(More customer reviews)I love this program. It can be used as a stand alone or VST. The user interface is extremely intuitive, making the learning curve quite palatable. The program gives you a virtual environment with a highly customizable piano. Virtual sliders are used to customize the many components of a piano - string length, tuning, sympathetic resonance (something you can't get from samples), hammer noise... the list goes on and on.
You can download a free demo of this program from Modartt's website. Should you want to kick the tires, here is my formula for success: Start with the Grand M3 patch Flamenco sketches. Switch the output to binaural and stick the "virtual" headphones about where Bill Evans would keep his head when playing (if you don't know anything about Bill Evans find a picture of him at the piano on the internet and check out his music). Reset the EQ to flat and close the piano lid to start. Next, open the piano lid a little bit at a time and move the head phones around a bit to adjust tone (instead of messing with the EQ).
The area where you set velocity will graphically show you how hard you are press the keys/what velocity signal your keyboard is sending. I have found that by adjusting the velocity curve, you can adjust the attack and percussiveness to perfection (add nodes to the velocity line by clicking in it and drag the nodes around to adjust the curve). If you don't do this, the piano may sound too dull and leave you scratching your head.
Finally, you will need an ASIO driver to eliminate latency problems (a lag time from when you press a key and the program sounding) ASIO4ALL is available for free on the internet and works great.
Combining this program with one of the latest generation lower cost 88 key graded hammer action keyboards out there will give you a high quality low cost setup that wasn't available until very recently in the history of mankind.
