ResumeMaker Professional 11 (Old Version) Review

Package clearly states it imports resumes. When you get to that part it tells you that if you want to import it will have to be plain text (i.e. no Word docs), with bullets and formatting removed. Well, that's pretty much just not importing.
Secondly, the program hangs on XP all the time. I have a brand new machine, with patches. And I updated Resume Maker right off. Still hangs.
Really, this is a waste of money. I'm giving up on it and going back to Word. All the other 'features' (sample resumes, etc.) can be found at many websites.

I've tried several landscaping programs before and this one is definately the best. I feel much more legitimate as a landscape designer now that I can put together plans in a timely manner that look just right. Their technical support is also great and it's nice that they offer a demo on their website.

Microsoft Office 2004 Professional Upgrade (Mac)

It was a relief for me to be able to keep and upgrade Word and Excel, and to get Virtual PC (for Access) as well. I used them a lot on my PC a few years ago, and when I first switched to Mac, couldn't find software that did what they did. I had no trouble installing the upgrade on my iMac G5, nor did I have trouble installing Virtual PC. The only thing that WAS disappointing was that I couldn't find out whether accessing the Internet from Virtual PC would open me up to PC-type viruses, or if Mac's Unix system would protect me there, too. I continue to be disappointed that the Mac version of this software is not as rich as the PC version. But the upgrade itself worked well for what it was meant to do.

Ghost Rider - Blaze Of Glory Review

while i've never read comics on my computer before i loved this dvd. every ghost rider comic from when i was growing up and reading the series on a $13 dvd. this provided me weeks of reading material. danny ketch's ghost rider is so much cooler than the first one and with all the other characters and spirits of vengeance all here it was great to finish the stories i didn't get to as a kid. much less expensive than trying to track down all the comics. the one drawback is that there are several crossover series that are in these story lines and so some of them you only get half the story. thats the only reason i gave it 4 stars instead of 5.

Chief Architect Home Designer Essentials 10 Review

Chief Architect Home Designer Essentials 10
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
... but still not quite great.
The short version: About the closest I can come to a recommendation for it is this: everything else I've tried is much worse. Punch! is a waste of money and the 2 or 3 other packages I tried before that were even worse. So Chief Architect wins the race but only by default.
It has a pretty decent user interface but I get so annoyed by the constant signs of money grubbing by Chief Architect. They don't add features to make the more expensive versions valuable enough to buy, they disable trivial/expected features in the cheaper versions in the hopes that you'll be so annoyed with it that you'll spend money for the "better" version.
Some examples:
They disable ledger sized printing in Home Designer Essentials. I have a really nice 11x17 color inkjet printer. The paper size is there in the printer properties dialog, but they prevent it from being used. It pops up a dialog telling me I can't print that size. To get around that I have to make the Home Designer window full-screen, hit Alt-PrintScreen and then open Paint.NET and paste the screen capture as a new image. Then I have to crop the window borders and menus from the image. Then I can print it ledger sized. Every time I want to print our plan I get that little jab in the eye from Chief Architect saying "give us more money and we'll stop jabbing you" :\
Another dumb one - it doesn't save your toolbar settings when you exit the program. It's not the end of the world to have to keep restoring the tape measure, the door styles, the window styles etc. every time I start it up but it's just another reminder every time I use the program that "for only another $250 we'll stop poking your in the other eye" mentality.
They just pick really pointless things to disable and they do it just for the annoyance factor, not because it costs them more to produce or support. If it had a limit on the number of square feet in the design or if they added extra libraries and the ability to do spiral staircases in more expensive versions then it would seem reasonable to charge more for more capable versions.
The good news is that if you can ignore the constant reminders that they want more money from you, it works pretty well. The user interface for constructing the plan is quite good, definitely light years ahead of Punch! It can usually figure out what you're trying to do and the objects behave pretty much as expected, cabinets try to stick to walls, walls join together as expected.
The less than wonderful technical bits:
It has fairly limited libraries and is missing some pretty obvious objects in them. For example it has no bathroom vanity. If you want a standard vanity like at the home improvement store you have to build it out of multiple cabinets, add a counter top and add a sink and faucet to it. I'd guess that about 30% of the items you'd expect to find in the libraries won't be there.
If you fiddle around with the camera position/height/angle too much you'll get it into a state where the perspective is so distorted that you'll have to close the 3D view and open it again.
The rendering is slow and pretty low quality - it's about video game quality circa 2000 which is to say somewhat crude looking/pixellated. The default coloring and lighting is really bogus, floor coverings and wall colors that look okay in the library browser look very dark and muddy when applied to the model. A faster video card doesn't help the rendering either, I'm running a $300 HD6950 video card. The rendering is CPU bound. Even with an E8400 processor it takes more than 30 seconds to render a fairly simple model in high quality. That's on a 2400 sq ft ranch style without any landscaping or terrain. If you're planning on designing a three story 5,000 sq ft McMansion you better bring an alarm clock.
The upgrade from V9.6 to 10 corrupted some of the library objects and textures. It also seems to have fewer objects in the libraries though I don't know that for sure.
It uses a binary file format so you can't search plans or compare alternative designs using text tools like you could if it were in .xml. You laugh, but after you've been working on your plan for 6 months and you've got a bunch of different .plan files saved you'll really wish you could search the plans for the one with a note in it that says "With bathroom rotated 180 degrees" or something like that. It doesn't generate previews so you can't quickly flip through the plans to look for the one you want. The only way you can find which file you've saved a specific change in is either use that for the file name (which isn't feasible if you've made more than one change) or else keep a separate .txt file with your own crib notes on which file contains which alternatives.
Putting the "get off my lawn" factor aside, it's a decent quality package and it's *much* better bang for the buck than anything else I tried.

Fusion 7.5 Full Review

Fusion 7.5 Full
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this product a few years ago, at a very good price. It is excellent for those with limited experience with HTML, and allows the quick production of decent looking web pages and consistently styled websites. And I thoroughly appreciate the products ability to generate appropriate navagational links for each page in the site structure.
These strengths also lead to designer weaknesses. The web design industry has moved away from strict HTML coding for both structure and presentation, and moved to XHTML (for structure) and CSS (for presentation). Designers who rely too heavily on Fusion's HTML formatting of presentation run the risk of creating much more work in the future, that could be saved through the proper use of CSS. (A good book on better coding practices is "Web Standards Solutions" by Dan Cederholm, and should be consulted once the initial flurry of design work is done, to truly appreciate the wisdom of separating presentation from structure.)
Since I haven't used more than 30% of Fusion 7.5's full abilities, much more remains to be discovered. Their current (version 10 ?) and future products may have all of these issues addressed and improved upon.

Frets on Fire - Guitar Game - Alternative to Guitar Hero Review

Frets on Fire - Guitar Game - Alternative to Guitar Hero
Average Reviews:

As previous reviewer said, this is a free download from the guys who designed it. They even have the Guitar Hero songs available for it. I have not yet gotten it to work on Vista, only XP, and I did have a problem with it crashing or hanging sometimes, but that might have been my crappy old PC. It is, simply put, a way to play Guitar Hero if you don't own the game...or to decide if you want the game. Or, in my case, to practice at home before a tournament at work. ;) You use the keyboard, and can either pick it up to hold it, or redefine the keys to use the keyboard normally. I used A,S,D,F and [space] for the notes, and [Enter] to strum, and it worked pretty well.

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate V14 Review

Pinnacle Studio Ultimate V14
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Pinnacle Studio line of video processing software has a
very simple and intuitive interface. It is relatively easy
to learn the software. Even though it is for beginners/home
users, it does provide options for more advanced, Hollywood
style video processing. But only when it works.
I have used Studio consistently since its version 9. The
most recent version is now Studio 14 and it comes
in several variations: basic, ultimate, and ultimate
collection.
My recommendation: 4 stars for its simple interface. Zero
for everything else.
* Installing Studio 14 (in my case the Ultimate version)
If you purchased earlier "Ultimate" or "Plus" versions of
Studio, or if you bought fancy "transitions" or similar
premium features for earlier versions of Studio, the ONLY
way that you can take advantages of only SOME of them,
is to re-install the older Studio versions. In previous
installations of Studio, you could simply reuse your
activation code to get those features, plugins, or premium
options back. For Studio 14, your earlier activation codes
or serial numbers mean nothing. You have to reinstall old
software. But how many customers keep three, four earlier
versions of a software? Pinnacle never gave a hint that
an older version has to be kept.
Furthermore, even with older versions, you cannot recover
everything for Studio 14. For example, I had already paid
for two plugins (known as Heroglyph and Adorage). Even
though I re-installed Studio versions 11 and 12, I was
unable to get these two plugins activated. I contacted
Pinnacle. They asked me to repay for these plugins! That's
absolutely unacceptable.
Note that the above problems are well documented in
Pinnacle's own users' forums: to visit, go to pinnaclesys
dot com, under support, click on forums, and follow the
"edit" forum. Many customers have complained that they had
to go back and install Studio 10, 11, 12 in order to get
back some of their "transitions" or other premium features.
* Customer service: absolutely horrible
You will have a service code that entitles you to one phone
call. For other calls, you will have to pay. When I called
the support, it was an absolute waste of time. First,
there is a long queue. Second, the person only talked
in uncertain terms: "it should", "I think so", "try it",
"I am not 100% sure", etc. No definite or precise responses
to any of my installation or activiation questions.
* Pixelation problems continue
A popular feature of many video processing software is that
of making a video (DVD) of still photos, using certain
transitions or filters to make photo presentation more
fun. A common (and well documented) problem with Studio
version 10 and afterward has been pixelation. The photos,
especially at transition points, get pixelated and look
ugly. Pinnacle's response: it is your hard-drive, update
your video card driver, replace your video card driver,
re-size your photos, etc.
The pixelation problem is a very serious one as there are
several threads in the "edit" forum, each consisting of at
least 40-50 individuals experiencing the same problem and
complaining.
* Personal experience with Studio 14
No MAJOR differences with Studio 12. It crashed the very
first time but worked the second time. However, because I
still do not have access to many of the "transitions",
premium features, and plugins that I already purchased
with earlier versions of Studio, I do not know if I can
do anything other than simple video processing that I can
do otherwise with the free video software that comes with
the Windows operating systems.

Cakewalk Pyro Audio Creator Review

Cakewalk Pyro Audio Creator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't usually write reviews and when I do they are usually short ones. I'm generally pretty satisfied with stuff I buy because I research before purchase. Back in 2004, I started using an audio program called Cakewalk Pyro 2003. It was a pretty awesome program that allowed me to do exactly what I wanted to do - switch from analog cassette recording to digital PC to CD recording and still make "blended" recordings. By "blended" I actually mean crossfading...which is overlapping the audio at the beginning and end of each track. I did it for years with two CD players, an audio mixer and a cassette deck. By the way, I bought my first PC in 1991 and am on my ninth one now. I know what I'm doing.
Pyro 2003 allowed me to do the same thing on my PC and then burn the project to a CD...yielding a very pleasant, professional series of songs, overlapped with the next succeeding one with no break in the music. Then I bought a new PC with Windows Vista. Pyro 2003 wouldn't work on it and Cakewalk had no other "Pyro" program that would work on Vista. Then late last year (unknown to me) Cakewalk released "Pyro Audio Creator"; their new program that does audio editing (among other things) and though it is supposed to work with XP, it is specifically "recommended for Vista". I discovered it online and rushed out to buy it.
After installation, the first thing you see is a "bug sheet" that pops up telling you all the problems this program still has. I reviewed it but figured it would still work for me. First problem...no audio. After reinstalling, still no audio. Found two patches at Cakewalk's website for "version 1.0" of this program but nowhere, anywhere on anything does it say what version this program is. Plus, in order to download the patches, you have to "register" the program. Once registered, you can't return it or sell it to anybody else. Oh well. So I went ahead and installed the two patches. GREAT....have audio now.
I read the online instructions and tried to create my first Pyro "project". Pyro 2003 was a neat program that you could figure out easily and had a great interface. Things work like you expected them to. But this one, Pyro Audio Creator, is way too complex and is supposed do things only people in a pro sound studio would want to do...and I guarantee you they wouldn't be doing it with a $40.00 program. To move around in this program and set up your audio tracks is way, way too cumbersome, takes way too many clicks and (get this) with Vista (the "recommended" operating system) drag and drop in not functional. By now I'm not happy.
After playing with my project, I go to burn it to CD, but guess what...there is no option to do that like in Pyro 2003. I have to save it (I guess) and go to the "burning" part of the program to burn it. I save it, which takes about 5 minutes, and then I go to the burn section and can't find my project now because it didn't tell me where it saved it. I have to do a hard drive search to find it.
By now I've spend about 5 hours trying to get this overpriced roll of toilet paper to work so I decided to take a break and watch a movie with my son. I turned the monitor off but left the PC running. Two hours later I return for more gnashing of teeth and discover my PC has entered Vista's new "Auto Repair mode" in an attempt to save the operating system from death. Auto repair finally stops and the PC reboots. My wallpaper is different and, guess what, Pyro Audio Creator is completely gone. Windows uninstalled it. Vista must be pretty smart - it recognizes garbage and gets rid of it automatically. I wonder what else I've lost but just haven't discovered yet.
Bottom Line: No refunds allowed, email tech support only (yeah that will work) and I'm out not only the 40 bucks plus tax but I still don't have a program to do my music. Cakewalk can contact me and give me a refund or I'm going to plaster this review everywhere I can on the internet. Awful program, awful program with known bugs, awful program that doesn't work, awful program that endangers your computer. This is a "Don't Buy"!

Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Professional 2002 Review

Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Professional 2002
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a java developer, who got a little curious, I wanted to see what Visual Studio.net (professional edition) offers to a developer. During installation, the first thing that I noticed is the 2 gig disk space that the professional edition requires. After the installation, I test drove the IDE and I have to admit that I was not disappointed with Visual Studio .NET. Here is why.
Well-Integrated IDE: -
This is by far the best suite of Microsoft languages and tools. It contains the new Visual Basic .NET, which is totally object oriented and also Visual C# .NET that I found easy to use. The ASP .NET really captured my vote at how easy it was to create asps. The Visual Studio .NET provides thousands of .NET framework classes making a developers life easy and simple.
The similarity to the J2EE framework indicates that that the .NET framework has the capabilities of delivering object oriented enterprise applications. A downside is that, Windows .Net servers and windows operating systems are automatically included into the application environment. This environment may not be desired in all circumstances.
Web services: -
XML Web services are built on XML, SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI specifications and can be built or consumed by your application without having to write the plumbing code yourself. The tools does it for you. All I had to do was to define my function that I want exposed as a web service and it was automatically deployed for me. I like that in an IDE.
Great Documentation and User interfaces: -
Trust Microsoft to woo you with good looks. The user interface is very intuitive and limiting my reference manual lookups. Even when I needed help, all I had to do was open up my help window and I had access to context sensitive help all the time. Microsoft has done a very nice job there.
Unfulfilled wishes :-
Built-in UML modeling. No architecture is complete without models. MS Visio 2002 integration is made available but I don't have a copy of that installed to see whether there is code synchronization with the models. I think that not providing this feature severely limits the use of vs.net as an IDE of choice for enterprise apps.
Another feature conspicuous by its absence is a built-in automated unit-testing framework, something similar to JUnit testing framework.
Finally, I think that this is a very powerful IDE and it is very developer friendly. For those that are open to any technology, Windows .NET servers and Microsoft Visual Studio .NET is definitely a viable option.

Visual Studio .NET is a superb, next-generation development tool. At its heart is the .NET Framework, a runtime engine and class library that enables rapid application building for both Windows and Web applications. The runtime engine handles housekeeping tasks, like memory management, while also providing fine-grained security and version awareness. The class library reduces the code needed to build rich applications. Visual Studio .NET also provides a slick visual environment, with features like tabbed and docking windows, dynamic online help, and automatic code completion and hints. The common runtime is language-neutral so, for example, Visual Basic programmers can use components written in C# and vice versa. Other languages, such as COBOL and FORTRAN, can plug into Visual Studio, and Microsoft provides a version of the Java language called J#.Overall, Visual Studio .NET is a radical break from the past for Microsoft. C# is an entirely new language, aimed at C and C++ programmers looking for something safer and more productive. Visual Basic .NET is a new twist on the old Microsoft favorite, losing compatibility with earlier versions, but gaining full object orientation as well as access to all the .NET libraries. These two languages, along with J#, have full support for the visual design tools in Visual Studio .NET. Also included is JScript .NET, Microsoft's version of JavaScript, although this comes without a form designer. Visual C++ is similar to earlier versions and is the only compiler included that can build old-style Windows executables. With a compiler switch, it can also target .NET, making it particularly flexible. Visual Studio .NET has two distinct form designers. Windows Forms are for traditional Windows applications, but managed by the common runtime. Web Forms are ASP.NET pages, which means they run on Web servers and work over the Internet.

Netobjects Fusion 10 Upgrade Version

I am not a web designer and this product was recommended for those that have not designed web sites before. The end result looks good for the organization I was making a site for. What is the problem? The support just plain sucks. I don't think in all my years I have seen anything like it. You cannot call support but have to email them. This isn't a new concept, but I am have trying to get the same problem resolved for over 2.5 months now (I am sure it is something simple but not address in the instructions). I am just trying to get something to work that the program says it does. You get one response back a day and there are times you get nothing back for a few days from support. Now, if they READ your email they may at least understand the problem and give you something to try. If they just glanced over the email they may answer a question you did not ask. I could go on and on and show you the email trail from them but just let me say there have got to be other programs you can purchase where you are not still working on the same problem for 2.5 months. Yes, if I could I would return this expensive program and get something that at least I could get answers from support in less than the time I have put in on this. But you see what the price of this product is so I will at least wait for the full 3 months on this ONE problem before investing in something else.
If you think you can use the program and not run into any problems, then it may just work for you. But if you think there could be some issue, some question you may have in the use of the product then unless you have a lot of time to get your site up, you may wish to look for a different program.

PrintMaster Platinum 2.0 Review

PrintMaster Platinum 2.0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a loyal Printmaster user for years. I have upgraded many times because of the ease of use and the variety of design elements available. I recently got a Mac so I purchased the new 2.0 version to use with my new Mac computer. WOW, AM I DISAPPOINTED. The product STINKS!!! Everything that I loved about the older versions is gone. First of all, you have to install all of the art onto your computer. This is a 23G program! But still, the templates are limited, the clip art is awful and I can't seem to layer them onto my own designs without the white background showing around the clip art, so if I have a colored background in my design, I can't get the clip art on my project without the white around it. I imagine it can be done because the white is not in the ready-made templates, but I can't seem to edit it out. If anyone knows how, please let me know. I can't copy and paste outside clip art into it either. It just puts a box with the name of the item and there is no way to activate the contents. As I said, I have been using PrintMaster products for a long time and I can usually figure out most software programs without a problem, but this version has me so frustrated that I will probably uninstall it from my computer. It is not worth the enormous amount of space it takes up. Sadly, I probably can't return the opened item so I am just going to have to eat the $39.99 I paid for this inferior version of a once-loved product. I will try to contact the company to see is there is a satisfaction guarantee, but I'm not hopeful. I would NOT recommend this version of PrintMaster.
UPDATE: Thank you Amazon for your great return policy. You sent a return shipment label and bar code immediatly when I asked to return for a refund on this Horrible Product. Initial shipping was free, so for less than $5 for return shipping, it is well worth it to be rid of PrintMaster 2.0. AMAZON IS THE BEST!
