I should state right up front that I am a professional artist, and use Photoshop regularly. So This application really wasn't made for users like me. It's made for the casual, amateur photographer, in order for them to be able to do something a bit different with their photos, indulge their artistic side without learning something as difficult as Photoshop. I approached exploring "Paint it!" with that in mind, and also tried to find out if it would be of interest to a more sophisticated user.
I took three different types of photos - a landscape, a portrait, and an abstract (a view of a sandy beach, sand and rocks only.) I then applied each style to each photo.
In all cases, I found the impressionist style to be superb. I loved it and will use it in my work! On the other end of the scale, the ink drawing style was awful. Because you cannot change brush pressure, or widths, you have to go with what you get - pen and ink style was little strokes and it missed so much it was pretty useless. It might be okay if you use it and restore an image under it(see below). The other styles ranged in quality somewhere between these two. The Watercolor sketch and Detailed watercolor styles were quite nice, the oil painting was not particularly interpretive, but was quite realistic and I think will be liked a lot by a casual user seeking high realism. I wasn't especially enamored with the Illustration, Colored pencil and Pencil drawing styles, but they were adequate. Pastel really varied by image used. You can also run a second style over the first for some interesting effects.
In addition to running a 'style', Paint it! gives you the option of reverting parts of your photo to the original, and leaving other parts altered. You can use a brush and select both the size as well as the opacity level of the brush, which is very useful in fine tuning the style you've used. Additional tools include crop, multiple choices to rotate, pan using the hand tool, erase (with opacity and size options), draw-- and in draw mode, you have a straight line tool as well as a curved line tool available. These would aid if you wanted to write or draw on top of the image.
Paint it also gives you a very nice ability to resize both your image and your canvas (canvas resising means you can add some background area on one or more sides of the image. Very nice if you want to add words in a clear area, or just extend a drawing.)
Another nice feature is RESTORE DETAIL, which simulates using a layer. Select 'Restore Detail', then choose a large brush size and very low opacity such as 10%. Then as you brush over the image, the original will appear 'behind' the 'style'. The more you brush over a spot the more detail from the original will appear.
You can NOT have multiple images open at the same time, however you can always reopen a previously edited image and continue working on it. The Save As feature is very nice, it appends "-painting" to the original title by default, but you're free to change that during the save process. You can certainly prepare your images in another application and then bring them into Paint it! to use the styles.
There is NO type tool, either, so if you want to use typography, you will need to bring the Paint it! completed image into another application which provides type.
For an inexpensive artistic way to treat photographs, I think that the amateur user who feels a bit artistic will love it. A professional level artist will find ways to play with it, and possibly import a treatment into photoshop or whatever editor they use, to continue the process, but it won't become something they treasure. I believe that the scrapbooker, (not-art) student and casual photographer with an artistic bent will truly enjoy using Paint it!
