Zones" sections to be particularly helpful in learning how Omnipage handles converting images to text. I just wish that the information were easier to find.
2) The unnecessary "Nuance Cloud Connector". I guess, in an effort to show that the company is on the "cutting edge" of technology, they have provided an additional piece of software for staying connected to various "clouds" such as Google Storage, Amazon S3, WebDAV, and more. I am already as cloud-connected as I want to be (Dropbox is already meeting my needs), so I didn't appreciate Nuance kind of coercing me into installing this add-on feature that runs every time my computer starts up. It wasn't obvious to me whether I could skip the installation of the Cloud Connector software. So I installed it, confirmed that it was not going to help me in my day-to-day workflow, and then used Windows Control Panel to uninstall it. I'm glad to find that Omnipage 18 seems to run just fine without the Cloud Connector.
All in all, I'm very happy so far with what Omnipage 18 has done for me, and expect it will continue to come in handy!

Roboform Password Manager & Form Filler Review

Roboform Password Manager and Form Filler
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It seems like you have to have passwords for everything these days and more and more often there are increasingly unique requirements for the passwords ... case senstive, number of characters, special characters required vs. not allowed. How all the sites, companies and such expect us mere mortals to remember all these passwords is beyond me. After takign on a new work role and being inundated with literally a dozen or more new requirements for passwords, I decided that I had to find some help. I reviewed a variety of professional and user reviews of different software applications and eventually settled on Roboform and am glad that I did.
I had used FireFox's password manager and liked it but it only worked with Firefox and some of the sites I use had to be used with Internet Explorer. RoboForm works with both. Plus, you can go in and actually see the unencrypted passwords, print out the password, create a profile for completing on-line forms and much more. It was easy to install and set up ... very intuitive. They have a demo that you can run through quickly upon set up which gives you the basic how-to's and from there I was able to do everything I needed. It remembers the passwords and other logon info when you enter it the first time ... and then populates it at the click of a button the next time you're there. It'll also populate forms and such. I like that it only populates these fields when you click the button to tell it to ... as oppose to automatically doing it (since there's times that you don't want it to auto-complete forms and such).
The real test was when my computer started to die and I had to re-install on a new laptop. I figured that I was safe because I could print out my passwords and would just have to re-enter again the first time. But, instead, I was able to copy over the password file to the new computer and pick right up where I was without having to re-enter any passwords.
I give roboform high marks overall ... it's certainly made my password management a lot easier! Highly recommend Roboform.

Be aware that if you make the mistake of buying this edition of this company's software you will be put through a real hassle by some company called Ident-e that will want everything but your grandmother's birth certificate and a note from your teacher to verify that you are actually a student or teacher. Unlike the more straight forward methods used by Microsoft and others they require picture ID's, which can be difficult if your course is online, fee bills, etc. They are also unresponsive, taking 48 hours or more to answer queries. The kicker is that after 30 days they threaten to refuse to activate the software at all and you cannot get a refund. Welcome to Adobe.
I bought this overpriced software because the University of South Alabama convinced my wife, who is attending a grad course, that she needed Acrobat to submit her documents. I know that you can use free programs, like PDF Creator, and alternate software like PDF Factory and numerous other pdf suites that are both cheaper and more flexible than Acrobat. I use those myself but in the interest of my wife's confidence in her system I decided to spend the extra bucks and buy this version, for which she certainly qualifies. I regret that decision and will never again do any business with or recommend any Adobe product to anyone. This is one disgusting and arrogant bunch to deal with.
I am still waiting for the response and serial number for the software I paid them for and will update this as needed.
BTW: They needed no verification to charge my card. Guess they figure that ends their responsibility in this matter.

I used this product just long enough to discover that the Mac version does not support rich content when converting Word .doc or .docx files to PDF. Internal links (cross-references to bookmarks in the same document), for example, are not converted. For that, I was told after several support calls, one needs the Windows version, which is supposed to come with PDFMaker for use in such conversions.
All that was several weeks ago. It took that long, working faithfully with the call center from day to day and from week to week to sort out (1) who I am - I had an older customer ID associated with a purchase made years ago, and it took several calls to figure out the customer ID under which my Acrobat 9 purchase was made; (2) make them realize that I'd uploaded my software destruction agreement as a prerequisite to the license swap that would get me the Windows version; (3) confirm shipment. The Windows version is due to arrive this week. All I can do is hope that I don't have to call back and start over at the beginning.
Adobe makes great products and is uniquely situated in today's ebook marketplace as the purveyor of PDF, the new preferred format for the Kindle DX. They won't have to do much to ride the wave of success built on quality and market positioning made all the more profitable by this new wave of good fortune. There isn't much in this mix to motivate a more efficient customer support organization, and it shows.
The call center people are very sharp and helpful but mired in a disjointed business model. They do the best they can.

Product limits you to 25 attempts, then register, or register at the first attempt. Attempting to register this product is frustrating, the product insists on a pre-determined country, if it is UK, then it searches for the UK internet output/modem, for USA it declines all attemtpts to register, giving an error "no internet connection". After various attempts to register it insists on a phone number. Finally I abondoned my quest, and put the disk to rest....................

I purchased this product and installed it on my PC. It continually sent me through the scanner setup wizard and supposedly let me save the scanner setup after testing it successfully, then when I went to scan something, it didn't recognize the scanner it said worked fine and saved.
Tech support responded after a day or two then, after spending a fair amount of time editing an ini file somewhere so that I could enable error logging, followed by sending the requested files in, hey never responded back. after a little over a week later I got my refund for the software and gave up on it.
Omnipage also trashed my Paperport 12.1 installation and I had to go back and reinstall that also. Now, when I start Paperport sometimes, it wants me to activate it again. I try the automatic activation and that doesn't work. Once the manual reactivation worked but now it doesn't.
I have Omnipage 15 standard and it works well for me, so that's what I'll continue using. Apparently, Omnipage 18 still has some serious bugs to work out in the scanner setup portion of their product.

PaperPort Professional V12.0 Review

(More customer reviews)
How can you rate a program you don't have and apparently have no intention of buying? While their comments reflect my experience with Nuance (Not Much) Support, they were not a review of this software.
Unlike the first two "reviewers" I actually purchased and installed PP12 Pro.
My original title for this post was going to be, "A Giant Step Backwards." In my review of PP11 Pro I summed up by saying I hoped Ver 12 would be better. It isn't.
The first thing you will notice is the new tabbed ribbon interface. Unlike MS and others who have adopted this interface, this one is not too bad. The desktop is nice looking, too. These are about the only things good I have to say about the improvements to the program.
By default, PP saves documents in pdf format, as it has since at least V.9.
First problem: the new PDF Viewer Plus. This is the default viewer when you view a document in PP. Though the "About" screen says copyright 1995-2009 this seems very much like V.1.0 software, as it is very buggy. It, BTW, still uses the old style interface.
Nuance says, "A more extensive annotation set includes notes, text boxes, highlights, straight lines and free-form lines, making it easy to add comments to documents." Well, that's partially true. Most of the annotations were available in previous versions..and they worked.
Most annotations seem to work o.k, such as lines, stamp, sticky notes, etc. The "select text" toolbar button doesn't do anything unless you chose "Select Text" first from the drop-down menu. Then the button will sometimes work. The "Crop" button doesn't work and there is no "crop" choice from the drop-down. There is also a bug that causes the program to close if you chose "text box" from either the drop-down or the button.
O.K. You can change default to "ImageView within PP." Now you have all the features you love in PP...and they work still...mostly. The "Stamp" button says "Prompt for File" when clicked on, but does nothing, and all options on the "Configure" section of the tab remain greyed out.
Nuance claims, "PaperPort Professional 12 delivers a 42% increase in accuracy over the previous version. It even allows you to apply language settings to OCR for improved accuracy in all supported languages." Apparently English is not one of those languages.
The OCR is not improved since 11.2. (I'm not sure why they changed it between 11.0 and 11.2 but that's a whole other rant.) It still does not OCR properly to Excel. Instead of putting Col A in Col A, Col B in Col B, etc, it still insists in putting them all in Col A. Read my review of Ver. 11 Pro for the gory details. It still does not OCR accurately when it is a pdf document.
Over all, IMO, the "improvements" to PaperPort 12 aren't. The pretty new face is nice, but that's not enough of a reason to get the program. PDF Viewer Plus is too buggy to use, especially when there are other more stable programs out there. The OCR engine is still a bust. Save your $99 or $149 (depending on which "Upgrade" option you choose) or your $163.99 and up for the non-upgrade version.
Tho I have a support ticket into Nuance I don't expect much. I availed myself to the 30 day money back guarantee and reverted back to PP11.0, bugs and all.
UPDATE 10/16/09: I (finally) received the following reply to my OCR problem with PP 12:
>>>
Thank you for contacting Nuance Technical Support.

This is regarding the issue that you were encountering with PaperPort.
Sorry for the late reply.
Unfortunately it is a limitation of PaperPort 12 to perform an OCR with no borders or column file when sending it to Excel. We also recreated your issue here on our lab pc and we are also have the same output. But if you do have Omnipage it will help your PaperPort to perform more accurately in OCR-ing your file.

PaperPort enables you to encapsulate all your settings, including color, format and SET corrections, into Scanner Profiles so you get the correct results with the push of one button.

A Better Way to Organize In all the buzz about enterprise-wide document management, the individual desktop has been largely overlooked. But as companies invest in document management solutions for the enterprise, they need to keep in mind that employees spend most of their time working with documents on their individual PCs rather than a network repository. It's easy to take for granted that Microsoft Windows provides all the features needed for handling documents, but that's just not the case. Only PaperPort Professional closes the gap between what Windows offers and the ability to manage scanned paper and PDF documents quickly, easily and effectively on a digital desktop. At the same time, it provides the perfect on-ramp to enterprise-wide document management systems. You simply won't find another PC document management application that can do all that.
The best thing to happen to your PC since Windows PaperPort is designed to work with Microsoft Windows in the most efficient way possible, leveraging what necessary features are already available for a complete desktop document management environment.PaperPort uses the existing folder structure in Windows while allowing you to customize what folders you want to see at any given time.PaperPort also creates searchable PDF files and provides a plug-in for Windows Desktop Search so these files can be indexed and searched. PaperPort is simply the ultimate document desktop for Windows.
Assemble custom PDF documents by dragging and dropping PaperPort Professional features a unique split desktop design that displays individual page thumbnails alongside document thumbnails. Just drag and drop entire documents within another document or selectively copy and paste individual pages from one PDF document to another. Quickly assemble custom PDF documents by combining scans and photos with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. And once your custom PDF document is assembled, you can simply email it to intended recipients. No need for costly printing, copying, faxing or mailing. It's like stacking, stapling and sending real paper--only a whole lot faster, easier and greener.
Safe and secure--compliance is mandatory Because of PaperPort's superior integration with Windows you can be assured that PaperPort will only allow access to folders on your computer to those who have the proper access rights. And you in-turn can only access those folders for which you have access rights.PaperPort utilizes in-place security developed and implemented through Windows so your IT staff won't have to reinvent the wheel and no additional investment is required. You will be prompted for passwords as necessary as if you were working directly in Windows. You also have complete control to change access to shared folders where you have administrative rights. In addition, PaperPort provides the ability to secure individual PDF files with advanced password control.
Intuitive thumbnail desktop PaperPort Professional provides a visual desktop with large, clear page and document thumbnails to improve the way you work with application files, digital photos, PDF files, scanned and electronic forms, saved Web pages and all your scanned paper documents. Quickly browse, organize and use all your files without having to open them to see what's inside.
Folder management Comprehensive folder management features allow you to organize documents for ease of information access. You can distinguish folders by choosing from 29 colors. Use folder directories to help you locate documents with ease. Attach folder notes and automatically add that information to files as you scan them. Even create multiple folders at once by importing a list of folder names from a text file.
Fast, easy electronic form filling Create neat, shareable and searchable forms that mirror paper originals in minutes. Extensive control over form elements ensures perfect forms every time. With PaperPort's FormTyper feature, you will never have to fill out another form by hand. FormTyper automatically recognizes check boxes and identifies the form fields so you can quickly tab to the next fillable field, type in the information, and print, save or e-mail the completed form. PaperPort's transparent stamps are perfect for adding scanned signatures. It's faster and cheaper then faxing or mailing. And you never have to worry about illegible handwriting!
Locate important folders immediately PaperPort Professional allows you to bookmark your commonly used folders so you can get to your documents right away. A "back" button makes it easy to revisit recently viewed folders eliminating wasted time navigating to information.
Find documents instantly using standard search engines Because PaperPort saves all your scanned documents and electronic files as fully searchable PDF files on your digital desktop, finding what you need is always fast and easy. All you have to do is enter keywords or phrases into WindowsDesktop Searchor Google to quickly locate a specific file on your computer or shared network.
Indexing on your schedule PaperPort Professional's flexible Index Manager allows you take advantage of non-peak processing times by scheduling when and how PaperPort will convert all your image files to searchable documents using the built-in OmniPage Search Indexer.

Easily Gather and Share Documents In today's business environment, you can't work in a vacuum. Email provides a fast and convenient way to review and approve documents within a workgroup, or with people outside your organization. PaperPort Professional 12 works with your current email system to enhance the digital review process by converting Word and other editable documents into more secure PDF files which can be read and annotated, but not edited. No more email bottlenecks, file compatibility issues, or confidentiality risks. At last you can share documents simply and securely, while making it easy for colleagues and customers to provide their feedback.
Scan efficient, small color PDF files for sharing Scanning and sharing color PDF files can be a daunting task. Each page of a typically scanned color PDF file can be over a megabyte in size. If you are scanning several color pages or more, the size can be too large to send that file through email. PaperPort Professional now uses PDF-MRC High Compression Technology to turn a 15MB color file into less that 2MB!
Capture review comments with a rich set of annotations For capturing review comments, PaperPort supports creating and viewing annotations within PDF files, including sticky notes and highlights, as well as straight and free-form lines. Text boxes provide full control over text and box attributes.
Dynamic and transparent stamps PaperPort's dynamic stamps automatically include author, date and time. Transparent stamps are ideal for adding scanned signatures to documents to indicate approval.
PDF security features Advanced security features like passwords and encryption, let you control who can access and/or modify specific documents. This way, you can share documents without risk of confidentiality breaches or unauthorized modifications.
Capture web pages as PDF Capture Web pages as PDF files, providing a full-color duplicate for use offline. This is a great way to store a permanent record of a Web site or speed up Web-based research. It's also ideal for sharing Web pages as PDF attachments instead of sending a link that requires connectivity to the Web. Captured Web pages look exactly like they would if you had sent them to your printer, so it's perfect for saving copies of receipts from web purchases without wasting paper.
Section 508 and Microsoft Windows XP certified PaperPort Professional meets Section 508 standards, established by the US government to make software accessible for people with disabilities. Plus, it's certified for use on the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.
SendTo document workflow You can e-mail, fax or send your documents to repositories on a networked file server with a simple drag-and-drop onto the PaperPort SendTo Bar. The PDF file format combined with the SendTo Bar makes it easy to distribute documents in a form that is viewable and printable on any computer around the world.
Seamless movement of files between PC and ECM systems PaperPort Professional lets you quickly move or scan files between individual desktops to document management repositories such as Microsoft SharePoint.
