(More customer reviews)I have been a long time user of OmniPage, going way back to version 4. I have regularly updated every 2 years or so, often enjoying the speed or work flow improvements.
I upgraded to OmniPage 16 via an email solicitation and decided to buy it. Unfortunately after a successful install, registration, and activation, the software would not run. The splash screen would display, and then the program would end.
At this point I come face to face with Nuance support and realize I should have read the support for this product before buying. I could find nothing in the online Knowledge Base forum related to my problem. Phone support is a toll call, and requires long periods of hold, and costs $19.95 per incident (with the first one free). Email support is $9.95 per incident.
Luckily the phone support was able to solve my problem in about an hour. I had to install and run some special snooping software which gathered my system information which I mailed to the support team. Unfortunately, I have now used up my one free incident and won't pursue some of the other bugs I see. Be sure you are comfortable with this limited software support before buying.

WINzip 14 Standard 1-User Review

(More customer reviews)I've been testing the entire package of WinZip 14 (14.5) Plus for the past several weeks and I'd like to offer this review just for the main product WinZip 14, which is now WinZip 14.5 for individuals, home-based businesses or a small business office as an indispensible software that you must own.
WinZip is a file compression software that's been around for about 20 years. In fact, Corel was the company that first created the compression software know as "zip." A lot of time has passed, and a lot of other companies make compression software to send over the internet, but this product has gotten so much better that it's a no-brainer to own.
First of all, the WinZip the new version compresses file folders better than 20% of its original size. This is important because if you're sending files over the internet as an attachment to, let's say Gmail, then you have a limit as to what you can send. Gmail's attachment limit is now at 25MB. That's great if you have a file that's 25MB or less, and you're sending it to someone who has a Gmail account. What if the person you're sending it to has a different email service? On average the limit on an attachment-- sending and receiving is only 10MB. With WinZip, you can compress a large file and send it to most email accounts without it being rejected.
Second point. The free zip compression sites that have been mentioned offer good products but a couple of things to be aware of. These are donation-oriented sites. So, if the creators cannot afford to make/ update their product and something goes wrong-- there's no one to reach out to for help. That means endless hours doing Google searches for someone who may have an answer. With this inexpensive software, you can always call the toll free number during business hours to get a tech's help.
One of the reviewers also mentioned that WinZip doesn't open up older compression files...not true! I have WinZip running on WinXP via VMWare Fusion on my MacBook Pro and you have two options. You can select what WinZip calls the "legacy setting" which is a list of older file formats or you can choose the "Current" setting which gives you the active formats from the past plus the new formats that were just created. You select that when you first open up the software (or change the default settings, afterwards.)
Encryption. If you're sending files to employees who work remotely or to staff in a different location you have a choice of 8, 16, or 32 character password protection. You can send a file, then send a follow-up email with the password for that file. It's that secure.
For Fun. If you're like me and you share videos on YouTube...or music...or photographs, etc. you can create a folder and compress it and send it without it being corrupted.

Abbyy PDF Transformer 3 Review

(More customer reviews)I had a long printed document I wanted to put on my Kindle as a searchable PDF. It had a large number of Czech names and words. My scanner's OCR wasn't up to English very well, much less Czech. This program not only lets you take your document scanned into regular PDF and turn it into searchable (which the DX, at least will honor)--it also will let you use the OCR in multiple languages (a HUGE list)-- including Czech/English-- with ONE click. So now I can find words using the impenetrable Czech diacritic marks without having to type in those marks. It is simplicity to use. The interface involves: Click "Load PDF". Choose your languages. Hit "Convert." Even this Granny can figure it out.
It does have lots of other features for those techhier than I.
Then I thought: what about those books I can download as PDFs from Google Books? It did a 257 page book on Czech history in maybe 15 minutes, all set to go onto the Kindle in searchable form. It even lets me find the "Harvard" on the stamp from the book Google copied.
Most OCR programs cost upwards of $300. The one on my scanner takes forever to think about what to recognize on each page and then gets things madly wrong. This program solves the worries.
In combination with Microsoft One Note [which you already HAVE if you have Office 2007] this is a traveller's Nirvana. You can use One Note to make and organize yourself a complete guide from Wikipedia and other web sources--including pictures, up to date opening hours, history snippets, Notes to Self--whatever can be typed or copied and pasted. Then you can save it to PDF (One Note lets you do this), and use PDF Transformer to turn it into Kindle-Ready searchable form. Decent travel guides for Kindle are thin on the ground. This solves the problem. I'm ready to hit the streets of Europe in even obscure towns outside Fodor's ken with only my Kindle in tow.
PDF Transformer also apparently turns PDFs into Microsoft Office Documents, and vice versa, and people praise the old version for that (see ABBYY PDF Transformer 2.0 Pro) but I haven't tried that yet. For my immediate need-- getting documents onto a Kindle in usable form-- it is far and away the best thing I've found.

PDF Converter Professional 5.0 Review

(More customer reviews)Scansoft products used to be decent products with strong support. That was before Nuance bought them out. Since capturing a basic monopoly on Voice to text, Text to Voice, scan to text, and PDF conversion, the company has grown arrogant, and less customer oriented than Microsoft at their worst. As one reviewer wrote, they charge you for customer support. The process goes something like this.
You visit the web page, and if you product is the current generation, or one prior, (it doesn't matter, current gen get treated no better)you have to enter in your license/product code, enter in your credit card number, and agree to be charged $9.95 for a totally useless email experience that only allows you access to their support page when you get a reply. My most recent experience involves Omnipage Pro, which has PDF converter and Creator built in. Omnipage Pro is such a slow and practicality useless program, that I uninstalled it after a week. However, a need came up where I needed a PDF converter, so I thought I'd load that part of the software.
I ran set up, used custom, had PDF creator and Converter installed leaving out the scanner software, entered in my key code, started the program, was asked if I wanted to activate the software, I did, however it wouldn't let me, telling me the license code was not valid. I attempted to find the problem/solution in their knowledge base, but don't bother, there is little if anything in there other than contact technical support.
So off to techincal support I went, only to discover that even for an installation problem, I had to pay. I did, after two days I got a response, telling me they needed my license code. As I'd had to enter it to get to the support page, this was irritating but I went to the webpage since they do no allow you to just hit respond. Entered in the key and two days later got another message telling me that my key code was for Omnipage Pro, not PDF converter. Gee, thanks for telling me that since I had to go to the Omnipage section to begin my initial inquiry.
I tried rewording my request, stating I have OmniPage pro, with comes with PDF creater and PDF Converter, and only wanted Converter to install, however it rejects my key code. Another two days pass, I get an emailed response telling me I don't have the proper code for PDF converter, mine is for Omnipage Pro. Again, I was grateful for the insight.
Back to the website, asked if there was anyway I could just install the portion of Omnipage that had the separate PDF. After more than a week passed, I get an email, telling me that I must install the entire program, register it, activate it, than I can uninstall the Omnipage pro leaving the PDF converter.
Following the instruction, I load the entire program, activate it, test PDF converter which works, go to add and remove, PDF creater and converter are listed separate from Omnipage,so I uninstall it per the directions of the last email. I go to use the PDF converter, it asks me if I want to activate it, (which I'd already done, but what the heck)it asks me for my key code, which I enter, only to get back a reply the key code I've entered is not valid.
Back to the website, explain the problem, and surprise, the response after two days is "your key code is not valid for PDF converter, only for Omnipage".
I give up, decide I'll just load the entire program and live with Omnipage taking up room. I install the entire program, enter the key code, asked to activate, which I do, only to get a message the key code is not valid as I've already installed Omnipage previously. Back to the webpage. set out the problem. A week goes by, I get a response asking me for the key code, and a screen shot, and a copy of the receipt. I supplied all, and am still waiting for a response.
My advice, stay away from all nuance programs. I've spent close to two hundred dollars for a Pro version of a product, received no free customer support, and after wasting more than two weeks, still have no product to run.
