Like my title states, this game has great potential but it falls short in many ways, let me let you know why.
1. The lack of diversity of weapons. You only have a choice between a bow and a sword/axe, and what makes it worse is that there really are no differences between the types of bows or swords you can get. For example, the bows that are found either have low damage and fast reload rate, or high damage and slow reload rate. And of course somewhere in between. And once you replace your old bow, you can't get it back after you leave the area (there's no inventory). Imagine if you get the choice between a whole range of weapons like lances, broadswords, medieval guns..etc it would make the game so much more exciting, and with more diverse animation (which I'll go into next)
2. The lack of diverse animation doesn't bother me too much, but I still feel it's lacking in that department. For one, you can only run, no walking allowed, unless you have your right mouse button held down (which is for aiming and using your shield). Which is kind of ridiculous because at certain times the characters walk on the field (say when you just finished a cutscene, and the characters are talking and you move your character forward, they are walking until they finish their line. I mean, the animation is there, I don't understand why they didn't implement it in the controls. As for attacking with your sword, there's only about 3 animations, which isn't a big deal if they implemented more weapons, which of course would have different attack animations. It just get kind of old watching the same attack animation all the time...even the Wargar have the same sword attack animation as your character. It just feels like you don't get much freedom in the game.
3. There's inconsistencies/glitches everywhere in the game. Like some objects in the environment you can break, while there's another one that looks exactly the same and it cannot be broken. Having a destructible environment would have made it better, who doesn't like running around breaking tables, carts, skulls and stuff? I sure do. You also can't kill the prisoner's in the game. They're invincible, but yet they're killed by those warguards. I think it would add more fun if you can have more freedom in the game. The same goes with lighting your arrow on fire, some flames you can light your arrow, some you can't even if you're standing right infront of it. Sort of the same with the invisible walls in the environment. There's places that seem like you can explore, but there's just an invisible wall there. So basically, you can't fall off a cliff and kill yourself. And if you see an enemy in another area and you wanna shot him with your bow, you can't because there's an invisible wall blocking your arrow from going to the other side. So you have to run around, get to the area where he's at then kill him. You wanna shot through prison bars to save a prisoner? Sure, it works on one prison door, and it doesn't work on the one right next to it.
Another thing that kind of bothered me was when you take cover standing up. When you peep out of your cover to aim and shot, and want to take cover again, for some reason the character (E'lara in the case) will slide away and back into cover. Sometimes it's so bad that it teleports her maybe like 20 feet (ingame wise) away from where I took cover.
4. The facial animations are very mediocre. It seems like they don't have a high res model for cutscenes, so they just used the ingame models for cutscenes, which obviously would not have that great facial model animation. But the textures of the character's skin and clothing are pretty good.
5. Auto aim?! It's fine and such, if it can be turned off, but there's no such option in the option menu. I hate when the game aims for me, kind of feels like riding a bike with training wheels when you know how to ride a bike.
6. Some of the environment are so dark that I wish the characters carried some kind of torch. It sucks because I would light an arrow and run into the darkness, just to have creatures come out and after 3 shots with the bow, I have no light and have to wander aimlessly out. Goes back to the fact that there's no inventory I guess..
7. Inventory please? As for the story, I don't really care for it.
Overall, it feels rather unpolished. The game would have been much better if these glitches are worked out.
If they make a sequel...and address these problems, I think it would be a really awesome game. But this one just falls short. Not worth the $60 in my opinion, maybe around 30 and at most 40 bucks.
