Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade - Old Version Review

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade - Old Version

I installed Windows XP Upgrade on my home computer to replace my current ME operating system, but have now uninstalled it. My advice is, if your current operating system is basically satisfactory, don't make the move to Windows XP unless you've made sure your older programs and hardware are compatible with XP and there is some feature you feel you really, really must have.
In the words of the XP instruction manual, "The Windows XP Setup program will automatically check the hardware and software already installed on your computer for potential conflicts." "Potential conflicts" is a nice way of saying that certain programs and hardware items may not work well or at all with XP, because it wants digital signatures, updated drivers or more.
In my case, during the installation process, XP informed me that "Setup has detected that some hardware or programs on your computer might not function correctly after the upgrade is completed. This lack of functionality can have an effect on things you might want to do, such as connecting to the Internet, accessing e-mail, printing, scanning, and playing sounds or music." (Wow, aren't those the things that most people use their computers for?)
After I completed the XP installation (which proved to be a very simple process), I did in fact encounter considerable difficulty with a number of software and hardware items. As examples, XP was extremely cranky about accepting my cable modem and I could not get my printer to work at all, even after I downloaded a new driver from the manufacturer's website. (Solution - buy a new printer?) The XP installation also rendered my Norton Antivirus 2004 software inoperable, a problem which the Norton website recognized but had no solution for. I also faced problems with my CD creation and digital camera software as well the Outlook Express email software.
I want to stress that all of these problems have solutions, but I eventually hit the wall "installation fatigue." It just seemed that, every time I got a problem solved, two more would pop up - so I just gave up and uninstalled XP. I concluded that what I had seen on my computer screen so far in terms of new features simply did not outweigh the problems I was experiencing and the potential cost of new programs and hardware that would be compatible with XP.
My main point here is that there is a lot of hype about the advantages of XP but no one tells buyers that it may cost you 4 or 5 times as much to replace hardware and software that is not compatible with XP, and that you may have to spend hours at problem-solving in order to get your computer functioning. Microsoft has a web link at www.microsoft.com/windows/catalog/ that is supposed to provide information on whether your applications and hardware are "XP-ready." This should be put in at least ½ inch bright orange letters on the box so that purchasers will notice it and check BEFORE they tear open that shrink-wrap and lose the right to return the product for a refund.

War Leaders: Clash of Nations Review

War Leaders: Clash of Nations

Ok let me start out by saying that I am a veteran with these exact type of games. I have been playing these things for over 30 years now. I have every one of the Hearts of Iron games, I have Making History, Gary Grigsby's World at War, Axis & Allies (all versions that were made on the comp), just to name a few. Now I have this War Leaders and I tell you after watching all the gameplay videos on youtube, I had to get it! How is it? Well, it has bits of every one of those games I listed above all in one. A huge thing to say since those are all great games. Not to mention the graphics and effects, one word... WOW. This is one little jewel and the only thing I wonder is how in the heck it was only $[...] is beyond me. Especially considering all the actual WW2 units in the game that look like their real historic copies. Check out their webside and see what I mean. Oh one thing I absolutely NEED to mention is the map is totally original, a globe! One huge globe of the world. Ever played Super Power 2? That was the only game I ever remember doing that. If you are a fan of these games as I am, then put this game in your collection if its the last thing you do, it is off the charts! Search warspite2 on youtube and see all the footage I posted on some battles.

Silver Efex Pro - Academic Review

This is some of the best software I've installed and used in years. It goes in very easy to Adobe Photoshop and then is readily accessible in the application. Nik can take old washed out photos and bring them forth into new life. I highly recommend. I ordered the Academic version by mistake and had to have that order cancelled and request the proper version. The Amazon listing didn't show the requirements for 'academic' qualifications.

The actual physical device included is fantastic. It's small, easy to use, and does it's job without any hassle. The software included is a little clumsy at first, but once you get the hang of it it's not a problem.
I've spent about 20 hours so far recording from all of my family's old home movies and ran into very few problems throughout the whole process. Just make sure to do a few short test recordings to find the best format before you commit hours and hours of time. For me the WMV 4GB setting gave the best quality/file size ratio. But anyway once you figure out which format to record in everything's pretty easy.
The only thing that was a bit frustrating was the editing component of the software. It's just sorta clunky overall, but it gets the job done. If it bothers you there are plenty of free programs out there that you can substitute in. The recording aspect produces normal video files which you can easily move to other programs.
Where this product really shines is the ease of capturing video with minimal mess. I'd rate it a 4.5/5 if I could, but I'm pleased enough that I'll bump it up to a 5 rather than drop it to a 4 on Amazon's rating system. I did a lot of research before buying and I'm fairly positive this is the best video capture system available right now.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Upgrade Review

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Upgrade
Average Reviews:

I have been using LR since v1. The last 2 revisions have brought significant improvements.
With v2 the standout benefit for me was the local adjustments brush (that alone made the upgrade a no-brainer.
With v3 I wasn't as eager to buy another upgrade - UNTIL I tried it out and noticed that after "updating" views of my images to use the "2010 process" the difference jumped out at me (particularly those at ISO 800+).
The higher ISO RAW files from an Olympus E-1 and E-300 suddenly looked demonstrably better (same with files from my E-3).
Noise reduction in Lightroom has always been less-than-stellar and I've been saving my pennies to buy a "real" noise reduction program for ~$100.
I am SO glad that I held off buying a separate noise reduction program until after I tested LR3 - I was about to pay just about the same price as the LR3 upgrade just for a noise reduction program!
IMO, the noise reduction now integrated into LR3 is the BEST that I have yet seen.
Another tool which I've pined for was a USABLE watermarking tool. FINALLY it is here!
Thanks Adobe (even though you really should've had this in there from the get-go.
There are a number of other tweaks that I've noticed (with a smile) - a bit of a speed increase (thanks to true 64bit support), a little more power in working with Black & White renderings and the lens profiles are fantastically useful (for me).
If you are on the fence as to whether you really want to buy this upgrade or wait for the next version just answer the following questions:
1 - Do you shoot primarily in JPG? The image processing engine won't mean as much to you.
2 - Does your camera already have excellent high-iso noise characteristics? This upgrade won't be the revelation it was to me.
3 - Do you not really care about watermarking? One less reason to upgrade.
4 - Are you running on a 32bit system or with

Nancy Drew: Ransom Of The Seven Ships Review

Nancy Drew: Ransom Of The Seven Ships
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The ND games are always at least moderately fun, but this one offers something of a departure from the feel of previous efforts. Largely, I found it fell short.
From almost the first moment of the game, you're presented with a lengthy and ever-increasing list of tasks to accomplish. Thankfully, these can be completed in pretty much whatever order you like; however, the motivation behind them is rarely more than "because El Toro/Johnny/that squawking bird said so." Even at the end, there's no real sense of urgency - perhaps because there's practically no one to talk to. No phone, no funny e-mails, no Prudence Rutherford. Just a stressed out George and a none-too-talkative beach bum. There are barely any suspects, and while the big villain reveal at the end is clever, for me it took away from the story not to try to figure out whodunit on my own. Also, the island, while beautifully depicted, is limited. Driving and sailing have always felt like time wasters to me - I much prefer the near-instant mass transit systems of some previous games - and the locations offer little to explore beyond the bare essentials.
As I mentioned, the game is highly task- and puzzle-driven. I found some of these puzzles to be obtuse or simply way too hard; at times I knew what I had to do, but I just couldn't do it in the limited time available or without what seemed like a lucky stroke. One of the mini-games is a (long) game of complete chance, which I don't remember ever happening in an ND game before and is really pretty boring. The puzzles might have been more of a pleasant mental exercise and less of an irritation if not that so many of them were timed. I've never needed so many second chances before, and found myself resorting to the Internet to get the solution because I got sick of either dying and restarting or leaving the puzzle to refill my air tank and return.
Unlike many of the previous ND games, I had little sense of discovery or excitement with this one. There's no deep storyline to unfold or layers of secrets to discover. There's just a lot of traipsing around the island collecting stuff that seems completely pointless until it's required by a later puzzle. If you like the ND games for the mental workout of the puzzles, you'll love this one; if you prefer the character interaction, the snooping, the suspense, and the wit of many of the previous games, this one won't be your favorite. It's not mine.

Corel PaintShop Photo Express 2010 Review

Corel PaintShop Photo Express 2010
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Corel PaintShop Photo 2010 has one absolutely unforgivable, fatal flaw: IT OVERWRITES YOUR ORIGINAL PICTURE FILES WITHOUT WARNING. This is ridiculous. You can't experiment, or try out features to learn the program without running the danger of ruining your pictures. As soon as you switch from one picture to another, the first picture is saved with all the modifications you made to it. No warning, no chance to change your mind. Corel knows best.
The solution, of course, is to hit the "revert to original" button before you change to another picture. But how often are you going to remember to do that? ANY DECENT PROGRAM will ask you for confirmation before destroying your original file.
The installation process is similarly constructed, making multiple changes to your OS without once asking permission.
So never mind the SLOWNESS of this thing (pack a lunch to get you through the installation process). Never mind the extreme (or so it seems to me) hardware requirements. Never mind the cutesy-poo non-standard user interface. Never mind that you really don't get very many tools to work on your photos with--if Auto-Fix doesn't do what you want, you don't have much else you can do. (And some of the tools are ridiculously worthless; for example, under Effects you get change to black and white, change to sepia, "antique", and soft focus. Wow. Frames and Edges are cute for about 5 minutes. And the Picture Tube function [more accurately called 'rubber stamp'] has no reason for existing that I can think of.) The fact that this thing overwrites your photos without permission completely takes it out of the running.
Luckily, I destroyed "only" 2 pictures before I realized what was going on. A simple confirmation dialog box would be all it took to fix this fatal flaw. It's insane that it doesn't have one.

McAfee Total Protection 2011 Review

McAfee Total Protection 2011
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sure it works, but McAfee doesn't understand that McAfee is not exempt from the rules that its software enforces. They say they block pop-ups and adware. What they don't say is that they block all pop-ups EXCEPT POP-UPS THAT THIS PROGRAM GIVES YOU, ADVERTISING McAFEE PRODUCTS AND SERVICES!
If you install this, you will get:
1) Incessant pop-ups on your computer desktop asking you if you want to buy additional products or subscriptions from McAfee. Conveniently, McAfee Total Protection can't stop these pop-ups -- and McAfee support staff don't seem to understand why this is a problem. These McAfee pop-ups appear on your desktop and not in your browser, so any browser settings do not prevent them appearing. (The current round of ads is urging me to renew my anti-virus subscription, even though my current subscription doesn't expire for another 8 months.)
2) An entry called "McAfee" in the top-most level of your Start menu that you cannot move or remove. If you try, it will reappear within hours. Nice bit of advertising real estate, that, for it to say "McAfee" in the top level of your Start menu.
3) A desktop "McAfee" icon that reappears if you remove it. (There is a way to stop this particular annoyance, but you have to dig through the McAfee website for instructions, and following them requires you to tinker with your registry.)If you write to McAfee and tell them that their ads are not welcome on your computer, you may eventually get the following response as I did from one of their brilliant tech support people:
"It is really unfortunate that your computer got infected by virus when McAfee was installed. I suggest you to try some of the ?Free Virus Removal Solutions? before contacting our technician through paid service. Please visit the below link which will provide detailed information about our Virus Removal Services." In other words, install McAfee, get McAfee ads, complain to McAfee, get an offer from McAfee to sell you a service to remove the "virus" that "your computer got ... when McAfee was installed."So good software, EVIL COMPANY. Buy something else, as I will certainly be doing. Even if this one's free after rebate, it's still coming to you at a price.ADDENDUM: After suffering through McAfee's advertisements for so long, I finally gave up on them fixing the problem and uninstalled McAfee in favor of NORTON INTERNET SECURITY 2011 (Amazon link: Norton Internet Security 2011 - 1 User/3 Pc). This was an excellent move. Not only does Norton not misbehave with its own advertisements (it even has an explicit setting to turn off "Special Offer Notification") and icon litter, but it has a much more-intuitive interface, it seems smarter in figuring out what the user needs without having to ask, and it even caught a trojan-infected file on its first scan that had been on my hard drive through 4 years of supposed McAfee protection. See my review for Norton Internet Security 2011 - 1 User/3 Pc, and please consider your purchase carefully.

Age of Empires III: Complete Collection Review

Age of Empires III: Complete Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This collection of the basic game and expansions is a good value for Real Time Strategy (RTS) game players. The War Chiefs expansion is ok, campaign short, and not a lot of depth. The Asian Dynasties Expansion is a lot of fun, three campaigns (Japan, India, China), with each nation having their own wonders giving them unique special abilities. The different nations are neat, but not having a United States colonial civilization to choose from in skirmish mode is disappointing, especially after playing the campaign game in War Chiefs. The campaigns are easier to complete and have less depth than Age of Empires II (AoE2). AoE3 campaigns were overall fun, but require much less strategy to win; build one small army to defend your base and when the large army is ready to go, overwhelm the computer.
The graphics have improved, but did experienced significant lag and even game freezing at times due to ship combat on the duo-core Thinkpad, even with all graphic options reduced to minimal levels. Other than naval combat, the game played well. Not sure why the lag occurred.
There are some improvements to the game play where a single large farm can be built and no need to worry about cueing or constantly checking if there is enough wood to re-task the workers to harvest food. The use of a home city for the campaign game is really neat with special cards to provide resources, upgrades, or units. Each nation has unique units and cards. The strategy of the cards is very important, does the player want to have early age villagers to gather resources faster or hold on for the late age military units for the end game battles? This adds depth to the game.
The basic resources are still wood, gold, food, with experience for home city improvement (cards). Experience is gained from killing enemy units, destroying structures, building units, and having a trading post.
The negative about the game is the combat options. The player no longer has the option for unit formations or commands such as defend ground or hold ground. Units will rush off when attacked and baited by the enemy. Worse yet, units will stay in large massed formations when attacking artillery units, to be blown apart. The player can not select skirmish mode or defend unit mode. Your healer will rush off and attack an enemy building or unit.
Another negative is artillery units being too strong to destroy and the targeting of units. Example would be attacking a group of enemy artillery units that are in marching order. Your cavalry can attack the artillery, but somehow, even the big siege gun, will be able to unlimber and fire, killing multiple units even though they are engaged in hand to hand combat against swordsmen and cavalry. Artillery does not cause splash or collateral damage to friendly units too. So if the enemy has their infantry attacking yours in hand to hand combat, their artillery will be able to fire through them and only kill your units, not theirs. This is a frustrating factor.
As we know in history, artillery units, when attacked in hand to hand combat, can not fire, also siege cannons, take a long time to reload and can not if the crews are attacked in hand to hand combat. But in AoE3, the game has super artillery being able to unlimber and fire multiple times, killing your units before being finally subdued while under attack the entire time. The siege cannons take a lot of damage to destroy too. This is a very frustrating experience that detracts from the game.
Given lack of combat formation / options and the lag time experienced in naval combat, AoE2 and Age of Mythology are still the preferred games. The massive battles with large armies between multiple players were a lot fun in AoE2 as each side slugged it out, but for some reason, lacking the same level of intensity and excitement in AoE3.
Unfortunately, Ensemble Studios was closed by Microsoft, which is not a good sign for us computer gamers. If Microsoft closes their only computer game developer, it becomes very clear that their focus is to make money from console games. The loss of Ensemble Studios means that we computer strategy game players will have fewer quality games to purchase and play in the future.
Thank you Ensemble Studios, your games have been fun to play and AoE3 was another enjoyable experience.

Anime Studio Debut 5 Review

Anime Studio Debut 5

Well depending on what you are looking to do with it, it's an okay piece of animation software. However there are a few key things to be aware of. First off there is quite a learning curve to this software, and no printed manual comes with it, so I found it to be difficult to learn-relying on tutorial and web manuals isn't my thing). The provided content is very limited despite how the description above sounds. Most of the characters aren't even anime style but more like real primitive toons. The anime figures that do come with the software aren't even produced inside anime studio but are rather Photoshop type objects that are very limited as to what they can and will do for you. Also these don't serve as good examples as to how to even make your own characters. I found the interface confusing and the vector drawing tools to be very limited and of poor quality. It's fun to play with and to learn about animation but producing anything of quality might be more difficult than with other software, even freeware that's out there and available. In my limited opinion it's just written up better than it delivers.

F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate Review

F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Lately, the are a number of novels sporting ROBERT LUDLUM's name up front - yet they are ghostwritten by in-stable-writers of his publisher. A good effort in their part, yet, of course, they feel nothing like a LUDLUM's novel.
SIERRA, the legal owner of the FEAR franchise, is putting out this official (stand alone) expansion - whilst, MONOLITH, the original team that actually created FEAR, has announced its own upcoming expansion named PROJECT ORIGIN.
As with ghostwritten books, the in-house elves do not feel confident to create anything new and instead take baby-steps around the original story. Thus, the PERSEUS MANDATE is actually the same story as the original FEAR - seen from the perspective of a different F.E.A.R. agent on a timeline that runs parallel to the original.
To make this idea more palatable, a new set of weapons and gadgets are available (you will love the UV scope that helps targeting in foggy rooms) and the set of enemies is refreshed with some new additions. Paxton Fettel, the original villain gets replaced by, well, Perseus (whose Mandate we are concerned with), Alma (the scary little grungy girl) only makes fleeing appearances - and Shade fits the shoes of the scariest spectral beast around.
The graphics, although somewhat improved, do not veer far from the original - which may not be a bad thing, since they were quite good, yet somewhat dated today. What has clearly improved is the sound: PERSEUS MANDATE may not be as visually scary as the original but it sure is aurally scary!
All in all, a slightly improved game with a clearly weaker story.
The cookie-cutter at work...

Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.0 - Old Version Review

Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.0 - Old Version

Please see reviews of the previous version 7.0. The Adobe activation process can cause a lot of continuing problems for legitimate users of this software. Too bad such good software is hampered by such a process. Being in the software business, I don't mind companies worrying about piracy and taking some measures but this is a bit too much. You might need to allow the software to access the internet regularly to keep your activation (and not bother you with notices of reactivation) but that also means you open it for Adobe to do their push marketing into their software. I have used Adobe products for over 15 years and have always liked them. Too bad, they have lost the customer focus in their rage for software piracy and greed for intrusive marketing.

Microsoft MapPoint 2010 Review

Microsoft MapPoint 2010
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, I recommend that you download the free full-featured 60-day trial and experiment before deciding whether to purchase. Except for the download time, installation is easy (trivial). The trial's reminders occur only when you start the app. If you decide to buy, activation is trivial--simply enter the key.
I got this package (for review) primarily for the "visualize business data" aspect advertised. What it turned out to be was an inconsequential update of what I remember of Microsoft Streets & Trips circa 2004. Then, the only reason I ever used S&T over online maps was to display address info from a simple spreadsheet. Recently, some of my colleagues would have benefited from importing spreadsheets with address info into a map application. When they tried to do this in Google Maps, their (understandable) reaction was best summed up by "Google doesn't want people like us to use this" and "Life is too short". Although MapPoint 2010 is "integrated" with MS Office, that integration fails far short of their needs: The data you can import into a map, and what you can do with it inside this app, is so severely constrained that I don't see any benefit to their types of tasks.
The maps themselves are of poor visual quality, especially the poor contrast. Some labels are medium gray against a light olive background. I routinely missed items I was looking for, not just labels, but push-pins and even bar charts. The characters in the labels are akin to what you got from a very low-resolution printer, one where the jagged edges from the pixels are readily apparent. Because of this, my sense is that as you scan the map the street labels--being at various angles--can slide from being perceived as text to being simply noise in the background.
I don't see myself using MapPoint 2010--for the things I do, it is no better, and often worse, than free Web-based resources. My key requirement was to be able to augment the places in the database, both annotating the ones they provide and adding places of my own, and then be able to execute searches against this augmented database. MapPoint supports none of the former and its searches ignore any tags, keywords and other annotations you might attach to an entry via the free-format field (searches are limited to name and city).
Note that Windows 7 is not on the list of supported operating systems. This could be an inadvertent omission in keeping with the lack of attention to detail in this product.
The remainder of this review gives details of the problems I found. Note: When I say that MapPoint cannot do something, it should be taken to include that I couldn't find how to do it. The "documentation" is limited to the usual Microsoft Help topics - snippets that help with potential terminological confusions and with finding items that are deeply buried in the menus, but mostly tell you what is blindingly obvious.
======================================
The user interface is badly inconsistent and is clearly a mash-up. For example, in Find Nearby Places, a single-click on the name of a restaurant in the LHS pane produces a small semi-transparent box on the map showing its location, and a double-click produces the display of the information in an opaque box, but for other categories, such as Pharmacies and Schools, a single-click produces nothing. Another example: Some of the sub-panes in the LHS navigation pane are dismissed by clicking the "x" in an upper corner, others on the side (different icon), while yet others use a pop-up menu. Another example: The Undo capability applies to some categories and not others, without any discernible logic.
There are lots of little UI annoyances. For example, when the cursor gets within 16 pixels of an edge of the map, it turns into a large arrow, signaling that clicking the mouse will scroll the map. However, MapPoint doesn't seem to take that margin into account when calculating where to position clickable content, and I found myself too often having to scroll the map to be able to click on such items and then scrolling the map back to the original position.
The maps themselves were troublesome. I could not find how to display municipal boundaries. Names of cities were hard to find among all the other labels. Minor adjustments to the map would cause "strobing", for example, clicking on a balloon could radically alter which street labels were displayed. This was disconcerting when working on a map of a city I was familiar with, but for a city I was unfamiliar with, this was frustrating ("Where is Center Street? I thought it was on this map just a second ago."). Aside: You see bad choices of what to label on the world map as well, for example in looking at the Pacific, you find that the "Palau" label (tiny island nation) extends over the (unlabeled) Philippines.
--------
Map items--balloons/push-pins--that you import from a spreadsheet onto the map are limited to 8 fields: 2 are for names, 5 are address components and 1 is for your use (free-form data). The caption displayed when you selected a balloon is a small fixed size, so there is truncation of the info that you enter in these fields. Although there is plenty of room in the LHS navigation pane, only the first 8 entries are listed, rather than having a scroll-able list. Names have no structure, for example, if your database/spreadsheet has separate fields for first and last names, you need to merge those fields before importing (there is a second Name field, but it is not included in what is displayed in the navigation pane). Similarly, if you have a contact person in a department in a company, you need to combine them into a single name field. Similarly if your database uses multiple fields for street addresses (common because it simplifies validating data entry and selecting sections of a street). MapPoint does NOT support importing email addresses (other than as plain text in the free-format field), but it does allow you to enter Web addresses into the free-form field and it does recognize those and make them click-able, but it is so kludgy that it comes across as a quick patch (in a location's Properties window there is a non-functional text-entry field for the URL). The balloons/push-pins are in such muted colors that it was easy to overlook some of them.
Note: If you want to import a subset of data from your address book/contact manager application, the XLS or CSV file that it creates is likely to have similar problems. Since Outlook is/was part of the MS Office suite, I had expected at least that its export format would be directly import-able into MapPoint.
When importing data from a spreadsheet, MapPoint does some corrections. For street suffixes--St, Ave, Rd, Lane, Way, Circle,...-it did a good job on the spreadsheets I used as tests (from real-world applications). However, my city is not a difficult case: Except for cul-de-sacs, there are no name conflicts between categories--for example, there isn't a First St and a (perpendicular) First Ave--and circumstances mean that the street numbers in those cul-de-sacs are rarely (never?) possible ones on the corresponding main street. However, the correction algorithm is very simplistic and makes lots of mistakes. For example, in importing 250 addresses within my city, two entries were missing the city field. One street name was very unusual and the city was guessed correctly, but the other had a street name of "Lincoln" and the guesses were all from the other side of the country--MapPoint did not use either the addresses already imported or the locale being displayed on the map to bias its guesses. Similarly on the misspelled street name "Bryon": MapPoint guessed "Bryson" from a nearby ZIP Code rather than "Byron" from the Zip Code given in the entry. Corrections are limited to selecting one of its guesses: If it guesses badly, you have to tell it to skip the whole entry rather than providing guidance or a manual correction. For a product that prominently advertises its integration with MS Office, I expected it to offer the option to have corrections also be made to the spreadsheet being imported. But MapPoint does not even log the corrections being made so that you can later update the spreadsheet yourself--you need to manually create that list as the error messages are displayed.
Because of the constraints on the data you can import into a map, I would likely do my filtering of my dataset within the spreadsheet, using MapPoint only to create the map to be printed or exported into an MS Office document. Because I can't import data directly from my spreadsheet and database formats (names and addresses need to be collapsed), it is pointless to do any updates to the data within MapPoint because the exported format would require difficult processing to get back to the underlying format.
--------
FIND: The Help topics state that the Find operation connects to the Internet. For me, it only searched the program's database. For added items, it searched the name field, but not the free-form text field.
The Find operation cannot be geographically limited, for example, to the area of the map currently being displayed or a ZIP Code. You _can_ include the city name as a search term, but it is subjected to the same fuzzy matching as other search terms. Adding a street name or ZIP Code to the search terms produces substantially _worse_ results, indicating that those fields are ignored by search. Example: "peet's coffee, palo alto" produces 6 matches (the 3 sought, 1 understandable, 2 inexplicable). Add the ZIP Code of one of them ("94306") and there are over 130 hits.
Note: The SEARCH icon on the toolbar seems to have no real purpose: It brings up a LHS pane for "Search results", but nothing seems to use it--the...Read more›

WinFax Pro 10.03 Review

WinFax Pro 10.03
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am not new to computers. I am used to fixing many kinds of software problems in Windows. This is not an easy product to install on a Windows XP system, especially after it has been upgraded to SP2. If you are expecting to simply install this product, reboot your computer, and start faxing, you will be sorely disappointed. Despite warnings in many other reviews, I purchased v10.03 for use on my Windows XP system with SP2. While I was able to eventually get it installed and running, it slowed my computer's reboot time to a crawl and trashed my scanner software. It took several hours to get most things working again.
First off, you should not try to install anything less than version 10.03 on an XP system. Symantec warns you about this on their web site. If you insist on purchasing WinFax Pro - which I do not recommend - make sure you buy version 10.03.
Secondly, WinFax Pro conflicts with the built-in Windows Fax program in Win XP. You will need to uninstall Windows Fax (which can be done through Control Panel's Add/Remove programs, but you need to look for it in the Add/Remove Windows Components section) to get WinFax Pro to function properly.
Third, after you install WinFax Pro your computer may take forever to reboot. It looks like it is hung up in this process, but if you go do something else for a while it will eventually reboot. I have not figured out why it does this, but it has definitely slowed my computer reboot time to a crawl.
Fourth, if you have a scanner, it may trash your scanner software (it certainly did mine - HP Scanjet 6300C). Symantec's web site has information about this in their knowledge base for WinFax Pro, so it must happen to many others, too. I did not use their fix, though, as I could not find updated twain.dll and twain_32.dll files that they recommend using to replace the ones they screwed up. Instead, I uninstalled and then reinstalled my scanner's installation software. I had to run Symantec's SystemWorks software to find/fix Windows problems and reinstall the scanner drivers a few times before it worked, but eventually I got the scanner working again. WinFax seems to have permanently disabled my scanner's buttons for doing quick operations, though. I have not found a way to restore button function. But I can scan with the Precision Pro software that is part of HP's available software downloads on their web site.
As far as I can tell, after fixing the above-mentioned problems, WinFax Pro 10.03 does seem to work okay. It does not appear to be any improvement over prior versions of WinFax, so unless you have upgraded to Windows XP you will not likely find it worthwhile to upgrade. As many others have stated before me, this is very buggy software that causes many problems with Windows XP and will be horribly frustrating for anyone trying to install and use this software on an XP system. BUYER BEWARE!
