Ulead VideoStudio 11 Review

Editing features are pretty cool, improved from last versions.
But capture is so buggy when it comes to capturing video originally shot in analog mode (like all your VHS tapes) just won't work with this software. You have to capture with another program, like CapWiz or Win DV, then edit with Video Studio.
I've been using VS since version 5 and usually had no capture problems before version 11. both in XP and Vista.
So unless you want to be a beta tester for Ulead (now owned by Corel) and PAY them for the privilege, forget this version for a while. Try Roxio EasyMedia Creator or Nero.

Punch Home Design Architectural Series 4000 Review

I bought this software to design a garage blueprint to be submitted to the local building inspection department hoping to get a permit to build this garage. It takes about 20 hours with many restarts to completly master the basics of this program enough be ready to print out an asthetically acceptable rendering, proportionatly drawn to the specifications just to find out that when the drawing is printed that the foundation can not be printed at all and that 25% of the drawing which is on the computer screen is to lightly printed to be seen with no options to make the program print bolder lines. Needless to say the county rejected my blueprints and sent me back to the drawing board. Now heres the kicker...I contact Punch to return the software within about 10 days of purchase and they send me an e-mail stating that it can not be returned. This is not the first punch program or designing program I have ever used, nor is it the worst I have ever used...but I think that the ad hype for this program is deceptive and that their tactic maybe illegal in the USA. This remains to be seen. My only hope is that you will read this review and make a better choice than I did.

Punch 5 In 1 Home Design Review

This is software that you have to spend some time with to understand. But if you spend the time, the software delivers and leaves the competitors behind. Most of the negative reviews I have read point out shortcomings that really don't exist if you understand how the software works.
I initially thought that the program lacked certain features or had some of the same shortcomings mentioned in other reviews. A few minutes on the phone with their Tech Support people to supplement the manual and the help feature and I was pointed in the right direction. In most cases the software could do what I was trying to accomplish, the problem was that I was not far enough up the experience curve. One thing I did do was upgrade to the Professional Home Design for another $20 dollars. It is worth it. My overall experience with home design software is that you have to be patient as it is not simple or intuitive as gaming software.
Two shortcomings - No strong undo feature so you need to save before you try something new. Also, there is a limit to 3 floors, so if you have a finished basement, a finished attic and two floors, you can only show 3 of the 4 floors; although you can complete the remaining floor in another file.

Susteen Datapilot Cell Phone Data Transfer Suite Universal Review

Susteen Datapilot Cell Phone Data Transfer Suite Universal
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I obtained this software in a kit that included the software on CD along with a cable for my phone (LG 1300, a model with no camera, but pretty much everything else).
The packaging for the kit I purchased is quite nice, however, the fancy chart incorporated into the packaging which gives phone compatibility is obviously dated, since my phone is not present on the list but is known to the software.
More interestingly, the CD in my package was blank (not defective, but actually blank!). That was a bit startling. Sending emails to the company (every email address on their web-site) produced absolutely no response. I didn't bother to call since the idea of spending hours trying to reach a customer or tech service by phone that wouldn't respond to email seemed pointless. Anyway, about 6 weeks later a replacement CD showed up in the mail, with no explanatory note.
Interestingly, the replacement CD I received has a label on it that says "if the serial # you have does not start with 'BJ' please replace the first 2 characters of your current serial # with 'BJ'". Evidently, they have had to send out a bunch of these.
I remain totally mystified as to why Susteen didn't acknowledge any one of my emails and simply send me a download site (you can buy the software on-line by download, I believe). I had a valid serial number after all.
As to the software. My install was for XP (SP2). The install was not clean (rejected the serial number, then took it on a second try). The install didn't call for reboot, but I couldn't get connection to my phone until I rebooted, a minor quibble. The software's autodetect feature did not work for my phone, even though it wasn't among the phones the software listed as being problemmatic. I was able to successfully connect by entering my phone id info manually, although connecting this way failed on my first try (which is why I rebooted).
The connection appears to be a USB-serial replacement patch for an earlier serial version of the software. Anyway, the install is actually a series of installs, one of which puts in a driver similar to those for USB-serial adapters, which may explain the somewhat flaky connection issues I experienced.
Once I achieved connection, I was able to upload/download my address info, including the stuff I already had on my phone, an important plus, since managing this was a primary motivation for wanting the software in the first place. Incidentally, this process also took two tries, even after I had successfully made connection. I can't address the issue of syncing with Outlook, since Outlook has caused me enough grief over the years that I long since gave up on trying to sync anything with it. I am interested in seeing if I can sync this software with my PDA, but suspect I will find it will need to be a manual process. Frankly, given the rather low price for the software, I'm just happy that it actually can deal with basic capabilities of my cell phone.
The interface for handling ring-tones (assuming your phone supports this) is impressive given the evident playback limitations of a cell phone. I imported a large midi file and easily dumped it to my phone. Don't expect to do anything complicated with the software (there are much better products, albeit expensive ones, that do this; e.g., Sibelius), but the software does nicely display a staff line for each track, you can change the instrumentation on each track, modify notes, set tempo, and it downloads a reasonable rendition according to what the phone can play back (I dumped a lengthy Bach fugue onto the phone ... I suppose a 3-minute ring tone is a bit excessive, but it gives you the idea).
If your phone has wallpaper background (as my phone does), the software provides an image editor. Just as with the music, you would probably be better off doing image work with another product. Given the very limited display capability of the phone, you can't show much of an image anyway, but I did test it by putting a neat little jpg file I had on hand as my new wallpaper. It certainly distinguishes my phone and is an improvement over the stuff put on the phone by my supplier (Cingular).
The software provides other facilities (calendar, text message management) that I have not tested because these are for features I don't use my phone for (and probably never will).
I can certainly recommend this software. You do need to have a USB cable compatible with your phone. If you are willing to poke around on the web, there are suppliers who provide them for most phones for as little as $10, otherwise do what I did and buy the kit. Perhaps it's because I've used a huge variety of software over the years, but in contrast to other reviewers I found the interface to be just fine. There is a nice pdf documentation file included with the software that provides a pretty complete hand-holding for those not inclined to decipher an interface by trial and error. So why only 3 stars? Well, if you encounter difficulty, it appears to me unlikely that you will get much help from this company. I also thought that the install was unusually clunky. On the other hand, once in, the software appears to be solid and delivers pretty much what I expected it to.

--------------------------------------------------
I will be reviewing ProVenture Label Maker v4.0, which was released in 2006 (according to the copyright date on the blue and white box).
Product Information
* Developed by: ProVenture
* Published by: Avanquest
* UPC: 018059051249
* Serial/SKU/Model: 5124
System Requirements:
* Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
* Pentium III or higher
* 95 MB disk space
* 128 MB RAM
* CD-ROM Drive
* Inkjet or laser printer
I bought this product because I wanted to have a 32-bit replacement for the label making component of the old 16-bit Print Shop Deluxe that I've been using (it came out in 1994 and was designed for Windows 3.1!!!). I saw this on the shelf at MicroCenter, and although I don't buy boxed software anymore (at least not without downloading a trial first), I couldn't resist the ten dollar price tag, so I bought it.
This review will actually be a quick list of notes I wrote up as I was testing out the program. Some are criticisms, and others are notes on using the program. These are somewhat organized in the order in which you'd come across these issues when installing and running the program, though the information on the registration nag is at the end so it is easier to read.
-- Run setup.exe to directly install the program without having to go through the trial screen interface (trial copies of other programs are available on the CD). You still will be nagged to install a payment service (to accept credit card payments for your business) and the NewsFlash program (used to send you company updates). You can easily say NO to both.
It would be nice to not have ANY kind of nags like this.
-- The program doesn't copy the clipart folder from the CD to the hard drive, even though it makes an empty Clipart directory in the program directory.
-- Some program settings are found in mylabels32.ini in the C:\Windows (or C:\WinNT) directory. This file is not deleted if you uninstall the program.
-- The program saves _FOUR FILES_ for every saved label (the files have the extensions .lbl, .bcf, .fsif, .msif). Even if you just have a label with one piece of data on it, and nothing in the databases, it still saves it as four files. For a simple label with just a name and address on it (no database entries), the combined size of the four files is 35 Kb. Other label making programs save only one file, with a size between 1 and 6 Kb.
This is the primarily deal-breaker for me. This is the reason why I'm no longer keeping the program. If I make 10 labels, I will have 40 FILES(!) to deal with. That's just not right.
Unfortunately, MicroCenter won't take the item back because they don't take back opened software (as is the usual policy for most stores). I can't take advantage of the publisher's 30-Day Money Back Guarantee because I didn't get a chance to install the software until a bit more than 30 days after I bought it. Granted, ten dollars isn't a big loss, but it's still a loss.
-- To print an entire sheet of labels containing the same data on each label (just a single name and address - hard-coded to the design, not from a database), you must set the number of copies on the Print dialog box to the number of labels on the sheet (30 for the Avery 5160/8160/8660/6460 layout). This is not very intuitive, as the Copies field normally selects the number of PAGES to be printed (as it is standard in all Print dialogs for ALL Windows programs).
This is the other deal-breaker, especially since the number of "copies" resets to 1 every time you run the program (as that is what Windows normally does in the Print dialog window of ANY program). So every time I open and print one of my labels (as I tend to create labels with singular data, not from databases), I have to remember to change the number of "copies" to 30. The program won't even save that information to any of the four files that it creates for each label.
-- If there are multiple records in your database, and you just want to print one, select the record you want to print by entering the same record number in both From and To fields in the Print Range.
-- How to remove the registration nag without registering (which is free but shouldn't be necessary): Amazon wouldn't let me include the text in my review that you'd need to copy and paste into Notepad, so you'll have to go to this product's forum (near the bottom of the product's main page) and read the instructions that I posted there. Look for the topic entitled "ProVenture Label Maker Registration Nag" and you'll get all the information you need. I wish I could have included that information in my review, and I really tried, but Amazon blocked all of my efforts. Shame on you Amazon!

This license is only for Office installations that are already on Window's Ready PCs! To be honest, I really don't know what a "Window's Ready PC" is. But I do know that it is not a PC on which you downloaded and installed an Office Small Business Trial from Microsoft. The license is worthless in this case. If I could give zero stars, I would. I have used Quickbooks since it was created, and it seems each time there is an upgrade, there are more bugs and problems. We upgraded to the Premier 2007 5-user edition recently, and ever since we are unable to use the product in Multi-user mode. At least six calls to 1-800-India have yielded no results; one of these calls was over four hours long. The only solution they can come up with is for us to switch to Enterprise Solutions, which we do not need because we're not that big a company (we are a church for heaven's sake!). Not to mention the fact that Enterprise Solutions is $300 more expensive. And of course the product cannot be "undone" once you've upgraded, so you're stuck. I'm shopping for Peachtree very soon...

Punch Viacad 2D/3D Review

Punch Viacad 2D/3D

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this item, then found it was also available on this same site @ $99.99. I had an instant feeling I had purchaced the wrong item, as I was looking for the VISTA compatible version, and the "platforn" listed states "NO OPERATING SYSTEM" What this means, no one at amazon customer support could tell me. They seem to be in INDIA or in ASIA somewheres.
I called customer service and they could not tell me the differences other than the $100 version is from TARGET, and the $70 version is from AMAZON.
Long story short, if you want the PC version of this software, GET THE AMAZON VERSION FOR $70.
Here's what I found out....the ITEM NUMBERS are different (88100 vs 88500) The 88500 being the "newer" more expensive. The bottom line is that the only difference is the SIZE OF THE BOX. I dug around the web for hours and finally was able to find a site with UPC, ISBN and all info on this title. The "old" $70 version is in the larger box with a flap to open up with ideas and pictures that are used to sell the product. The newer on (88500) is the smaller size box that has become popular recently.
Also, right on my box it states WORKS WITH WINDOWS VISTA (the website does not tell you this, unless you look at the picture of the box, and then it conflicts with the information on the site, hense my confusion.)
The detailed specs clearly state VISTA as a supported operating system.
The program install takes a bit of time to install due to tha amount of files to transfer, and on a VISTA system, SEVERAL MINUTES (up to 15?) due to the fact VISTA will read the entire disk, file by file before even starting the install. Be patient, and notice your HD or CD/DVD drive light is still "thinking"
In XP, the program runs flawless. In vista I had to adjust some setting and verify my "OPEN GL" was up to date. I am still having a issue with 3d rendering (it wont all the time, yet at other time sit does perfectly.)but I have only had it for a day, so I'm still on the learning curve. I'm not 100% convinced it's a bug in the software, more a compatibilty issue. It has NO issue on my XP system.
Speaking of learning curve, there IS. On a scale of 1-10 it's a about a 6 for me. If you are familiar with PUNCH! products, this interface should be familiar. It is not as intuitive as other PUNCH! software, but I feel it's because of what this software has to offer....TONS OF FEATURES. They all need a button or two!!
The software is AMAZING for the price. Shorter learing curve, decent features in both 2D and 3D. I was making detailed 3D gears in a day.
You will need to REGISTER this software to use it beyond the default "trial" of 7 days. For those of us who follow EULA, and are honest this is no problem.You can also download tha latest patch (upgrades to "build 711") for free right away. It's approx. a 7.3MB update.
As with other punch software they have a decent user forum at http://forum.punchcad.com/. As this is a relatively new product, the forum is still developing, and if other PUNCH! sites are any indication, this will be a great site for resources!
OTHER NOTES:
If you sign up for a AMAZON VISA, you can get $30 off your first purchace. This item also has FREE shipping. I opted for NEXT DAY shipping and it set me back $88, but I will get a $30 credit on my new VISA. Can beat that.
I DO NOT work for PUNCH! or any of it's companies, I'm just a user trying to save a buck on something I enjoy doing with my PC.
I rate this item at 4 stars, because of the learning curve, and the apearant left out details in tutorials. Still, this is by far the easiest CAD program to date that I have used. I have used PRO-E, AUDOCAD, TURBO-CAD to name a few. My proficiancy level is "hobbiest, a jack of all trades, master of none" I am a moderate user, not a "power user, to put this review into perspective.

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit for System Builders Review

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit for System Builders
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This version of Windows Vista is the OEM version, which means that it does not come with a box or a manual, just a "Quick Install" guide. This is the FULL version of Vista but another thing that it is lacking is support from Microsoft. Because this version is intended for (as the title suggests) system builders, whoever that may be, they are the people who are supposed to provide the End User Support not Microsoft. It does, however, still include Windows Update so there do not think that you will not be getting updates from Microsoft, because you do. But if you are building a computer for your grandmother, and she BSOD's Vista, its up to you to fix it; Not Microsoft. Another difference between this version and the full 400 $ version is that this version only comes with the 32 Bit version of Windows Vista, but the full version comes with both the 32 and 64 Bit versions. So if you are pretty technology Savvy and you do not need Microsoft's support and you know what type of processor (64 or 32 bit) then the OEM version is the version for you.

Magix Music Studio 10 Deluxe Review

Magix Music Studio 10 Deluxe

I've been spoiled by FL Studio 5.0 and my demo copy of Project 5. A friend of mine was going to let go of his copy of Sonar 4 because he just bought Sonar 5. But he hasn't gotten around to it yet, and in my impatience I ventured into the software aisle of Comp USA looking for an inexpensive tool that I could use to automate the VST control interface of FL Studio while I lay down some audio tracks. I came across Magix Music Studio 10 Deluxe. By the looks of the screenshots and the promises on the box, as well as what few reviews I've found on the product, I decided to give it a shot.
I loaded it up and quickly discovered, however, that this kludge of a product had been literally sawed in two. The audio multi-track recording environment is one environment, while the MIDI and VSTi/DXi multi-track recording environment is a COMPLETELY SEPERATE PROGRAM!! Can you believe it? Yes, you can record audio, by loading WAV files but possibly in realtime also, within the MIDI recording environment. But all those nifty audio effects must be loaded up into the seperate program.
To make things worse, there does not appear to be a way to specify the default MIDI output device, so the MIDI Out on my MIDI controller is being used as the default device for MIDI playback because it's the first thing it finds. And if THAT wasn't bad enough, trying to use ASIO doesn't work for me because the ASIO drivers keep giving me messageboxes saying "cannot use clock rate of 44khz" or whatever. (I guess this is because my sound card--an Audigy--is set up for 48kHz.)
And if you're like me, you'll throw up over your computer monitor when you see the remnants of an 80's/90's-looking user interface filling up half of the product's windows. It still uses pixellated two-color toolbar icons that remind me of the days of System 6.x on the Macintosh.
I have not done enough tinkering to give it a full evaluation, right now I'm still recovering from the shock factor of how utterly useless this thing is. I should have gone with Sonar 4 Home Studio on the rack there, or Cakewalk Music Creator, or drove over to Guitar Center to pick up Cubase SE, or something, anything other than this.
Heck, the Voyetra offering looked to be better than this.

The 3d view is very limited, you can walk through but you can't tilt your viewing angle vertically. The objects are very basic and there isn't much of a selection. The "12 powerfull programs in 1" is rediculous. The plumbing "program" is just a few bathroom objects that you can place in your house. The electrical and HVAC are just like the plumbing. Autoframing is useless. If you decide to change something you can't drag a box around everything and update them all at once. Example: i wanted to change my wall hieght, i had to right click on every wall, select "wall properties" from the menu, and then highlight a box and change it. And i had to do that for every wall seperately. The lanscaping feature where it changines the plants to show how they will look in 5 years just scales up some flat images of the plants.

System Mechanic 4 Professional Review

As the head of the IT support desk for a large contractor, to the government, I have to find software that will reduce downtime, fix errors and keep pc user's machine up and running.

I bought a full version of this product. [The Pro version].
To evaluate it's performance and abilities.

In my opinion;

I give it a [3-Star] "middle-of-the-road" score, as far as a "packaged" s/w utility goes.
This was neither a 5-Star, "miracle" s/w package, nor was it a 1-Star "total flop".

I could go on and give a dissertation, but let me just touch on a few select topics.

1. Anti-Spyware - I have 4 full version packages in my personal arsenal [home pc, not at work]. And STILL, if I run all 4 anti-spyware packages, each one will find something that the others don't.

My picks are:
a. Spysweeper [new V3.0 has a few new, cool upgrades over it's prior version, 2.x version]
b. Pestpatrol [also Spyware X-terminator, apparently licensed to STOMP INC but appears to use the Pestpatrol engine]
c. Mcafee Anti-spyware
d. X cleaner - I like this as an overall bundle-of-utilities better that for it's abilities as an in-depth anti-spyware, though it has been getting better.

2. Anti-virus and firewall - I have used either Norton AV alone, or as part of a Norton "bundle". This would be my first choice. Mcafee NAV probably 2nd.
I have not been very happy with Panda, as an anti-virus
w/ firewall. I don't know what it does behind the scenes, but it has a tendency in my experience to suck-the-life out of my pc. [Which is a 3 GHz with 1 gig ram.]

Bit-defender's demo worked quite well. It is an AV product only [I believe]. something to look at as a anti-virus product.

3. Utility suites - I have used Norton systemworks since 2000, along with the prior version of Norton utilities
for both PCs and MACs.
I normally use Norton Systemworks. A second choice would be V-COM's Systemsuite 5.0.
The only downside of Systemsuite 5 is that it's "disk fixer" product often just seems to throw up it's hands and tells you to manually invoke the CHKDSK utility to repair disk errors.

My suggestions:

1. look for TRIAL software from places like Norton [Symantec], PC-Cillin Trend Micro, Mcafee, Bit defender, V-COM, Iolo, Panda.

2. Always be a bit suspect of reviews [on any product here on AMAZON] that simply say general, non-commitive
terms like "It bites", "No good", "useless".
I give much more credibility to reviews that cover, WHO, WHAT, HOW, WHY, WHEN.
Why is something good or bad? What does it do that is good or bad? How is it better or worse than other products?
Why would I recommend or not recommend it? Based on what? When [under what circumstances]
Did it perform good or poor?

Just my .02 cents.

Arcsoft Panorama Maker 4 Review

The Arcsoft Panorama Maker 4 is OK. If you have a simple picture series, it will work OK. However, if you start clustering shots with slightly odd angles, it produces a distorted image and not all of the edges align. The software doesn't save the panorama in layers, so you can't hand correct misalignments later. It's a pretty simple program, fun to play, but not a cure-all.
