At the core, iRacing is exactly what I've been wanting for a long time. I've always wanted the freedom of online pickup races with the structure of a league and that's pretty much exactly what they have at iRacing. You can race anytime that fits your schedule (no more getting up early on Saturday morning!) and you can still compete in a 12-week long season for points and ultimately division/series championship.
The cars are well modeled both aesthetically as well as the physics and there are plenty of options for nearly everyone -- stock cars/trucks/etc for the oval people and several road-racing choice for those who like turning both directions. The tracks are simply amazing; the level of detail, and overall feel driving around these real-world tracks will blow your mind (no fantasy tracks here; nothing but reality!).
The integration of the simulation software with their private-accessed web site has a lot of advantages; new functions can be added to the web site easily without affecting the championships under-way (e.g., calendar feature, new statistics pages, etc.) and using the web as a distribution mechanism brings a lot of benefits to the end-user. We no longer need to go looking for patches, they're literally handed to us on a silver platter. In some ways it's like a web version of Steam. In addition to simplicity, I feel that we get patches and updates quicker -- many of the other sims I've played seem to have many weeks or months of waiting between patches; the iRacing guys roll them out pretty much between each 12-week season (and more frequently if necessary).
Right now iRacing is pretty young with a fairly small number of members -- I don't know the correct number, but seems like it is somewhere between 6,000 to 8,000 spread all across the world. Most of these folks seem to be in other timezones from me (e.g., eastern US, Europe, etc.) so I sometimes have difficulty finding enough folks to race at 10pm pacific time. Given the high quality of the service, I'm confident that this will get better over time as more folks from the west coast join up.
