For all those who ask, "How can I take black & white photos with my camera?" This is the software tool for you. Don't shoot B/W in camera. Shoot color. It will give you more flexibility in the future. Then use Silver Efex to convert your images to black & white (or, toned duotones). Silver Efex Pro 2 provides even more granularity of control in editing than Silver Efex 1 (especially wrt Brightness, Contrast and Sharpness controls - but also by adding some edge and vignette treatments). It still has the wonderful breadth of film emulating effects and the ability to control the level of grain for those film styles (which span from low to high ISO). It still incorporates the Control Point technology which I love for making adjustments in specific points on an image - certainly more control than you'd get dodging & burning in a darkroom (and with far less processing & trial and error time).
Per the other reviewer's mature rant... I asked Nik's Cust. Svc. Dept. whether I could run Silver Efex Pro 2 in parallel with my Silver Efex Pro 1. Their (responsive) reply was that yes, it certainly could be done but that they highly recommended only running one version of SEP at a time. I haven't researched exporting custom saved presets from one version to another, but since it's possible to download additional presets from Nik's website I would suspect that one could port their own custom presets to another version too. I'll have to test the ones I created in SEP v. 1.
This is a highly rated program in all the well-regarded photo magazines and in the very reputable pro camera stores I shop at and seminars I attend. Thumbs up to Silver Efex.
