Drive Genius 2 Review

(More customer reviews)I received this product yesterday and the version shipped was 2.0.3. I used it on my 1-year old MacBook Pro running Mac OS 10.5.4. I had no problems running any of the utilities or booting from the disc. It defragged my drive beautifully (I was honestly surprised at how fragged it was), repaired my permissions, and checked for bad sectors on my hard drive (none - woo hoo!).
For those of you who purchased Drive Genius 2 that is not version 2.0.3, go to Prosoft's website and you can download the latest update for free, as well as get a free bootable disk, if needed. I think a lot of the people who left bad reviews never came back and updated them because the software does automatically check for updates and 2.0.3 was released in June 2008.

(More customer reviews)Just wanted to update the user community that the current shipping version of Drive Genius 3 will not boot from DVD with the newest Macs released after July 2009 including the i5 and i7 laptops. See the excerpt below straight from Prosoft's website. Drive Genius 3 is an excellent product. I have been using DG since version 2. However, much of the functionality is only available when booting from the DVD. Without this ability, the software is very limited. You can monitor your drives, but you can not repair them.
"...At this time, the current boot technology provided by Apple is based off the 10.5.8 operating system and is capable of booting machines released up to June of 2009. Apple has not released a new DDK to help support machines newer than June of 2009, which include i5 and i7 machines. This means the newest machines will be unable to boot from the current Drive Genius 3 DVD until Apple releases the new Disk Development Kit."

Micromat Techtool 6 Review

(More customer reviews)After 6 versions, you'd think they would have made their product easy to use. But it's not.
I ran a check on File Structure. It said there were numerous errors and listed all of them but there was no button and no menu option to choose for repairing those errors. Why wouldn't they have a big red Repair button on the screen?
That was in the Test section. I went to the Tools section hoping there would be something there to fix the file structure, but the only tool there that had "file" in its name was "file optimization" which is not what I need. So now I know I've got a problem but the software gives no clue on how to fit it.
Then I tried to create an "eDrive" but now after twice clicking on the "Create eDrive" button, it says an error occurred and to try again. It doesn't say what kind of error or what needs to be done, just "try again." I imagine that no matter how many more times I try, I'll keep getting the same message.
If you want an easy, intuitive way to maintain your computer, this software is not it.
