I'm the treasurer for the Cub Scouts and needed something very basic to keep track of the kids' information. This fit the bill. I'm a systems analyst, and I've designed and worked with many databases over 25 years. I also teach basic SQL classes, so I was hesitant to buy a $6 database program.
I was pleasantly surprised. It was very easy to work with. It has a lot of nice features, like the ability to change the database design at any time, and pre-designed forms. There are a couple of minor bugs, like the report headings are centered no matter what, and selecting Left justify doesn't work at all. But this is a great basic program that accomplishes what I needed it for, for very little money.
Later note: After working with it longer, I have figured out the headings.

Crazy Machines 2 Review

Crazy Machines 2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After all the negative reviews from folks who did not have the hardware to run this game, I thought it would be helpful to have a review from somebody who has actually played it for a while. In a nutshell, this game is awesome--both for adults and kids. The graphics and gameplay are a huge improvement over versions 1.0 and 1.5, which themselves were fantastic games. My 7-year-old son and I are addicts already.
I have collected some observations about the game that I hope will be helpful to prospective purchasers.
NATURE OF THE GAME
Version 2.0 follows the same basic format as the earlier incarnations of Crazy Machines. You are given a challenge (e.g., put this ball in that basket) and provided a set of elements (e.g., gears, belts, motors, explosives, ramps) to complete the task by building Rube Goldberg--or, for the modern generation, Wallace and Gromit--contraptions.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
Other reviewers were right that this game demands a lot from system hardware. But that is a double-edged sword. On one hand, users with older, slower machines, will not be able to play it. On the other hand, users with newer computers will enjoy dramatically improved graphics and physics modeling (see below).
My computer runs CM2 just fine. I have a year-and-a-half old Dell with a Core2Duo 1.9 GHz. Not a screaming powerhouse of a computer, by any measure. I do, however, have a new graphics card, which uses an Nvidia 8800 GeForce GT chip. This is a good--but by no means top-of-the-line--graphics card. I am running it on Vista Home Basic 32 bit with 4 GB of memory. I also have an older Pentium IV running XP that will not load the game. I do not have the Ageia Physx card that the game recommends.
The bottom line is that you should not expect CM2 to run on your kids' old hand-me-down computers. But if you have purchased a system within the last year or so, it will probably work just fine on it.
IMPROVED ELEMENTS AND PHYSICS.
Like versions 1.0 and 1.5, you solve puzzles by putting elements together. This is done largely by affixing them to a lab wall.
The arsenal of elements has been hugely expanded in version 2.0. I have not counted them, but I think there are around 150, ranging from simple devices like ropes and weights to more complex elements like voltage regulators, televisions, toasters, cannons, gear shafts, transmission boxes, etc.
Some of the elements are broken down into components. For example, you assemble a switch by connecting a switch base--which has the power input and output--to the actual switching device (e.g., a mechanical, motion-sensitive, laser activated switch). Likewise, the CM2 robot can be assembled in various ways. This componentization effectively expands the number of elements well beyond the 150 or so standard ones.
The elements look and behave much, much, more realistically than in earlier versions. They are rendered beautifully in three dimensions. Most of the elements have a weathered abused-in-the-lab-for-years look to them. Many of them consist of multiple moving parts.
Unlike prior versions, the game now works with the scroll wheel on your mouse, so you can zoom in to look at the elements of your project. Once zoomed in, you can easily move over to an adjacent part of the project (by clicking and holding the scroll wheel while moving the mouse). Even better, you can change the perspective (by pressing the Alt key while clicking and holding down the scroll wheel and moving the mouse). This way, you can look at parts of your project from all angles. Doing this really makes the three-dimensionality of the game pop out.
The elements now behave more like their real-world counterparts. Ropes break when put under too much stress. Candles burn down. Batteries die. Bottles shatter realistically. Wooden boxes splinter apart when dropped. The list goes on and on. This addition of realistic physics really enhances the gameplay.
Viewing the improved graphics and physics, I can see why the game is more taxing on computers than earlier versions. This is unfortunate for those who wish to use it on older systems. But for my money, it is well worth it. In any event, Moore's law means that this will become less and less a problem over time.
GAMEPLAY
You proceed through the game by solving puzzles. The main game consists of a set of 150 puzzles that are organized into different "chapters" containing 10 games each. The overall theme is a "world tour," with each chapter containing graphics and music from a particular part of the world. For example, there is a Greece chapter, with ancient columns and statues, an Alaska chapter with log cabins an moose antlers, and Egypt chapter, etc. The puzzles themselves are loosely tied to the theme. There also is an introductory chapter that teaches you how to use the game and many of its elements.
As one would expect, the puzzles go from easier to harder. You have to solve most--but not all--of the puzzles of a given chapter to proceed to the next chapter. Within a chapter, you may solve the puzzles in any order you like. That way, if you get stuck, you can go to another puzzle within the chapter. This is a welcome improvement over 1.0 and 1.5, which only let you proceed one puzzle at a time--causing frustration when you got stuck.
Another improvement over 1.0 and 1.5 is the addition of subsidiary goals. For each puzzle, there is a main goal (e.g., put the ball in the basket), and a subsidiary goal (e.g., also pop the balloon and turn on the light). You are given different medals depending on whether you accomplish the subsidiary goals. The addition of these subsidiary goals means that the game is more accessible to players of various skill levels. You don't have to accomplish all the subsidiary goals to get to the next chapter. So less-skilled players still will be able to advance through the game without getting too frustrated.
Finally, CM2 offers hints--both verbal and visual (you can briefly glimpse a portion of the planned layout). The game limits the number of hints you can get for a given puzzle, and you lose points when you ask for hints.
In short, the game allows you to be as challenged as you want to be. The refinements in gameplay solve a major problem from the earlier version--getting stuck and not being able to move on to a different unsolved puzzle.
MY LAB
In addition to solving the puzzles designed by the game, you can create your own puzzles--or just tinker around with the various elements--in the "My Lab" section. In this section, you devise your own experiments and are given the full range of elements to do so (except for those that need to be "unlocked").
Devising an experiment is straightforward. You put the elements in place, identify which elements are locked (i.e., fixed in place for the solver), and identify the "targets" of the experiment (i.e., what needs to be done in order to solve the puzzle). You can test your experiment at each stage, to see whether it works.
This is a fantastic aspect of the game. It basically enables you to extend the game indefinitely beyond the 150 puzzles included in the game. With the game's new internet capabilities (see below), you can share your new puzzles with users from around the world. And you can attempt to solve puzzles that they create.
INTERNET CAPABILITIES
New to Crazy Machines in version 2.0 is the ability to share problems and solutions with other CM2 users via the Internet. You can create an online CM2 identity, which enables you to (1) look at other players' solutions to the 150 puzzles (after you have solved it), (2) upload your solutions to the problem, (3) post new experiments for others to solve, and (4) solve experiments that others can solve.
The internet interface is relatively easy to navigate. Because the game is new, there currently is not much content on the web. But with time and the development of a CM2 community, I expect that this will become a major addition to the game.
FUN QUOTIENT
In case it is not apparent from the above discussion, the game is great fun. And its appeal transcends age. I am a 38-year-old lawyer and I play it with my 7-year-old son. I don't know who enjoys it more. It also is a game where parents and children can play together, as equals.
Notwithstanding all that fun, it also is educational. It encourages creative problem solving and also introduces the users to fundamental facts about gravity, mechanics, electricity, light--and how to convert one of these forms of energy into another. I really wish that such a thing existed when I was a (younger) child.
CONCLUSION
I have been waiting over a year for CM2 to come out. It was scheduled for release in 2007, but came out only recently. I was not disappointed. In fact, the CM2 exceeds my expectations. In addition to the greatly improved graphics, the expanded arsenal of elements, and the improved physics, the game adds new aspects to the gameplay--like hints and internet collaboration--that greatly improve its playability.
As for those worried about the performance their current system, I would advise them to take a $20 gamble. The worst-case scenario is that CM2 is unplayable now, but will be playable when you next upgrade your system. It will be just as fun a year from now.

I have been working as a sound designer for almost twenty years and finally a program arrived that delivers everything I ever wanted (excluding midi). The problem with most digital audio software is working within their idea of a workflow. SOUNDTRACK PRO allows me to manipulate and experiment with audio the way a graphic designer works with images. Better writers than I have elaborated on the details so I direct you to Len Sasso's article in the September 2005 Electronic Musician magazine. You can read it online.
Check this one out. It has been a long time since I looked forward to opening a program when it was time to work. No telling how many ideas I would explore that day!

Supreme Ruler 2020 Review

Supreme Ruler 2020
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The biggest cons are:
-fastest game speed setting is almost unplayable when at peace. You will find yourself sitting for hours to make it through 1 game year. While when in war the slowest game mode isnt quite slow enough, this is not as big of deal as the game can be paused.
-The AI is awful. They don't use their assests properly. I was playing as Afganastan and got invaded by Iran, they only invade with like 3 tanks 2 inf divisions, did not use any aircraft. Their tanks would stop as they ran out of gas from under supply. Needless to say wars are generally retarded.
-Flat out missing some of the options where supposed to be in the game. Some of the smaller but noticable ones: No avatars (your rulers pic is a black outline of a person and you cant change it), tourism while mentioned in the game and manual is completly static (does not change or develop)
Some Pros:
If these two above things were fixed I would give this game 5 stars.
-I thought the interface was well layed out for a complex game; kinda reminded me of a beefed up Simcity 3000 interface.
-Good economic, trade, political models.
-Tons of units.
-Research seemed to have actual impact on aspects of the game.
I like a lot of other Paradox games (Victoria, HOI1 and 2, EU1 and 2) and I wanted to like this one, but could not force myself. I would recommened checking out Paradox forums after more patching and mods have been done to correct some of these issues, before purchasing this game.

Apple Final Cut Studio (Mac DVD) Review

Apple Final Cut Studio (Mac DVD)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This rather heavy box contains Final Cut Pro 5, Soundtrack Pro, Motion 2, DVD Studio Pro 4 & Shake 4 and lots and lots of books (my kind of packaging). My old Final Cut Pro 4 books have lots of places bookmarked with stickies. I know that you can use the help menu on the computer but for those of us who do like to curl up with a good manual I was in heaven. The box has a total of eight books. Five of them are for Final Cut Pro the others are for Motion 2, Soundtrack Pro and DVD Studio Pro 4.
You have to invest both time and hard drive space for this software. I didn't install all of the extras that came in the box, but I did install quite a bit. To install all of the bells and whistles you would need about 41GB. I installed partial which used only 21GB which is still a hard drive hog.
While there were many great programs that came in the box I will only focus on Final Cut Pro 5.
What comes new for Final Cut Pro:
- "Multicamera Editing Using Multiclips". This allows you to group together multiple clips as separate angles and switch back and forth between the clips in real time. You can have up to 128 angles but only the first 16 can be played back in real time. This worked great for my multi-camera projects.
- You can now capture, edit and output native MPEG-2 HDV video plus 720p30, 720p60, 1080i60 & 1080i50 formats. Using supported USB or FireWire you can import and export native DV, DVCPRO & DVCPRO 50 footage from Panasonic P2 cards all without any generation loss.
- Apple Professional Application Integration has a new "Send to Menu" which allows you to select one or more clips in your project and open them in other Apple Pro applications such as Shake 4, Soundtrack Pro and Motion 2.
- You can embed Motion and LiveType projects directly into your Final Cut projects and edit them like any other clip in your timeline.
- You can also process audio in your Final Cut project using Soudtrack Pro by editing nondestructively or destructively using the Waveform Editor. When you make changes to Soundtrack audio that is embedded in a Final Cut project the audio in your Final Cut project is updated immediately.
- Interface Enhancements, allow you to now change the text display size in the Browser and Timeline. A new customized keyboard layout for real-time multicamera editing is also included. Plus new button bars for common workflows like Multiclip, Media Logging & Audio Editing.
- Rendering of "Still Images" & "Generator Performance" are now rendered to a "Constant Frames" folder which is stored in the current "Render Files" on your scratch disk which helps playback performance significantly.
- RT Extreme & Real-Time Playback: allows you to manually adjust the video quality (high, medium or low) and playback frame rate (full, half, quarter) to reduce CPU load so you can increase the number of simultaneous real-time effects.
Dynamic Real-Time Playback: Where Final Cut can automatically adjust video quality, frame rate or both on a frame-by-frame basis during playback thus allowing you to get the best real-time performance.
Limiting the Data Rate of Real-Time Playback: Is useful when you have more video streams that your hard disk is capable of playing back. This would be helpful to those who media is stored on a (SAN) storage area network or if your scratch disk has a low data rate, such as 4200 rpm which is the case with some PowerBooks and portable FireWire drives.
Unlimited Real-Time Playback Enhanced: If you choose the "Unlimited RT" option from the RT pop-menu in the Timeline you can preview more effects than previously available. The engine has been enhanced to support playback for effects that were previously unplayable, such as Motion & LiveType clips.
- Audio: MIDI Control Surface Support allows you to precisely control fader levels and pan settings simultaneously, instead of adjusting faders one at a time. You can control whether or not audio beeps are heard when unrendered audio tracks are played back.
- Log and Capture: You can now capture up to 24 audio channels at the same time. The Log & Capture window allows you to choose which audio channels you capture and whether audio channels are captured as mono channels or stereo pairs.
- Scratch Disks, Xsan & Network Support: The Directory & File Permission supports scratch disks on storage area networks such as Xsan. All UNIX file permissions are obeyed, allowing you to carefully control read & write access for multiple Final Cut Pro editing systems connected to the SAN.
Each time Final Cut is opened it searches any computers on your LAN for easy setups, plug-ins, window & keyboard layouts, button bars, etc... Which allows you to install settings and preset files in only one location and share them with all other editing systems on the network.
Capture Now no longer preallocates disk space so now media files grow as they are written and there is no longer a waiting period before Capture Now operation begins.
- Media Management: There is a faster reconnect feature to your media files. You can also reveal a clip's media file directly in the "Finder". The Media Manager can process the latest supported video formats, including DVCPRO, HD, HDV & IMX.
- Film Editing and Cinema Tools: Clips in Final Cut can be linked directly to a Cinema Tools database. So whenever you make changes to your Cinema Tools database you can update the associated clip in Final Cut.
You can import "Telecine Logs" directly into Final Cut and associate the clips with a Cinema Tools database that is created automatically. Final Cut Pro supports feet + frame units in the Timeline ruler and timecode fields throughout the application.
As with most programs today there are many ways of getting help. With Final Cut you can use the onscreen help menu or one of the 5 manuals that ships with the program. Personally I like to use the manuals.
The program itself has a bit of a learning curve. If you have used other editing programs before you will pick it up fairly quickly. I was a heavy PhotoShop user before I started using Final Cut and I noticed that many of the concepts are the same in how things are laid out and how there are many ways to get to the same point according to your work style.
The first book "Getting Started" is a great book for someone that has not used the program before. It gives great insight on the Post Production process and how to best keep your work flow efficient:
- Planning is the first thing you should do before you start shooting or at least before you start editing.
- Setting up your editing system should only have to happen once when you first start working on your project. For most systems today you just have to attach your video camera to your computer and you are ready. I have my system setup with my digital camera, connected to a dedicated TV which is attached to a stereo VCR/DVD combo.
- Logging, capturing & importing: This step is mostly style driven. Some people prefer to dump all of the material off their tapes onto their hard drive instead of going through the tape before hand and just "logging" in what you would like to have in your project. I usually go through my tapes in front of my TV with my laptop and get the time codes and make a description of the scene. Next "Capture" your footage. I just go to the in and out points and capture just the images I want. By just capturing what I want I save on hard drive space. You can also "Import" QuickTime movies, audio and graphics files, such as a music track from a CD, a still image, or a layered Photoshop file.
- Editing your project this also can vary according to your style. You can drag all of the clips into the Timeline then start cleaning them up and adding transitions or you can clean them up as you pull them in. Me I drag what I need into the Timeline, fine tune, add my music then add my transitions.
- Mixing & sweeting audio this is where you can clean up your dialogue (you know when the annoying plate clatter at that important point in a presentation), add sound effects, music or voiceover and make adjustments to the mixing levels to make a more harmonious sound to your audio. You can set Final Cut to default to Sound Track Pro for additional audio editing. I love working in Soundtrack Pro because I can view my project in a mini-screen as I add the music to the sections I want.
- Adding effects and titles can be very time consuming which is why it's a good idea to have most of your project laid out and almost done before you start adding the effects. You can change the speed of a clip, create a motion clip, adjust your colors and many other touches to give your project that polished feel of a professional.
- Outputting and distributing your project is your last step. Final Cut Pro provides you with a variety of output options. You can create a video tape or export it to a DVD authoring program such as DVD Studio Pro or another DVD program or you can make a mini movie and place it on the web.
When you open Final Cut for the first time you will be prompted to choose and "Easy Setup" which will determine how Final Cut works with your editing system. Go to "User Preferences" where there are six folder tabs to chose from. The first tab is "General" this is where you can setup the number of "Undo's" you would like (we all LOVE undo) how many "Recent Clips" you would like to be displayed, setup your "Real-time Audio mixes, how often you would like to have a copy "Auto Save" and many other things that affect the general feel of your workspace.

FileMaker Pro 5.5 Review

I am used to using Excel and Access to satisfy my database needs. Most of the time I simply need to create a sheet to print labels on. I'm always amazed by the excruciating amount of time Excel and Access require to do this task.
Filemaker is so much easier. It's intuitive, straightforward, and easy to manipulate. I was able to create my own personal database template within thirty minutes of being introduced to the program. It's that straightforward. It's sort and search utilities are clean and easy to use, as is it's label program. A friend recommended this program to me as the ultimate consumer database tool, and I agree.
The best ever!

FileMaker Pro combines powerful information management and surprising ease of use. It handles all business data-management needs, including job tracking, asset management, inventory, customer information, and payroll, over the company intranet, local area networks (LANs), or even wired or wireless handhelds.
This version of FileMaker Pro has many enhancements based on input from users, IT management, and third-party developers. It can now query databases based on field, and features a new Execute SQL script step, as well as a revamping of the Instant Web Publishing that allows users to publish in the same format as their FileMaker Pro files, without writing any code.
The Web Companion translates a number of multistep scripts, providing a high degree of fidelity between PC-hosted FileMaker Pro databases and those published on the Web. You can also import specific-named ranges of Microsoft Excel data, a useful feature if there is more than one row of description or label data above the actual datasheet data to be imported. With a new multithreaded, built-in HTTP server, the processing capability of FileMaker Pro delivers faster response times for all requests including static data and image displays. Web Companion now supports buttons in headers and footers, sorting by clicking column headers and uniform row heights.
This version will enable data access control to individual records: users can specify comprehensive calculation formulae to restrict browsing, editing, or deleting records, based on the user's password. A new interface has been introduced so that FileMaker Server guests can now remain connected even if they have been idle. This prevents users from being disconnected from a file that is being hosted on the Internet by a client that is being used as a Web server.

The Godfather (DVD-ROM) Review

The Godfather (DVD-ROM)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Do not be fooled by the moderately good reviews by the gaming press.
This game is far worse than the reviews might lead you to believe. I was certainly fooled.
I got the impression that it would be a fun game (though none too original) that made good use of the franchise. That's fine by me.
In reality it is far from fine.
I have to mention I am a PC gamer, so when I say the graphics are generally awful in this game maybe that impression is a result of my high end PC gaming background (I am currently enjoying Oblivion with all settings maxed).
It could well be that the graphics are fine if your a PS2 or xbox gamer, I dunno everyone has their own standard.
Compared to GTA SA this weird "console port" (weird in that it seems to have hit the stores in its PC version first) completely fails to take advantage of the advanced effects that are possible today.
With GTA SA with all settings maxed on PC, I have a very beautiful looking gameworld to play around in.
In this case however, there is virtually no scalabilty, you are pretty much stuck with the standard console look.
Which means - no lighting or shading worth mentioning, ugly cartoon shadows that exist independ of any light source, ugly (huge) blocky textures and clippy paper thin (endlessly repeatative) environments.
New York is a boring wallpaper maze filled with toy cars that have no texturing or bodywork effects - just different colours (hard to believe for a recent game).
I should say that the animations and the cut scenes are top notch and the likenesses of some of the original actors from the film work well.
It's well done in the same way a good puppetshow can be. You are impressed how they managed to breath life into such stiff and non-lifelike models.
The people milling about are well done within these same limited margins, they are in no way lifelike.
They also lack any sense of graphical style that might make up for that, so in the end you have well enough animated, but boring generic stickmen streetwalkers.
Gameplay.
In the same way the graphics fall short of the style and invention of GTA save a few high points (animations and likenesses), so does the gameplay.
This GTA clone is really no fun at all. Think of GTA done badly and there you go, with the exception of a pretty nice fighting system.
When the gameplay is generally so unispired though, being able to beat folk up with such florish and detail is wasted.
Kinda like the reverse of GTA were the gameplay is so good you forgive the simplistic fight system.
The car handling gives no feel that this is actually a heavy hunk of metal you are controlling, they just wiz about the streets, the last nail in the coffin for any period feel this game hoped to inspire in the player.
The GTA lean towards gameplay at the expense of realism is obviously aimed at here, but there is no balance struck, you just have a limited stock of ugly generic cars that are just as boring to drive as they are to look at.
As far as the story and missions go, what's the point when the basic guts of the game is so inferior?
In the end it seems it was a really bad idea to mix together such an over the top arcade gameplay style (and a pretty poor one at that) with such a serious and realistic plot.
You have a detailed and nuanced story here, but I am not someone that puts story before gameplay. The Godfather score is stiring, but it is not enough to stop me knowing just how empty of atmosphere this rendering of 1950/40's New York really is.
A true turkey that needs to be outed. Has EA become so powerful that people fear to tell the truth about a game that cost the company millions to licence, or have they enough money to ensure favourable reviews when it counts? Hard to believe.
But it's harder for me to believe how kind the reviews have been for this turd.
Just be cautous before you waste your money like I did, the press let me down badly.

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn Review

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Its graphics may be a bit dated (they were even when the game came out) but if you can look beyond that, this is one seriously awesome collection. Baldur's Gate 2 has incredible RPG depth, a strong tactical aspect, and great replay value. The expansion is bigger than most, and adds significant epic-level capabilities for your characters.
The game picks up several years after the events in Baldur's Gate, and continues the plot. If you didn't play that first game (a shame- go get it) there are a few quick recaps of the key points. You can play in single play mode, in which case you make your one main character (or import from Baldur's Gate); multiplay with just you, in which you can make your whole party; or multiplay with friends, in which everyone can make and control one or more characters. In any case, your party has up to six people at a time, and you can dismiss or add characters at will.
Add to this a whole lot of classes, including special 'kits' that are akin to 3rd edition prestige classes (save that you can take them immediately) and you have a whole lot of room for party customization. There's a host of NPCs that can join your party, some better than others, but all very interesting and with unique (sometimes very extensive) side quests. You can have romantic relationships with some of these potential party members, and some will even have romances with other NPCs.
Almost all of the dialogue in the game is spoken, and although there's not much full motion video, when there is it's well done. The plot advances through chapters, and there are numerous side quests that take you to many varied game world locations. The rewards for some of these quests are awesome, and some of the monsters you'll run into are equally so. This is where the tactics come in- your party composition is crucial for winning these big fights. For example, dealing with that red dragon is going to be exceedingly difficult without some protection from fire and fear effects. There are also many ways to solve the various problems you run into. For example, a thief laying some traps in a doorway can turn a tough band of charging enemies into so much cannon fodder. Then again, if you don't have a thief or aren't a very subtle type, you can just fireball the lot of them and clean up what's left with a good old-fashioned sword charge.
I mentioned earlier that the graphics are dated. This is true, but it doesn't really detract from the play. The area backgrounds are actually very nice, though also largely static. Spell effects look decent, if less flashy than newer games like Neverwinter Nights. The music and voice acting are also top-notch, and don't get old even after many times through the game (which is likely to happen once you get hooked). The latter in particular really lends character to the people you meet. It's a testament to the developer's success in this regard that you'll have strongly varied feelings toward nearly all of the NPCs- just as you would expect of real people.
As for the story, it is superb. The scope is truly epic, and the side quests actually interesting. This is more than can be said about much of Neverwinter Nights, for all of the polish and vaunted expandability of that title. Though generally linear, the campaign doesn't seem to be linear. When replaying, though you'll be going to the same places and doing the same things, the different characters you have along will make it seem like a different game. There's also a ton of secrets and hidden areas- you might just find something you didn't see before.
That said, it's worth mentioning that although there are no official tools for editing the game, there are unofficial ones. These have been put to good effect, and there's a host of mods and add-ons available for free download. There's even a mod that converts the interface to Icewind Dale's more attractive look (though you must have that game for it to work) and thus significantly improves the graphics and changes the somewhat clunky 2nd edition rules to 3rd edition.
I think the value of this title can be summed up by the fact that I played it through at least 5 times, which is something I've only done for two or three other games (the original Baldur's Gate being one of them). Even if you're not into D&D, don't particularly care for RPGs, and don't give a hoot about Forgotten Realms, this game comes highly recommended.

BitDefender Total Security 2011 Value Edition - 3 PC/2 year Review

BitDefender Total Security 2011 Value Edition - 3 PC/2 year
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had heard great things about bitdefender from my parents, who have it on their computer and have had no major issues with it, so I decided to give it a try. This was the worst decision I've ever made when it comes to anti virus software. I have had Norton, Mcafee, PC Security Shield, and Kaspersky. All of which have been pretty friendly to my pc. Bitdefender was not so kind.
I started off by trying to install it onto my computer (run on Windows xp-32 bit). Once it scanned and I got things going it suggested that I remove all my other antivirus software, ok. I proceeded to hit next to allow it to remove the software for me and all of the sudden error messages began popping up. It kept saying things like bitdefender has encountered an error and must close, you must restart your computer. I restarted only to come to a blue error screen saying my computer has shut down to prevent further damage. I restarted and hit f8 to run in safe mode, did a system restore, and tried again. Same result.
So I gave up on my computer and went to my wife's laptop with Vista. Same error messages same prompts to restart etc. Once I finally got her computer to accept the software I restarted and now faced the problem of NOTHING working. Her entire computer froze, nothing would open or do anything. I even had a hard time getting the task manager to open. So by this time I'm already frustrated and I give up on her pc and go back to mine. I did another system restore and left my computer run without protection.
I hadn't completed the full registration of my product so I had to contact customer service via email. It took them 4 days to get back to me with my problem only to instruct me to do a system dump of my information so they could analyze it. I did what they asked and waited another 4-5 days. Another email. I followed the instructions exactly in the email and encountered the same exact issues, I just took different steps to get there.
I decided to give it one more chance. I went through with the complete registration and confirmed through my email, so I could at least earn the privelage of contacting them by phone!! This wasn't much better. All 3 times I called I spoke with someone I could barely understand and had to ask "what?" several times. I followed through with everything they told me to do in the first phone call.....computer crash. So I call back again....crash. So I call back again, they tell me to do the same things again, like I didn't hear them the first time, and treat me like I'm computer illiterate.
Finally I decided to just try things on my own again using the files they had given me to download and install. I tried one more time to install the product and ignored all the error messages and the computer prompts to restart my computer. I completed the installation and ran all the clean ups through bit defender, got everything turned on and updated, and then I closed out of everything and restarted my computer manually. SUCCESS!! So far so good, I have restarted 5 times successfully and have not had any major issues.
THIS HAS BEEN A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE. I've read reviews online about how awesome BitDefender's customer service is. I beg to differ. I should have stuck with Kaspersky. I now have a 3 PC package that cost me almost 70 dollars that I barely got to work on one Computer. I'm not even going to try to go through this again on my wife's laptop.
I hope this helps anyone considering buying this product. I would definitely not reccommend.

LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars Review

LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the 4th installment in the LEGO Star Wars Franchise, after a 6 month delay on releasing the game (It was originally slated for a Late September 2010 release) those who have been a fan of Lego's Flag Ship Series Lego Star Wars you will not be disappointed. This new chapter in the Lego Star Wars starts off half way through "Attack of the Clones" were Ben, Anakin, and Padme' are to fight for their lives in Count Dooka's Arena against his assortment of savage beasts. This is more or less a revamp and redux of the original Lego Star Wars episode "Jedi Battle" that has been given a complete face lift (Take a Bow George) and is closer to the elements in the movie. From there you will continue to make your way thru a few more "redux" chapters of "Attack of the Clone's" into the "Clone Wars" T.V. Series.
Game Play:
Don't worry, The Game play is the same as in the previous Lego Star Wars Games with new features to include scenarios in which players can command large armies of clones to battle against droid armies, and Story Swap mode, in which players can switch between two characters in different areas whose stories run simultaneously. The game includes split screen combat. All new character features include lightsaber throwing, lightsaber slicing, picking up droids and stepping on certain pads in which Jedi do "combo moves" to destroy certain objects. Vehicle levels have been upgraded slightly: now, players can land their ship and begin fighting on foot. All the original elements in previous Lego Star Wars games have returned. The classic "hub" has also been changed, taking place in a Republic Cruiser named the Resolute, allowing the characters to explore all the parts of the Star Wars galaxy.
Game Graphics:
The Best way to describe the graphics is taking a standard Def DVD of the original Lego Star War Games and reprocessing them into Blu-Ray Hi-Def. The characters are amazingly clearer and smoothed out. The back ground elements are just astounding. The game engine used by the previous Lego Star Wars games has been upgraded. It can now hold more than 200 moving units/objects on-screen. The graphics are more detailed than before, and the lighting has been improved to enhance the feeling of depth.
System Requirements:
Unfortunately with all this Greatness that has been added to this game the requirements are almost twice of the 1st two...
Minium Requirements:
CPU:Intel P4 2.24 GHz or AMD Athlon 64
RAM:1 GB RAM
VGA:256 MB Video Memory with Shader 3.0 support; ATI Radeon X1300 / NVIDIA GeForce FX 5800 /Intel GMA 3-Series
DX:DirectX 9.0c
OS:Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista® SP2, or Windows 7
Ideal Requirements:
CPU:Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6 GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 1.8 GHz
RAM:2 GB RAM
VGA:512 MB Video Memory with Shader 3.0 support; ATI Radeon HD 2900 / NVIDIA GeForce 9800
DX:DirectX 10
OS:Windows Vista® SP2 or Windows 7
I've played it on my HP Pavilion DVT8 Notebook with excellent results, the system specs are as follows...
I7 Core 1.6GHz processor
NVida 1 GB Notebook Video Card
4 GB of RAM
Built-in 18.4inch 1080P Monitor
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (64 Bit)

I also tried it on my sons Desktop to see if the minimum requirements would support a P4 3.4 HT GHz (478 socket) which it did surprisingly well...
P4 3.4 HT GHz (478 socket) processor
ATI 3850HD 512mb Video Card (AGP)
4 GB of RAM
ASUS 24inch LCD-LED 1080p Monitor
Windows 7 Professional SP1 (32 Bit)
I would not go to much lower than my Son's Desktop for continued game enjoyment.
Overall, this is a excellent game for almost all ages (I would not let any child under 6 play this game due to some of the more violent scenes in the game) and an excellent entry into the Lego Star Wars Franchise. You'll spend hours reliving and enjoying the fun you had with the original Lego Star War Games.

Mafia II Review

Mafia II
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is a game with all the trappings of a hit that was to go down smooth - only to turn out the hit was nothing but a setup. And the supposed marks are the ones pulling the strings. Would a made man allow this to happen?
THREADBARE UNDERSHIRTS UNDER FLASHY SILK SUITS
The first thing that grabs you is how dull the graphics look once the (well-done) cinematics end. On top of that, it is not that the environments are badly designed, it is that the same patterns are used over and over resulting in...chain deja-vue episodes. This cookie-cutter approach could had made it easier to get lost - unfortunately, there is not even a chance for that.
FOLLOW THE SCRIPT OR ELSE, CAPICE?
If you enjoyed the freedom experienced in the GTA series, well, do not expect anything close to that degree of sandbox roaming. This a linear game only set on an open-looking background. Which, once more, shows that looks were considered more important than substance. And if you make a mistake and have to reload, be prepared to replay quite a long sequence because this is yet another game with only an autosaving option - and, once more, 2K behaves as if autosaving points are charged by the unit.
JUST KEEP MAKING THE ROUNDS PAISANO!
The next disappointment is how repetitive the gameplay itself is. "Great fighting mechanics" means all of two options: hitting or backstepping. Whereas, "realistic driving" means that your cars handle like boats - and you will still get killed once those 1940's-Detroit death-traps hit a wall or a tree. Realistic? Sure. But fun? Veramente not! All the mini-games and the money-worries are simply too trivial and half-baked to save the day. Fight-by-numbers made it to the big leagues...
NICE SHADES MAN, BUT CAN YOU SEE THROUGH THEM?
As if all of the above were not enough, the camera placement was so bad it reminded me of the notorious NEVERWINTER NIGHTS days. And sometimes, this turns more into a spectacle than a game.
VITO! CLOSE THOSE SHUTTERS NOW!
I always had a problem with censorship boards (from totalitarian censorship bureaus to Nielsen ratings) but, at the same time, I do respect the rights of parents to raise their children as they see fit. Well, MAFIA II will manage to enrage both sides of the generation gap. If the slow-news days keep up, expect some "outraged" news-reports on the content of this game before school begins. True, there are numerous instances in which this game justifies its MATURE (17+) rating - but this hardly makes it an adult game. Like a Dutch school painting of children looking like smaller adults, MAFIA II offers the juvenile version of a grownup world. I very much doubt that any teenager (which obviously is the target demographic for this game) will be impressed.
And for all this ...fun, we still have to activate the game and tie to permanently to a STEAM account. This is clearly not one of those game you would want to keep, so shouldn't you be able to resell it? Well, 2K GAMES thinks not. You can now make your decision accordingly.
My advice: pass on this infamita and, instead, get your Mafia fix from a good old Godfather Trilogy weekend.
This game is so bad it almost enters cult territory.
But it is also boring so it fails to even do that.

Dungeon Siege 3 Review

Dungeon Siege 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The original DUNGEON SIEGE was an unforgettable game that one can still greatly enjoy today. Its first sequel, DS2, was not as fun to play as it suffered from a number of issues yet it managed to retain the character of the series. Sadly this is not true for the third installment.
A VAST SELECTION OF...FOUR PREMADE CHARACTERS
This is the first thing that hits you. Unlike both previous DS games, DS3 offers only four characters: a Swordmaster (Lucas), a Gunslinger (Katarina), an Archon/Fire Elemental (Anjali) and a Mage (Reinhart). Can you change their gender? No. Can you alter their appearance? No. Can you personalize their stats? Since there are no stats, again: No.
Choose the Swordmaster and after a while realize that he is exactly that: a Sword-only warrior. No bows, no crossbows, no slings, no range weapons whatsoever! Not only are the classes limited, the abilities available to each one of them are severely restricted as well!
Now, when in a cRPG, I cannot identify with female heroes so the fact that in DS3 I cannot play a male gunslinger was major drawback. Such character restrictions are not only a major divergence from the DS tradition but also a serious flaw for any cRPG.
KNOW BLIND TYPE, WILL PLAY. OTHERS MAY ONLY TRY
Reeking of a hasty console port, the controls are a nightmare for the PC. You move with the W and S whereas you turn the camera with the A & D keys. You change your fighting stance with the Q button, you select your abilities with the number keys above whereas you block with the space-bar; you open your inventory with the F(?!) and your character page with the C key; and you need to keep hitting the E key every time you want to pick up or interact with something (more on this later). Did I mention the mouse so far? No. Since consoles cannot use a mouse, when it is eventually used (to attack) it feels like an...afterthought.
Now, since I always play using the arrow keys and rebind keys around them to every other function, were these settings modifiable there were be no problem - but for some unfathomable reason they are not! Hence, more often than not, two-fingers-typist me kept opening the inventory instead of rotating the camera right or opening doors...
Dungeon Siege series fans will remember that these are PC games - playable mostly with the mouse. Click on the character icon to open his inventory, click on the ground to move; click on a chest to open it. Since when did DS games require either a full keyboard or a ...gamepad!
PIXEL HUNTING? IN 2011? HONESTLY?
Approaching a container will pop an icon (an open hand or, quite redundantly in treasure chests, another...treasure chest). However, you cannot click on said icon to open the container. You have to hit E - and in order to do so your hero has to approach and step on the right spot. Now, you did all that, the container opens and the contained item(s) and gold drop on the floor. Can you click on them to pick it up? Strangely no.
The gold is automatically picked up by walking over it (but not walking by it or even standing on it!). More often than not your companion will even oblige you and pick up (most of) the dropped gold. However, that does not happen for items.
That makes sense, to avoid stuffing your inventory with items you would not want - until you realize that in order for the pickup-icon to appear over an item you have to, again, reposition your hero juuust right - and THEN you have to hit E once more. So, a game with awkward controls requires you to pixel-hunt to open chests and pick up loot from the floor. Come on, who thought of that one guys?
And, to add insult to injury, items already explored (say, a note on the floor) do not hide once viewed but remain there to further confuse you.
IMAGINE NO COMPANIONS...AND NO MULE TOO
Playing a DS game always meant you would be managing up to 6 companions, at least one of them being a pack animal with a much larger inventory. Selecting and balancing your companions and then equipping them and setting their default spells or attacks was a great part of the fun. In this third installment there is no pack animal and you only get one companion at a time - and not all the time.
The inventory is much larger now so I can understand why the pack animal could be omitted. And your hero (no matter his class) can transmute loot into gold so that covers a handy ability your party mage would have. However, such transmutation, for some reason, is only offered for some but not all of your unequipped items and can only be accessed by opening the Character(?) page and selecting the Items tab - but not the Inventory. Please read on.
CAN THE VICTOR HANDLE THE SPOILS?
DS3 has no unique items; it has no equipment sets either; and it has no locked levels that become available one by one - luring you to replay the game with higher level items.
Here is another annoyance: items you cannot equip due to your class are automatically stored in your Items storage to either sell them later or transmute them into gold. So you can transmute items you cannot or do not want to use - strangely though, not all of them.
Open a merchant's window (you talk to his...table, not the merchant) and the same thing happens there: you can sell items you cannot or do not want to use - but not all of them! As to the items available to buy, they are all there, regardless of class - and you have to be very careful to notice the class-compatibility! Otherwise you may end up spending all your gold on an item you cannot use.
THE KINGDOM OF EHB NEVER LOOKED NICER.
Because of the pre-release screenshots I had high expectations for this game - and to an extent they were justified. The environments, especially the exterior ones during daylight, are absolutely beautiful. I liked the dynamic shadows, the swinging lanterns and the swirling leaves; I enjoyed the zigzagging butterflies, the birds shying away and the dust stirred up by the hero's footsteps; and I stopped to take in the way flames dance and embers ride the thermals.
Move indoors though and the level of graphical details seems to drop a couple of notches. Moreover, dungeons are also darker than necessary. Even after increasing the gamma, the indoor environments look less impressive than the exterior ones. Come to think of it, even the original DS had more atmospheric dungeons.
So, the graphics overall are nice, not phenomenal but nice. Now, turn your hero around or (even worse) talk to a Non-Playing Character (NPC) and be further disappointed with how they look. Not even Barbara Walters uses so much soft-focus!
WHERE EXACTLY SHOULD I BE LOOKING AT?
The camera is just short of frustrating. Zoom all the way in and you are still looking at your hero from above, greatly reducing the drawing distance (for a game with such beautiful exterior environments, a major flaw). You cannot view from behind the hero, at shoulder height, like in Dragon Age: Origins. Zoom all the way out and you are still looking from an awkward angle, not exactly top-down and, although that was the zooming level I mostly used in the end, not exactly helpful either.
In all fairness, the entire DS series more or less has the same issue - but since so much was taken out of the game was it not possible to improve on just this one?
AND THE MUSIC PLAYED ON
You know how Hemsey's Mind Heist (of Inception trailer fame) makes everything epic? Well, so did the main theme of the original DS (I still use it as a ringtone for a group in my phone). DS3 ...well, not so much. The music stays in the background and it subtly complements the action on screen. It does have its moments - but it does not give your sword swings that extra umph or make you brave it out and risk staying in the battle just a little longer.
In fact, I loaded the game with the Main Theme of the original DS playing in the background and it was a big improvement!
REMEMBER REMEMBER THE SAVES OF NOVEMBER
DS3 has a save system that gave me some trouble at first - but that was my fault. The game will autosave at preset points which are usually spaced too far apart. Relay on them and, whenever your hero dies, you will find replaying from some point that seems ...months ago.
However, in order to make a save, you need to step into the yellow smoke and press E to bring up the save page (the game pops up balloon icons everywhere yet nobody thought to give a hint of this?!). Do this often, especially in the beginning when your hero is still of low level and (if, like me, you just do not do defense), expect to die every couple of hours or so.
You get 40 saves but you can overwrite older ones so there are plenty.
OMINOUS STEAM OVER THE SWAMP
You guessed it, DS3 comes with mandatory STEAM tie-in. With only rare notable exceptions I deduct a full star from my rating for such restrictive DRM schemes. This was not one of those exceptions. If STEAM is not important to you, feel free to adjust for this deduction. Otherwise, you have been warned.
I cannot know whether OBSIDIAN aimed primarily to the console market to avoid competing with DIABLO III (rumored to be released in June but probably still months away) or it simply rushed its PC port for the same reason. In any case, this is a mediocre action cRPG at best in need of numerous patches.
Replay the original DS, it is a much better game.
Alternatively, wait for the price to match the product.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Review

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was a big fan of the AC series since AC1. Before I bought this game, I checked out the videos on Youtube and looked through the whole walkthrough (because I play on my computer, and the PC version is released around half a year after the console versions are released). It looked great. The graphics is shocking, and the fighting system seems to have improved tremendously. I also like the crossbow, which allows a much stealthier gameplay. This game seems like the new star in the AC series. Unfortunate, I can't say when I play the game, because:
1. A CASUAL-GAME LENGTHED STORY
the main story is pitifully short. Apart from all of the "freeing Rome from Borgia Towers" minigames, I spent no more than 20 hours finishing the game. Before anyone tells me this is not AC3 (as someone pointed out on Youtube), let me make my point clear: This is a CORE Game, NOT a CASUAL Game. As such, I expect it to be properly-lengthed (the main story alone, without the side ones, should be worth at least 1.5 days of gameplay).
2. MEMORY REPLAY: 10 MINUTES EACH
AC:B, unlike AC2, offers memory replay, where you get a chance to select and play through previous chapters again. And this is an excellent design! except that each chapter is chipped into small sections.
For example, if I wanted to play through chapter 4, I would select chapter 4.1 and finish it in 10 minutes. Then, I would be sent back to the chapter-select scene (this is not optional) to select chapter 4.2. When I do this, I am thrown into a new game independent of my chapter 4.1 gameplay. There seldom exists a section worth more than 10 minutes of gameplay.
3. FREE ROAM IN AN ENEMY-FREE WORLD!
Upon finishing the game, your assassin literally frees the whole Rome from Templar control. You walk in a world deprived of all the fun guards and fights; I have never faced more than 5 guards at once after I finished the game. And, because of AC:B's fighting system, each guard fight ends in 1 minute. The only alternatives to wasting time in this boring world are to
(1) replay the 10-minute sections, which is very boring, too, and
(2) to start a new game (meaning you need to walk through all the boring introductions, trainings, and other missions you don't want to play through again; along with re-earning your hard-won money, weapons, armors, available areas, and trained assassin followers).
Overall, without any replay value, this game is worth no more than the 20-hour first-time walkthrough and the multiplayer component, which I did not use. (This does not include the minigames such as guild missions and objectives, which are all very repetitive)
***Note: I am not saying the graphics doesn't look very good, the fighting system is horrible, nor that the crossbow is useless. All I am saying is that you are left with little interesting things to do once you are finished with the main story, and it doesn't take long to reach that stage.

My daughter bought me this game after I tried the trial version of Slingo that came with my computer. Needless to say, I became totally addicted! This game has many different levels and different games to play. The goal is to get 5 stars in each (some not that easy). Anyone who has ever tried Slingo should try this one too - great for the brain!

We recently had to upgrade the main computer used by our family, and I was dreading it. We have several user accounts, with hundreds of gigs of data and more applications installed than I can count (many of which were installed so long ago that I'm not even sure that we still have the media.)
Besides that, the new computer came with Vista, so we we were doing an upgrade from XP at the same time (note: if you're using Vista make sure to get the newly-released version of PCmover so that it supports it.)
I was completely impressed by the way that this utility handled the transfer. It was simple to use, and went without a hitch. There were only handful of programs that needed minor tweaking afterwards because either their licensing or their configurations depended on the specific system - all of these were ironed out quickly and everything is running beautifully.
A recommendation... I would recommend "grooming" the old computer a bit before the move: 1) uninstall any applications and remove any data that you don't want moved, since you can't pick and chose during the move. 2) If you're moving to a new OS, upgrade your applications on the old computer to the latest version beforehand. It's easier to handle this separately from any cleanup you may need after the move.
