I was hoping this software would assist me in finding my way around the logging roads of Nova Scotia during my summer months there. MapSend has no detail of back roads and only useful if you travel main highways. One of the few lakes outlined in Nova Scotia is mis-named which caused me a little confusion until I realized the shortcomings of this product.

Magellan USA 3-D Mapsend Topo Software Review

(More customer reviews)I have been using my copy of Topo 3D for 2 weeks now and have been very impressed with the detail of the maps. The street information is based on NavTeq and is much more up-to-date and accurate than previous software versions. The Topographic information is based on a 30 meter grid layout as opposed to the 90 meter grid layout of the previous Mapsend Topo. Needless to say, the topo information is much better.
The biggest Pros for this software:
Better Street Detail, More detailed topography, increased mapsize allows you to download maps up to the size of a 247MB file (with the appropriate SD Memory card) -- previous versions allowed only up to 64MB, 3D view is nice to help visualize an area (you can see it from above, rotate it around to get different angles, and place yourself inside the map to review a given route), lots of Points of Interest (so many that you have to set options on which ones to show so they don't clutter up the map), easy user interface with lots of options for creating routes/waypoints and transferring to your GPS.
Biggest Disappointments:
Trails are not shown on the software. It does give you markers for the trail heads, but it does not show the trails themselves. The software is teamed up with Trails.com as a selling feature which seemed pretty promising. This was HUGELY anti-climactic -- It requires a $30/yr subscription to use the information, and it only provides you access to books/articles/printed maps -- not the ability to download trails to your GPS Receiver. This is the biggest reason for a 4 star rating rather than a 5.
As an aside, the software doesn't sell that it does Autorouting, so I didn't dock it stars for this, but someday Magellan will get the idea that an all inclusive software package will provide the most user satisfaction. Why are Topo maping and Autoroute mapping treated as mutually exclusive products?
All in all, I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it to others. Good job Magellan!

Garmin City Navigator 2009 Mexico Map microSD Card Review

(More customer reviews)I have purchased this and already used it in Mexico. It is helpful to get you to any of the MAJOR cities but even within Guadalajara it was clearly very dated and did not compare favorably with a GPS that my friend was using that he purchased in Mexico.
I bought the Garmin GPS specifically so I could use this map in Mexico. I called Garmin and asked when an update would be available and was told they have no plans to update. When traveling to Ajijic it did not show ANY streets or even a road to get to the city. Ajijic is on the shore of Lake Chipala -- the largest lake in Mexico.
Let us hope with that with more requests Garmin will finally update this map. It is at least five years out of date.

(More customer reviews)The bottom data is not complete for the lake I fish (Kentucky Lake). Some of the major bays are ommitted and mapping is incomplete in some of the best shallow water areas. I wish there was an alternative but Navionics has the market captured. On the bright side, Hot Maps loaded easily the first try and works well in my Hummingbird 597HDDI.

Generally very good directions but sometimes goofed when approaching or driving within a round about, a road feature popular in Scandnavia. My advice is to rely on road signs over the gps when it comes to round abouts, especially within congested areas. Getting the latest update is highly recommended due to continual road construction & improvement.

Garmin TOPO US 24K Northeast Map (DVD) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been using this 24K map to hike in Upstate NY. It does very well in indicating where the trail crosses roads, streams, etc. It's handy and useful. On the other hand, I am accustomed to hiking with those elegant maps produced by the Swiss and Austrians for the European Alps. The Garmin Topo map really doesn't compare to those in beauty and detail. On my alpine maps I can actually locate the big boulders and rock outcroppings that I like to sit on at lunch or when I take my break. I treasure my Ordnance Survey maps of Dartmoor that I use for letter-boxing. The Garmin simply doesn't give that kind of information. It seems sketch-like by comparison. Nevertheless, it is great to have a huge chunk of the northeast stored in my gps. It lives in the side pocket of my backpack, and it's ready to go whenever I have a few hours to spare. I did try using this map to find a geo-cache listed along one of the trails I use. It put me right on top of it. No complaints there.
The instructions for loading the map into my gps unit from my computer were not very clear, so I gave the folks at Garmin a call. They were terrific. They walked me through the process and had me up and running before they left the line. That's a major plus.

City Navigator North America Review

(More customer reviews)The product arrived timely. My intention was to use it with my Garmin Edge 705 for cycling routes. No substantial documentation for product use came with the DVD. And, Garmin has no documentation on their site. You have to string together bits and pieces from help files and maybe try You-Tube for a demo. I called and emailed Garmin support and had to wait forever. The product lets you trace a map route you would like to follow on your bicycle, but there is a real challenge trasfering it to your device and using it. I have it figured out now, but Garmin could do a much better job with a users manual and better documentation. Good maps, but hard to use.

Garmin City Navigator for Detailed Maps of Italy and Greece (microSD/SD Card) Review

Maps, GPS, directions from the guy on the street, you're going to eventually get lost driving in a foreign country where you don't speak the language. That being said I can not adequately express the joy and lack of tension I felt driving in Tuscany while we had our Garmin City Navigator of Italy and Greece. The criticisms mentioned in Irina's review just prior to this one are all true, but in the end, so what. On those occasions where the data did not have the new off ramp or entrance to the I22 or the creation of the new roundabout in Siena you simply press detour and in about 5 seconds the new route is calculated. For me the beauty of this product was that in the end I knew it would get me there. Maybe it didn't seem to be the best route, but I could certainly not have done better with a map and my wife calling out directions. The only thing I would be aware of is the old - garbage in garbage out - advice. How you get there will be determined to a great extent on how precise your end location address is. If you are going to Florence but don't know the address of the parking garage, there is only so much the Garmin can do for you. (Been there, done that.) A couple of hints. 1. When in doubt, zoom out on the map, click on the location you are headed to and save. Some locations just don't appear in the address list no matter how many times you try to type in the name. I found this was often due to my misunderstanding of how towns, cities, and streets were categorized. That being said once I found the location on the map I was usually given the proper name and was able to find it in the data base; 2. The "attractions" section has a wonderful supply of information, including parking garages in the cities - found that one out too late; 3. If you are lost or get to an unidentified one way street, be quick with the detour button (menu - detour), it will save you a lot of time; 4. If you are taking a long drive, double check. Plot the route on the Garmin, then zoom out and use the touch screen to drag the map from beginning to end. Make sure that you and the GPS are in agreement as to where you are going. Had that problem going to the Coast. We were about 10 minutes away and the GPS took us up a mountain - as my wife said, this doesn't look like the beach. My fault since I had used the incorrect ending address so therefore, finally; 5. Bring a map - what can I say.

My comments are limited to Colorado and I'm comparing the Garmin maps to another 24K topo set by Above the Timber. On a recent 3-day backpack I used the Above the Timber maps 95% of the time, Garmin 5%, readability was the key. The good news, both map sets reside inside my Garmin GPS and switching is a breeze.
In my opinion a 24K Topo is a back country map used for foot, horse or other slow travel. This map set combines the excellent route-able Navteq highways and also route-able trails, that's slick. However due to an overly dark set of color choices, it's very difficult to see the trails to make an intelligent trip and/or route selection. Having the routing engine choose your route based on time or distance misses the human dynamic of most scenic. Not seen a routing engine that knows my scenic values . . . it'll happen someday.
The Garmin maps do not show BLM or state lands, a very big deal in Colorado. Also the trails lack either names and/or numbers, kind of like having a highway map w/o names or numbers, huh? Names and/or numbers give you valuable clues as to where you're going, which you verify with occasional sign posts.
To understand my colors and contrast comment, you'll have to view the attached Nuvi screenshots. They're fuzzy, the Amazon import did that and I'm not sure why.

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k West Topographic Coverage for Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada (DVD) Review

(More customer reviews)I'll cut to the bottom line: As far as I can see, this is the best topographic mapping product available.
It's better than computer maps from DeLorme, National Geographic or other vendors, and much better than Garmin's earlier "MapSource" product. Maps displayed on one's PC or Mac (I've tried it on a Mac) are visually compelling, with very high resolution and near-perfect accuracy. There is also an excellent user interface -- you can browse, zoom, rotate or tilt to your heart's content. Even better, these high-resolution maps (unlike anything from other vendors) can be downloaded directly into your Garmin handheld. Most recent Garmin models are supported.
Today while out hiking I was astonished at the detail and resolution on my handheld -- 40 ft topo lines make a enormous difference when deciding whether the hill in front of you is a mountain or a molehill.
The only downside I have noticed is that there aren't very many hiking trails indicated on the maps. But it's always a good idea to obtain a local trail map if one is available. Drivable roads near where I live are all there, and as far as I can see there are no errors of labeling or placement. This is a big relief, because some other products I have seen are loaded with errors.
P.S. (7 Aug 2010). With some recent software fixes (both to my Garmin 60 Csx firmware, and also updates to the "BaseCamp" and "MapInstall" software, I have been able to download almost the entire mapset (California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington), except for a few panes in eastern Nevada, onto a single 4 Gbyte microSD HD card in my Garmin 60 Csx handheld. It works wonderfully. How did I ever live without it?

Garmin MapSource TOPO US 24k West Topographic Coverage for California and Nevada (microSD/SD Card) Review

(More customer reviews)I received these topo-maps about two weeks ago and used them for road navigation (car) and trail navigation (MTB) so far on an etrex Vista HCx. My overall impression is mixed I have to admit.
From the start:
Installation is nice and easy, just pop in the micro-SD, power up the Garmin and the gadget will do the rest. In less than 5 minutes the map-set is completely configured and ready to go. I like this much better than the hassle with the DVD and transfer via USB cable which takes aeons. I made a backup of the SD card, yet I don't know if this will work the reverse way if I have to restore the SD. I recently read that this might cause problems but I don't have any experience with this.
Using it on the road it works well, fast calculation, precise directions. But this is definitely not what I bought it for.
So I took it to Lake Chabot (Anthony Chabot Regional Park) and... I was lost. Not a single one of the trails going round the lake was indicated. I rode into the golf course trying to get through somewhere, had to go back. Next through a nearby village, again, no trail indicated. Asked a resident and she told me where to get back on the trail. Fine. At least I was able to use the compass with the map to get back to my starting point. All in all: disappointing.
One week later up to Mission Peak. This time I was smarter and took a map of the Regional Preserve with me. And again, none of the trails indicated on the Garmin. Without the map I would have probably again been lost. Garmin and the map together worked well, but honestly saying the map alone would have been sufficient.
There are however some trails correctly indicated in parks and preserves which I can tell because I rode them earlier. But you'll better make sure that trails are displayed on the Garmin BEFORE you go there. Otherwise take a paper map with you. Well, I know you should always do this when hiking in the mountains where no official trails exist. But for park trails??
A downside of the SD card: you cannot use it on your PC for route planning, track or waypoint readout or whatever unless you have another map set on CD with the MapSource-SW. Think you can download MapSource from the Garmin homepage and activate it with the code of the SD-based maps? No way! Aaaaargh!!!
Summary: If you need a supplement of topo-maps when you already own MapSource it is probably alright because you can easily check on your PC and plan your trip before hitting the trail. Or you can check if there is any trail indicated at all. For the actual price it is still alright, but always make sure you have a paper-made backup with you if you are not 100 % sure that you can rely on the etrex.

Or you're looking for a junction and ...nothing. Though one thing I've learned in my life of ALL maps...they are just guides never to be taken as the Bible. This program does what it says. Garmin TOPO Topographical Maps (Canada) Review

(More customer reviews)The topo maps are fine on this product, but for hiking I wouldn't bother - there are no trails. I searched around Jasper National Park and Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, and couldn't find *any* trails in this map set at any level of zoom or detail. If you're used to the US Topo maps by Garmin, you'll be disappointed. The disks I received from Amazon said "Version 2.0", which were ordered in August, 2007.

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased a Garmin Quest2 which comes with all the software installed and no supplemental CD with MapSource, etc. I needed to install maps I obtained from New Zealand. Garmin says it won't install maps, but it installed them very nicely. Further it has proven an excellent trip planning tool allowing me to set up routes and waypoints at home and upload them to the Quest2 before we leave for New Zealand. Much easier than trying to set them up on the Quest2 directly.
