Broderbund Print Shop 21 Deluxe Review

(More customer reviews)I've been using Print Shop for many, many years, primarily to make greeting cards and note cards. I've upgraded as upgrades became available and today upgraded from version 20 to version 21 deluxe. I also use Norton A/V which has been around for many years and is in very widespread use.
It seems that the two are almost terminally incompatible. PS v. 21 has many projects that are only available online and must be downloaded. There are many of these in the Printed Greeting cards and constitute all of the projects in the Photo Picture Cards and the Creative Touch cards.
Although, at the price charged for this software, EVERYTHING SHOULD BE ON THE CD"S AND SHOULD NOT REQUIRE ADDITIONAL DOWNLOADING, when downloading is tried, you will get the message "The online server can not deliver the file".
When you search their nearly non-existent technical support section, for a solution, you are told "It has been found that certain software security systems do not allow communication between your computer and Broderbund's file servers. You will need to contact your security software's company for information on how to allow this communication or SIMPLY DISABLE THE SOFTWARE TO ALLOW IT." (Emphasis mine)
It thus seems that the makers of PS 21 (Broderbund? Encore? RiverDeep?) could not be bothered to work out these incompatibilities with one of the most popular and widely installed anti-virus software programs on the market and put their program on the market anyway. Their solution to the inevitable incompatibility which they knew full well existed: Simply disable your anti virus protection......and risk having your system destroyed.
Is this worth paying them another $42 for a questionable upgrade?
I plan to uninstall v.21 and return it tomorrow; stay with v. 20 and cross Broderbund off my list for all future purchases of this type of software.

Create It Review

(More customer reviews)As a graphic artist who has used Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop for photo editing and digital painting/graphic creation from scratch for years, I'm always interested in other graphic programs to see how they work, what exclusive functions they might have and their limitations. This bundle is not for professionals. There's nothing here that a professional probably doesn't already have in a superior form, plus they'll be disappointed in its limitations. For casual users, those new to graphic manipulation, folks who want to do digital scrapbooking and basic photo editing without too many confusing extras, it's a nice little suite of programs to have.
Photo Album 7 has a great intuitive interface, does a very good job of organizing your photos so that you can find them, and does very basic photo editing like whitening teeth and removing blemishes. As a graphic artist, I prefer a program like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, but this very basic photo editor may be all the novice needs or even wants in a photo editing program.
Paint It! takes your photos and turns them into digital paintings, sketches et cetera with the click of a mouse. It's very easy to use for the average or novice user, but has limited capabilities. I can't picture most people using this more than once or twice a year, even for avid digital scrapbookers. You can, however, play with the settings and get all kinds of results and it can be fun to watch what happens to your photo just using the random settings.
Digital Scrapbook Artist 2 is a great tool for scrapbookers that will take the work out of having to come up with layouts every single time. My gripe about this program is that it comes with very little content. You'll have to hunt down resources for actual elements like frames, corners, embellishments and so forth. There are a lot of free sites and pay sites that offer no cost samples or even full packages for no cost, but I can imagine for a beginner this will be frustrating. As a graphic artist I can make my own content, but the target customer for this software will probably not be able to do that. It is otherwise pleasant and easy to use. The interface is not easy to figure out even for advanced users;you'll find yourself referring to the manual a lot to learn to use it.
Panorama Plus takes pictures and stitches them together to create super-wide, seamless panoramic photos. This is mostly useful for landscapes and inanimate objects. You can also do this with videos, but I didn't have any video to try with it. It will export the image into many standard formats, including PDF. There are a few editing tools, like rotating and straightening, and some image enhancement. The actual image editing is so limited that advanced users will find themselves opening their panoramas in another, more complex program to achieve the effects they want, but the average user may find that what it includes is really all they need.
If you bought these programs separately, they would be a lot more expensive, so this bundle is a good value in that respect. I'm giving it 3 stars with a caveat to professionals that they likely already have software that is easier for them to use and probably does a better job. It's fun to play with, but that's about it for the professional. I recommend this bundle for casual users, part time hobbyists, kids, and beginners who can spend the time looking for content for the scrapbooking portion and do not need a lot of actual image enhancement power. If you have the time and want more tools without spending a lot of time or money, I'd recommend Corel PaintShop Photo Pro X3 instead. It is well worth the time and money invested, costs the same as this bundle and does so much more. But if you're going for something without a lot of confusing bells and whistles, this bundle is for you.

Printmaster Platinum V 17.0 Review

(More customer reviews)I've used Printmaster 12 platinum on DVD and liked it well enough but the disk wore out. I knew from reviews of subsequent versions that Broderbund was giving us less and less but even still I was stunned by just how much less. Where are all the projects? Even counting the online projects there just isn't much here for anyone. For kid's masks, version 12 has at least a dozen but this version gives you 2! The cards are terrible - many are just small clipart images with a white background. (At least you won't need much ink). In short, if you want to create anything decent you'll have to design it yourself. Inspired by the ONE nice-looking cut-out card, I was able to search the art work and create several nice cards that I would be pleased to send.

MemoryMixer Version 3 Review

(More customer reviews)Hello.. Let me start off by saying I have been digitally scrapbooking for about 3 years. The only program I have every used before Memory Mixer 3 was Scrapbook Factory so I am going to write my review by comparing the two. I really loved Scrapbook Factory, it is so easy to use. You basically just click and drag everything. Want to rotate a picture, just click on it and drag it to the angel you want. Super easy but man dose it have a lot of bugs. If you want to copy and past something, forget it, it takes forever and if you want to move an object around on the page you have to use the arrow keys because if you try to drag it, it freezes or takes an eternity. When I got my new laptop with Windows 7, it seemed like the problems doubled. I just couldn't stand the slowness and freezing anymore so a friend suggested I try Memory Mixer.
Pro's
-It's very fast. I can drag things across the page and they move immediatly. Also, copy and past are very fast. No freezing. Much better than SF.
-It has better pre-designed pages. I don't really use them, but some of them are pretty cute. Also, the paper and emblishments it comes with look a lot better.
-I love the color match tool. If you put a mat on a picture and you want it to match something else on your page all you have to do is click on the color match tool and drag it to the color you want to match, click on it and your done. You could do this is SF but it was more complicated.
-One of the main reasons I decided to try this is because you can put video, voice overs, and music on your scrapbook page. I though that would be fun and while a really like the voice over and music feature the video is pretty lame. It's tiney, maybe 3 inches by 3 inches and I can't find a way to make it fit the page.
-And last, it's really easy to save as a jpeg or burn to a dvd. You couldn't do this in SF, the only thing I could save them as were pdf files.
Con's
-Once you group items you can't change there size without ungrouping them and changing them all seperatly. This is one of the biggest problems. It drives me CRAZY. I hate it when I get a page almost done and I just need to tweek the size of a few grouped items to make them fit better and I have to do it all seperatly. It's a pain!!!
-You can't rotate a picture by clicking and dragging it, you have to do it on a slider bar off to the left. This isn't a big deal but I just liked the way you could do it in SF better.
-The last thing I really dislike is you can't move items off the page and set them off to the side until you are ready to use them. I hope that makes sense. A square page only takes up so much space on the screen you have a lot left over to the side. I liked usuing this as my work space. I could put pictures or embelishments or other things I wanted to use on my page there until I was ready to use them. Then I would just drag them into place. But if you try to do that in MM3 it won't allow you to. It tells you, you have to put it back on the page or delete it. Really stupid. Why would they do that.
Overall, I like it. It has some great features and you can put a nice page together pretty easily with none of the bugs that were so frustrating in SF. But there a still a ton of little things they could do to make it MUCH better. I wish I could combine the two, then you would have the perfect scrapbooking program. Hope this helps.

PrintMaster Platinum 2.0 Review

(More customer reviews)I have been a loyal Printmaster user for years. I have upgraded many times because of the ease of use and the variety of design elements available. I recently got a Mac so I purchased the new 2.0 version to use with my new Mac computer. WOW, AM I DISAPPOINTED. The product STINKS!!! Everything that I loved about the older versions is gone. First of all, you have to install all of the art onto your computer. This is a 23G program! But still, the templates are limited, the clip art is awful and I can't seem to layer them onto my own designs without the white background showing around the clip art, so if I have a colored background in my design, I can't get the clip art on my project without the white around it. I imagine it can be done because the white is not in the ready-made templates, but I can't seem to edit it out. If anyone knows how, please let me know. I can't copy and paste outside clip art into it either. It just puts a box with the name of the item and there is no way to activate the contents. As I said, I have been using PrintMaster products for a long time and I can usually figure out most software programs without a problem, but this version has me so frustrated that I will probably uninstall it from my computer. It is not worth the enormous amount of space it takes up. Sadly, I probably can't return the opened item so I am just going to have to eat the $39.99 I paid for this inferior version of a once-loved product. I will try to contact the company to see is there is a satisfaction guarantee, but I'm not hopeful. I would NOT recommend this version of PrintMaster.
UPDATE: Thank you Amazon for your great return policy. You sent a return shipment label and bar code immediatly when I asked to return for a refund on this Horrible Product. Initial shipping was free, so for less than $5 for return shipping, it is well worth it to be rid of PrintMaster 2.0. AMAZON IS THE BEST!

NOVA Print Artist Platinum 24 - Windows Review

(More customer reviews)Yes, this version is still minus one nice feature of the old Sierra versions, and that would be the Graphics Grabber - BUT... The rest... is what I would say is a much better **updated** Sierra like product but now from Nova! Gone is the cartoonish and childish GUI, or User Interface, main window or whatever you fill it's called. Now is a nice and easy to follow GUI with all functions present at any given time as one needs them. It looks as if the program window now fits the screen of a wide screen monitor. Also no more scrolling on the right side in order to see all available editing options, as in text, color options, etc, like you had on version 23 but now a nicer and cleaner, better flowing GUI. The much noted poor graphics search function has been fixed, not like Graphics Grabber but at least you can choose to search a term in a single category or **All** categories. And.. I think that this is worth noting that PA 24 still had the advanced layering found in more expensive products - add multiple layers to your project, make as many layers visible, printable or locked from editing - Great for making custom templates!
Still a little slow to start in an XP virtual machine but I don't care, all else with it seems to work fine so far.
So, Nova has turned me back. I liked there Greeting Card Factory line and loved the Sierra PA line, I feel this new Nova version of it is back on track!!

Corel Paint Shop Pro X Scrapbooking Edition Review

(More customer reviews)This software is wonderful! I have been trying to find a good program to scrapbook digitally for many years. I've tried Broderbund (sp?) whose interface was too clumsy, Nova which was rather difficult at times (many things you can't do) and now this. When I first took this out of the package and installed it I thought I had made the wrong decision with this software since there were very, very few backgrounds, templates or embellishements even when I opened the Xtras CDs that came with this. I truly did not feel the Xtras CDs were worth purchasing since there are very few things on them. But then I found the tutorials that are included on the CD and watched the one about making collages. I didn't get halfway through the video - I had figured out how to do it. I have now created some of the best scrapbook pages I've ever made. Within hours I had a beautiful collage/letter to send with my holiday cards. My husband's first impression was a heartfelt "It's lovely". What has so throughly convinced me of the abilities of this software is that I can take ANY image and make it a background, I can create and manipulate text almost any way I want, I've been able to create my own embellishments as well as using downloaded embellishments from websites that sell it (.png format). I feel like I have no limitations on what I can do now. I imagine this software is not as sophistacated as Adobe Illustrator, but then it probably isn't as complicated to use (from what I remember that program has a rather steep learning curve).
You can also use the eyedropper tool to "pick up" any color from any picture, background, or element (read "anything") in the program. I was able to take the background colors and make embellishments that matched! I can take a color from one of my pictues and make a background that matches. You can also remove backgrounds from photos - it takes a bit of time to do, but the area around the image will be transparent - this functionality has many uses. You can also save your files in many different formats including .jpg for file sharing, etc. There are so many more features I couldn't possibly list them here, nor would you want me too (too much time).
If you only use premade templates and don't feel ready to venture out on your own yet this software may not be for you unless you find a website that sells templates for this software. You could start with something like Nova Scrapbook Factory Deluxe 3.0, which I liked, and when you start becoming really frustrated by its limiations it may be time to move up to this program. You may also want to read a book about digital scrapbooking to give you ideas and alert you to possibilities.
The great thing about this program is that it isn't just for scrapbooking. You can do all your photo manipulation in it . I have always liked Paint Shop Pro so much that I haven't been able to afford to upgrade my copy since version 6, but I kept using that version. I'm so glad I got version 10 as it is very user friendly too. But please know that version 10 (which comes with this package) is not the most recent version. Version 11 is out now. If you don't want/need the Xtras CDs that come with this package you may want to just buy the most recent version and buy some embellishements from a website that makes .png files (portable network graphics format) or make your own.
I hope you have as much fun with this software as I am having. I highly recommend the training videos on the CD - they really help.

The Print Shop 22 Deluxe Review

(More customer reviews)I have had minor problems with previous versions of Print Shop, but the new 22 version installed without a hitch and runs like a champ.
I am not a professional graphic artist and do not work with desktop publishing or illustrations on a day-to-day basis. I think this is why I become so frustrated wrestling with Corel Draw and find a more intuitive and user-friendly program like PS-22 so useful, and indeed, fun to play around with.
My "thing" is scrimshaw. I am constantly on the lookout for little gimcracks like, perhaps an artistic compass rose, a sea monster, a mermaid, etc., to add that little finishing touch to my work. Finding a huge source of such stuff that can be easily edited, resized, and printed as an overlay that will exactly fit into my work is like finding gold.
There's a lot of very attractive bang for the buck in Print Shop 22.

Serif CraftArtist Platinum Edition Review

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a reasonably priced, but fun, stationary program so that I could design save the dates, invites, programs, etc for my wedding. I was pretty discouraged when I realized that many of the programs on the market were priced over $100. The whole reason behind designing my own stationary is to save money- not spend more! I was optimistic when buying this program, but had low expectations. Let me tell you, this software BLEW ME AWAY. The first reviewer said that it "wasn't as easy as advertised" and I completely disagree. This program is very user friendly. After tinkering around for a mere 20 minutes, I had come up with an invitation-worthy design. Every element is so easy to customize. You can use your own picture and art, or you can go onto their website and download "digikits" which feature more artistic elements, and range in price from free- 16 bucks, with most below 5 bucks (plus they give you a $10 credit for signing up with their website).
I am so excited to use this for all of my wedding correspondence as well as many, many future projects! I highly recommend this product.

Art Explosion Publisher Pro 2.0 Review

(More customer reviews)Publisher Pro 2.0 is a great product and a good follow-on to the first version. Not only can you easily produce small publications (I create 16 page "tabloid sized" newsletters, with tons of photos) and export them as pdf files, but you can now open and edit pdf files, a feature I haven't seen in any affordable publisher. Its interpretation is precise, though when it meets a change in formatting (such as a single word in bold type within a paragraph), it interprets that as the end of a text block and starts a new section. I only use that feature when I want to fill out forms I've received from others or add a little text or images to them. I wouldn't try to heavily edit a large file. Pdf creation now includes form fields, which allows for more interactive features such as radial and other buttons and fill-out-able forms in addition to the standard pdf bookmarks, index and table of content which link to content within the pdf, hyperlinks to external sites, and more.
As in the previous version, it still has lots of pre-made templates, but the blank templates are still the best. I love being able to make a tri-fold brochure and actually selecting each page I want to work on separately: the right panel, left panel back panel and interior spread. The program then prints it in the correct sequence on the page. And in each of the 24 categories (including Banners, business forms, greeting cards, webpages...) there are many blank styles from which to chose.
As a volunteer newsletter editor (with no formal training in design and only some spare time), I find myself in the position of producing newsletters, flyers, tri-fold brochures and ad books not only for the large regional and local group of one organization, but also for my friends' school groups and churches and the local library. I often have to send the files to professional printers who require high-quality pdf files. It's a little more complex than either it's predecessor (Pub. pro version 1) or the older version of MS Publisher I had used before (a program I was happy with, but it had no pdf support), but most questions are easily resolved by refering to the in-program help files. On the other hand, it's a more powerful program with color separation, palette (incliding Pantone) support, transparencies and effects - features you'd expect in higher end programs. It also has a more flexible studio bar with tear off tabs for line style, formatting, colors, object styles, etc.., that you can view, hide or drag to arrange.
Included with the program is the free Publisher Pro Photo Editor, which allows you to draw and paint using layers and transparencies, and then export your pictures in a variety of formats (including some transparent versions), such as jpg, png, gif, etc. It doesn't have a lot of filters and fancy stuff, but it's a good little program for simple photo editing or creating a small graphic.
But most important, the telephone customer support was good. When I first got the program, I had difficulty opening some, but not all, of my older Publisher Pro files - the program crashed! I called customer support after a few days trying to figure out myself what the difference in the files was. I was told it had to do with the Nova clip art in the files and to remove the images and the file would work. Luckily, I had the previous version installed on another machine. I noticed in the Tools: Resource Manager that those clipart files were "linked," so selected "unlink" (which embeds the image) and then the files opened fine. (The Resource Manager is a nice feature that shows you what images and fonts are in your document, what their size and status are, and allows you to jump right to them). Nova Developement is currently working on a fix for the problem.
Pros: great price (especially if you have a rebate), good customer support, some high-end features, free photo editor and the ability to export to pdf.
Cons: a little harder to learn (reading the tutorials helps!), legacy files crash unless the clipart is embedded.
Overall: If you want a more powerful publishing program that produces quality pdf files, but is still within your budget, this is the one!
p.s. If you do get this program, you should check out the entertaining place-holder text, with it's odd pop-culture references that form random stories. More interesting than Lorem ipsum.
