(More customer reviews)I was excited to get this product, because we have used Paint Shop Pro in the past, and when I got my new pc, we could not find the old copy of the software, so I thought this was going to be great to try out the newest Paint Shop Pro. My first project involved an ad I was making using the font named 'Germany'. The 'Germany' font on the Corel product was much uglier and harder to read than the same font in the free Paint.Net program I was using. So, back to the free program for that project. Meanwhile, I found it irritating that the Corel software had somewhat taken over my pc, with the Corel photo downloader running continually in the background and trying to force me to use it everytime I wanted to move some pictures around. I also do not like the black background of the software - it seems hard to see and read in my opinion. There are likely some settings to change that, but I never got that far.
Later, I had a difficult video editing problem and thought perhaps this is where the Corel product would shine. The video software does not allow you to simply import and export file formats. When you finally figure out how to open an avi file in the program, and get it edited, then what? It appears, you must next go to a 'batch converting' option. Then the conversion options are very limited as to format, size of picture, and, particularly annoying to me, who often works with music videos, the software would force you to re-encode your audio. Yuck! I got some free tools off the web and got my project done beautifully.
So I certainly don't recommend software costing in the $100.00 range and up, that doesn't measure up to what you can get for free. This software is downright annoying.
Update: Last night I needed to get some screen captures and decided to try the software since I used to always use my old Paintshop Pro program for screen captures. It didn't work at all. The menu was exactly the same, but when I clicked on the screen capture option, absolutely nothing happened. Maybe you need a special plug-in - I don't know, but that is very lame. I learned how to use the Snippet tool in Windows 7 and did the job quickly, but I was again let down by the Corel software.
Further update: A couple nights ago, I was working with some photos and the Corel photo viewer is the default photo viewer now on my pc as that was forced on me when I installed the software and I haven't taken the trouble to go back to Windows photo viewer. You cannot permanently rotate photos in the Corel viewer like you can in Windows. You can rotate them, but it is not a permanent action like it is in the Windows viewer. So I went ahead and opened a photo in the Corel editor, since it seemed pretty convenient to make some quick edits. The photo was large and the Corel editor would not let me cut it down, saying it would take too much memory - 'close some programs and then try'. Arghhh! I have 2 gigs of memory and only had small apps such as my mail running. Again, Paint.net to the rescue. I closed Corel, opened Paint.net, and made the necessary adjustments easily without shutting down any other apps.
Further update: just to give this software its due: a couple days ago I needed to do some fancy editing, pasting pieces of photos into others and trying to make it appear that is the way the photo was originally taken. The clone brush and the smudge tool to the rescue - I could not perform this kind of fancy editing with the free Paint.Net, so it is decided that the Corel product will stay on my pc, however, when ever the editing is light, I have to use Paint.net, because to use Corel, I have shut everything else down and just hope for the best, as the Corel program often freezes and shuts down in the middle of editing and I lose all my work. Grrrr!
