NTI Media Maker 8 badly messed up my computer. Immediately after installation I began to receive a Media Center Receiver Service error that repeatedly flashed on my screen every 4 or 5 seconds, making my computer unusable until, in between flashes, I was able to uninstall the program. But then I found that the uninstall was not complete. It failed to remove a dll that interfered with other CD burning programs on my computer. I could not even reinstall my old NTI CD&DVD Maker 7 program and get it to work correctly.
I sent off a panic email to NTI tech services, and after a day passed without a response, I called. The technician had me email her the appcompat.txt from the Media Center Receiver Service error in order to help her (I thought) discover what was causing the problem. During the next week I sent 2 emails asking when I might hear from her, and did not receive a response. On the seventh day I called. She informed me (these are her words exactly) "I have been overwhelmed with work and have not been able to look at the file." This lack of service is not acceptable. I asked for a refund, and the administrative assistant at customer service said she would request a full refund, since I had not received any service. Her office manager turned the request down, saying the problem was "specific to my computer" and thus the company had no responsibility.
The Media Center Receiver Service error (with the appcompat.txt file) was sent to Microsoft automatically when it was flashing on my screen, and I contacted Microsoft directly myself to make sure technical support there was really aware of the problem. Apparently Media Maker 8 is incompatible with Microsoft Media Center (which came with my version of Windows XP). Microsoft was "sorry" that I was having the problem with Media Maker 8.
It took me considerable time to correct the problem that NTI Media Maker 8 created in my computer. So my advice to you is, if you are intent on trying this program, don't pay for it in advance! Go to the NTI website and download the trial version to see if it will work on your setup before you pay. Otherwise, any refund, if requested, will be less "a 10% transaction fee" plus any shipping charges. While this is not a major sum of money, it is in my opinion an unethical business practice, especially in view of the company's failure to acknowledge the program's issues and lack of technical support. Your real problems may begin if Media Maker 8 doesn't work correctly, your computer is messed up, you don't know yourself how to restore it to its original condition, and you try to get timely technical support. I have left a record of my experience with the BBB in Irvine, CA where NTI is located.
