Nancy Drew : Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake (Jewel Case) Review

Nancy Drew : Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake (Jewel Case)

Hounded by a pack of shadowy dogs, a dreamy summer cabin at Moon Lake becomes a nightmare for Nancy Drew! The lake's residents tell tales about a notorious gangster who lived there long ago with his beloved pets. Are the dogs still protecting his secrets? They're getting closer; should Nancy run for her life or risk their bared fangs in her search for the truth? Once a hideout for a notorious gangster, this lakeside cabin may hold clues to his villainious past. There is nothing modern about Moon Lake. Rely on old-fashioned sleuthing skills to solve its mysteries. Listen closely in the forests and fields as you sniff out clues. You may hear the answer in a bird's distant call. Hidden deep below the sunnny skies and crystal-clear lake are dark caverns where secrets are safe from prying eyes. Folks living around Moon Lake seem friendly, but someone's hiding a secret behind that down-home hospitality. P.S If you need help with this game, please post a review titled "Dear Nancy," I will try to respond as soon as possible but please be patient and check every day. I can't give you any direct answers as it would spoil it for other people. I hope to hear from you soon!:)

Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express (WIN 2000,XP,VISTA) Review

Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express (WIN 2000,XP,VISTA)
Average Reviews:

This game was fun, but there were significant downfalls to it's layout:
PROS:
Excellent mystery soundtrack
Good acting from 14 of the 15 characters (the american woman with the accent that drifts in and out of a southern twang was the only letdown)
Good LONG gameplay
Extremely original plot
CONS:
REDUNDANT BORING SCENERY: I am the sort that doesn't typically LIKE to play games all the way through with a walkthrough. However after a short beginning, the scenery remained the same through the ENTIRE length of the game. Your character is on a five-car train, (restaraunt car, baggage car, salon car, and two residing-compartment cars). Without a change of things to look at, you will find yourself endlessly searching and REsearching the same brown/gray rooms on the train, ALL of which look identical with the exception of the passengers' luggage atop the racks. Once you find your list of clues, there is a short cinematic break, and you start all over again, interviewing the same list of characters, and searching the same rooms again for the next list of clues that spawned themselves after the last round. If the same old repetitive sceneries and gameplay styles don't bother you, then this shouldn't be an issue. I myself, like variety.
NO TUTORIAL: There was no tutorial, so from the get-go, it took a while just to learn how to move the character, go in and out of the inventory, inspect things, etc., and it wasn't until about 15 minutes to the end of the game I finally discovered that if you quickly double-click a doorway or direction, it will skip past the slow "step, step, step, step, step, step, turn doorknob, swing door open, walk inside" thing, and just allow your character to appear in the next room. Information that certainly would have been handy in the BEGINNING of the game.
INVENTORY MENUS: Combining items is a pain, and without a tutorial or any leads whatsoever, you wouldn't even know HOW to combine items. There is NOTHING in the game from the very beginning to the very end that explains the use of your inventory menus. I was well into the game before I knew that combining items was even possible, and that goes for reading your documents, studying the passenger passports etc. Your character will say things like "I will save this in my scrapbook for later use", without any way of knowing what the scrapbook is, how to gain access to it, how to flip through it once you've found it, yada yada, list goes on...
GAME-MAKERS ASSUME YOUR'E A ROCKET SCIENTIST BY NATURE, (you know, as most PC gamers are...): There is an extreme lack of guidance in certain areas where the game expects you to do things that without any REAL LIFE knowledge of criminal investigations, you would never know to do... For instance, there is a part where you are supposed to make a radio work to contact the outside world. After looking it up on the internet, I discovered that you have to place the bowl on the table, fill it with orange juice, put a small statue in it, wrap the statue in some bent copper (which you yourself had to custom bend from a passenger's bracelet, which you don't know how to do, because of the lack of explanation in combining items, the inventory menu thing again), and connect that to the radio, and then custom bend a butter knife, and pound a nail into the end of it to make a makeshift SOS transmitter key, and then connect some wiring back to the radio. Ahh, remember the good old days in college under the guidance of all our criminal justice professors, when we learned how to fix a radio with a fish bowl, orange juice, statue, copper bracelet, electric wiring, butterknife, hammer and a nail? ALWAYS a useful technique in the detective business... I guess I wouldn't have been irritated with the unlikely radio-fixing peice of this story, if there had even been ONE HINT ANYWHERE IN THE GAME that this was the solution to fixing the radio, ex., A "When Technology Fails" book on the shelf with hints for fixing broken electronic appliances out of household items, or, a letter found from someone, to someone, about items that are useful in fixing things... Just assuming that the gamer knows enough about electronics to put THAT ridiculous combination together was only one of several crazy assumptions the game-makers made.
Overall, this game would be best played from the beginning with a printed-out walkthrough at the ready. Still worth playing I suppose, but only for the amount I paid for it, which was a little over a dollar. Even if the lack of guidance weren't an issue, the dialogue and SAME scenery throughout would not be enough to capture most people's interest long enough to figure out the mystery, which is sad, because the first fiteen minutes are a real hoot.

DARK FALL: THE JOURNAL (JEWEL CASE) Review

DARK FALL: THE JOURNAL (JEWEL CASE)
Average Reviews:

I loved this game. I enjoy puzzle/adventure games, and this one was just right. Too often a puzzle game is overly cryptic or too simplistic to be much fun, and usually the player ends up in a blind alley with no clue where to go. This game is open-ended enough to allow flexibility, but there's enough to find and enough going on in each area to keep it interesting even when you have to backtrack searching for a clue you missed.
In addition to that, the atmosphere is nice and creepy. The music and sound effects are great. Play it with the lights off for full effect.
Game play is nice and straightforward. It's easy to find your way around, and it's basically a point and click game. You don't have to master any complicated key combinations to play it.
And the last item: the central puzzle is set up in a realistic way, using real-world scenarios. By this I mean, nobody has set up a magical chess game that you have to solve to get into a locked area, or designed a labyrinth in the cellar that you have to navigate to pick up a scrap of paper. Sure, it's supernatural, and there are puzzles, but they make sense in context. I appreciate that, because it's easier to immerse yourself in the fantasy when you're working with real-life objects and puzzles.

Nancy Drew: Danger By Design Review

Nancy Drew: Danger By Design
Average Reviews:

This game comes in two disks; both are needed for install, but only one is needed for play. The game begins with a peek at Nancy Drew's bedroom and has a creative way to access the tutorial.
The graphics were nice. Many areas Nancy visits are light and sunny, as opposed to other games. The people were well-drawn and executed, though the people of Haunted Carousel are probably the best so far. Interacting with them was odd, though. Nancy didn't seem to need to talk to people very much, or be able to talk to them face-to face all the time. Often, when she'd go to see them, they would have nothing to say or be busy behind a door.
The puzzles ran the gamut, from very easy to "Universal Hints, here I come!" (Too bad for me, there was no UHS help when I played the game, though I did find a walkthrough.) I did have to cheat twice. Once, I feel it was something I could have figured out for myself if I had been patient enough. The other time, I truly feel a player would be hard pressed to get. Overall, though, I was pleased with the puzzles. Most puzzles fell in the middle of the spectrum and were challenging without being too difficult.
Moving around town was comfortable. Nancy uses a map of the Metro in the same manner she uses maps in other games like Scarlet Hand and Stay Tuned. However, the process of getting from one place to the next seems much faster in this game than in those games. There was also one cutaway similar to the tunnel-walking in Deception Island. The cutaway in Design is more enjoyable because is not as long and a flashlight is used, allowing the player to see what Nancy walks through.
Calling people is annoying in this game because the airline has conveniently lost Nancy's cell phone, and she uses land lines to make calls. To call the US, she has to dial a calling card AND THEN the number desired, dialing about 21 numbers for each call! Making calls takes forever.
Nancy needs to spend and earn money in this game. The manner in which she does this is not as irritating as in Old Clock, because in this game she does not risk losing money while making money.
Overall, I really liked this game. It has a much different feel to it. Why? Partly the locale. Partly the light and sunny atmosphere of many scenes. Partly the more advanced arrows and pointers to help Nancy get around. Partly that the mystery itself, and Nancy's plan to solve it, isn't always clear. The player has to work through it a bit and wander. There is not a lot of "pixel hunting," but there are a lot of mental challenges. Not as much learning as Royal Tower or Scarlet Hand, but just enough to help Nancy with a few puzzles. Nancy does get to do some fun things, such as ordering and eating French food at a café and buying items from "junk" dealers.
Who will like this game? Nancy Drew Game fans will buy it. Young people who enjoy Nancy Drew books will enjoy it. And adults who are comfortable using the computer mouse and who like adventure games (with a storyline and with many puzzles that will take several minutes each to solve) will like it, too.

Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor Review

I read all of the Nancy Drew books when I was a kid, so I was intrigued when I saw that there are now computer games based on the books. Although I'm now 35, I decided to purchase a few and see how I liked them (I figured that if they were too "childish" for me, I could always give them to my niece...). However, that was not to happen, as I absolutely love playing them!
One of the best features of these games is that there's several levels to choose from - beginner to expert - and this will allow you to decide just how hard you want the game to be. The difference between the levels is the number & type of hints you get along the way.
This particular game is one of my favorites. It was actually quite difficult, and so I found it to be a wonderful challenge. The graphics are excellent, and you really get that mysterious feeling as you traverse this old, spooky castle.
If you liked reading Nancy Drew, you'll absolutely love playing these games! They are great for kids and adults alike. However, regardless of your age, if you haven't played too many Nancy Drew games, I'd recommend that you go with the beginner level for this game - if not, you may get frustrated quite easily.

Cameron Files 1 & 2 Collection Review

This game is like Riven where you move the mouse and you get a 360 degree view. The difference between this and Riven is that in Riven you have better control over the curser with the mouse. I have tried to play this game twice now and when you move the mouse the slightest bit the screen moves very fast. I am prone to motion sickness, so after a few minutes I get nauseous and have to stop playing. I have only been able to progress through the first scene but once I try navigating the hallways I start feeling nauseous. I am going to give it 3 stars because I think that it would be a fun game if I can get past the problems with the motion.

Nancy Drew: The Phantom of Venice Review

Nancy Drew: The Phantom of Venice

IF your like me you have probably played all the Nancy Drews games. (some probably more then once) but if not dont worry. The good thing about these games is you can start at any game and not feel like youve missed anything. Nancy Drew and The Phantom of Venice was a great game. I have to say out of the 18 games there are this one is in my top 5.The Story line is very exciting. An elusive phantom is stealing from Venice. He wears a mask and no one can seem to figure out who he (or she!) is! so thats why the police of Venice call on YOU as Nancy Drew to crack the case. Your undercover and ready to uncover all the secrets Venice has to offer. The characters are fun to talk to, the music is new and goes right along with the Venice theme, the puzzles and games are a challenge and the graphics have progressed so much in the last few games. If you cant wait for the game after this one there is a teaser about the next game after you finish this one...But im not going to tell you what it is! Thats something your have to sleuth out on your own!
