ABBYY FineReader Express Mac has an great OCR engine, better than anything else I've used. It is especially good at extracting text from non-standard document formats (e.g., posters) while keeping the output in the correct order.
However, the Mac version is poorly executed. First, it has zero batch functionality -- and for some reason the developers made sure that you cannot use AppleScript to automate OCR tasks. I asked a customer service rep about that and he told me I would need to buy the $600 corporate version for PC to have any kind of batch processing functionality.
Second, the program often crashes on documents longer than 50 pages. When working with longer documents, the underlying C++ code which is used to program the Mac version fails, for reasons that appear to be due to poor memory management. For example:
Conversion of the image /var/folders/4v/4vMOSpHMEmG34ea8kIGm9++++TI/-Tmp-/1F01480B6EA341B8B410/Imgtslxdf.tif failed: Internal Program Error:
../Src/posix/VirtualImpl.cpp, 145.
It's a shame that the software implementation is so bad because the underlying OCR engine is so good. If you just want to OCR a short document, this software should work great, but for anything else, seek other options.
